Meredith Calls "The View" A "Joke"

Meredith VieieraHow about this for a hot topic: Meredith Vieira now says that her old show "The View" is "hard to watch," that she got "blasé" about it after nine years, and even that it "sort of became a joke" after she left.

All of which should provide fodder for an interesting discussion when the current "View"-ers -- Barbara, Joy, Elisabeth, and, of course, Rosie -- get back to the studio next week.

The new "Today" show co-host disses her old colleagues on the ABC show in an interview with Time magazine, saying that she hasn't watched the show at all since she took off, except for the day after Star Jones announced she was "leaving." Even though the show has been garnering stellar ratings, Vieira says she thinks it's "very sad" what's happened to it. "I'm proud of the work we did there, but it's not a good time in the history of the show," says Meredith. "It's hard to watch. It sort of became a joke."

Vieira also adds that she's not overly excited about the hours at her new gig: "I'm not somebody who loves getting up at 4 in the morning, so this might kill me, but we'll see."

Cruise Gets Award for What He Didn't Say

Tom Cruise has been getting plenty of flak – and, last week, fired – for his remarks on psychiatry, on Katie Holmes, and plenty of other topics, but now he's been given an award in Australia for a possibly sexist comment that he didn't even make.

A gathering of 400 of Australia's most powerful women, reports People, bestowed the title of "Worst Derogatory Public Statement" on Cruise for supposedly saying, "I've got Katie tucked away so no one will get to us until my child is born." The only problem is that he didn't say it. Says his rep, "Anyone who knows him knows that he is a complete gentleman and would never ever say such a thing ... He has the utmost respect for women."

Wahlberg Sort of "Invincible" at Weekend Box

Mark Wahlberg's Rocky-on-the-gridiron football saga "Invincible" did good enough business to beat the competition in theaters over the weekend with an estimated $17 million. The triumph represents yet aother strong showing for a jock-flick released by Buena Vista, joining "Miracle" and "The Rookie" as notable successes.

"Talladega Nights" came in second place with $8 million, while indie darling "Little Miss Sunshine" continued to pick up speed, with $7.5 million to land it in third place. Several other new releases included "Beerfest," which chugged its way to fourth place with just $6.5 million, while OutKast's film debut, "Idlewild," performed more strongly than expected with $5.9 million in less than 1,000 locations.

Party Favors: Paris Mad At Ricky Gervais, Keith Richards in Trouble for Smoking, Spider-Man 3 Needs More Action

Paris Hilton is apparently miffed that Ricky Gervais, creator of the original "Office," passed her over for a cameo role on HBO's "Extras." The lodging heiress apparently asked Gervais for a plum cameo on the show, but he refused, causing her no end of grief. "I guess he's obviously scarred of starring alongside an A-lister," said Hilton to the San Francisco Chronicle ... Keith Richards may have to pay a whopping $90 fine for smoking on stage in Glasgow, says the BBC, where smoking is banned in all public places. The Rolling Stones guitarist and his bandmates allegedly puffed away throughout the performance last Friday ... "Spider-Man 3" is going back for reshoots, says co-star James Franco, after test audiences decided they needed more action. The actor tells MTV, "The next thing I'm shooting? Re-shoots on "Spider-Man" ... Probably next month. Director Sam Raimi wants more action." The third installment of the superhero series is scheduled to be in theaters next summer.

31. #24 you sound like a "baby." She made a lot of money off The View, and if she was a class act she would keep those negative comments to herself. Sounds to me like you and Meredith are of the same ilk ..... now take your toys and go home and sit in the corner.

32. Exactly #26...very eloquently put! Have a great day!

33. Until Star got engaged, MV was the most disliked of all of the View women. Star and her "free wedding" begging took the title. But MV is delusional if she believes the show became a joke AFTER she left. HUH, jokes on her!

34. i agree with #26, it seems as though she wasn't saying to her it is a joke, she seems to be saying all the star stuff etc. became fodder for jokes. i think she seems very down to earth.

35. I was a faithful "VIEW" watcher and would like to say goodbye to Star who I thought was intelligent and listening to her and Meridith was the best! As for the rest they need keepers! I will find something else to do with my time!

36. Meredith had the most class on the View. The View deserves her honesty now. With big mouth, right winger, Rosie coming on board, I'll never watch the View again.

37. The View is going from bad to worse. I thought Star Jones got on my
nerves...I don't think I'll be able to stomach Rosie.
If those awful "musical" trailers where Barbara, Joy, Elizabeth &
Rosie sing & dance is any indication of where the show is headed...
It's a pretty sad path!

38. I never watched "THE VEIW". Who wants to watch a bunch of cackly old hens sitting around throwing daggers at each other and whom ever might be in their path. Just like I would'nt want to watch a show where a bunch of men sat around and made comments about how sexy so and so was and slobbering all over themselves. T V now days is getting really boooooring.

just plain bored.

39. Meredith and Joy were the best. Meredith's comments were honest. Hasselback is a dum dum and Rosie is all rude and mouthy. I will not watch again. The View is on it's way out.

40. I've watched The View once and that was all I needed to see. As for Paris Hilton, get over yourself and get a real job. I am sick of Tom Cruise and wish he'd get stranded on an isolated island. Isn't there more to the news than this?

41. For the paycheck Meredith Whatsherface is going to be earning, she should just shut the hell up about the early morning hours. Hey, Meredith, here's a piece of news for you: Millions of people get up at that hour to go to work every morning and they aren't being paid millions to do it. Be gracious for pete's sake!

As for Paris Hilton. Yawn. Shouldn't her 15 minutes be up already?!

42. I believe in Viera I think she is right more know with ROSIE, however she should be more discret.

43. I won't watch the View because of Barbara Walters. She's so pompous, just who the heck does she think she is? Does she think that HER opinion should be accepted by everyone? She's definitely not a person I would take seriously. She's a joke. I've heard that she's hard to work with and doesn't take criticism well. She's too snooty for me. Glad that Viera left when she did as the View is going to start stumbling in the ratings.

44. I think The View is, was and always will be a joke, considering that they all sit around that table telling each other how much they love each other. Then when one leaves or gets fired from the show, they act like they couldnt stand each other. What a bunch of phony women!!! If The View really wants to be a classy show, get real women on the show, women that live life day by day, as real as it gets. Not Meredith, not Star and definitely not Rosey.

By the way, Rosey had her own talk show and it was horrible. What makes the producers of The View think she will do a better job here???? Seriously people, get a clue!

45. If you all would take the time to read the excerpt from "Time" magazine that Meredith did, you will find out that she did not talk about the show"The View" in general saying that it was a joke!! She was referring to te whole situation about what happened with Star Jones and all of the media attention that her dismissal got. So why would TMZ even print something so inflammatory about Meredith to begin with!! Do your homework people....its Journalism 101!!!
