Meredith Calls "The View" A "Joke"

Meredith VieieraHow about this for a hot topic: Meredith Vieira now says that her old show "The View" is "hard to watch," that she got "blasé" about it after nine years, and even that it "sort of became a joke" after she left.

All of which should provide fodder for an interesting discussion when the current "View"-ers -- Barbara, Joy, Elisabeth, and, of course, Rosie -- get back to the studio next week.

The new "Today" show co-host disses her old colleagues on the ABC show in an interview with Time magazine, saying that she hasn't watched the show at all since she took off, except for the day after Star Jones announced she was "leaving." Even though the show has been garnering stellar ratings, Vieira says she thinks it's "very sad" what's happened to it. "I'm proud of the work we did there, but it's not a good time in the history of the show," says Meredith. "It's hard to watch. It sort of became a joke."

Vieira also adds that she's not overly excited about the hours at her new gig: "I'm not somebody who loves getting up at 4 in the morning, so this might kill me, but we'll see."

Cruise Gets Award for What He Didn't Say

Tom Cruise has been getting plenty of flak – and, last week, fired – for his remarks on psychiatry, on Katie Holmes, and plenty of other topics, but now he's been given an award in Australia for a possibly sexist comment that he didn't even make.

A gathering of 400 of Australia's most powerful women, reports People, bestowed the title of "Worst Derogatory Public Statement" on Cruise for supposedly saying, "I've got Katie tucked away so no one will get to us until my child is born." The only problem is that he didn't say it. Says his rep, "Anyone who knows him knows that he is a complete gentleman and would never ever say such a thing ... He has the utmost respect for women."

Wahlberg Sort of "Invincible" at Weekend Box

Mark Wahlberg's Rocky-on-the-gridiron football saga "Invincible" did good enough business to beat the competition in theaters over the weekend with an estimated $17 million. The triumph represents yet aother strong showing for a jock-flick released by Buena Vista, joining "Miracle" and "The Rookie" as notable successes.

"Talladega Nights" came in second place with $8 million, while indie darling "Little Miss Sunshine" continued to pick up speed, with $7.5 million to land it in third place. Several other new releases included "Beerfest," which chugged its way to fourth place with just $6.5 million, while OutKast's film debut, "Idlewild," performed more strongly than expected with $5.9 million in less than 1,000 locations.

Party Favors: Paris Mad At Ricky Gervais, Keith Richards in Trouble for Smoking, Spider-Man 3 Needs More Action

Paris Hilton is apparently miffed that Ricky Gervais, creator of the original "Office," passed her over for a cameo role on HBO's "Extras." The lodging heiress apparently asked Gervais for a plum cameo on the show, but he refused, causing her no end of grief. "I guess he's obviously scarred of starring alongside an A-lister," said Hilton to the San Francisco Chronicle ... Keith Richards may have to pay a whopping $90 fine for smoking on stage in Glasgow, says the BBC, where smoking is banned in all public places. The Rolling Stones guitarist and his bandmates allegedly puffed away throughout the performance last Friday ... "Spider-Man 3" is going back for reshoots, says co-star James Franco, after test audiences decided they needed more action. The actor tells MTV, "The next thing I'm shooting? Re-shoots on "Spider-Man" ... Probably next month. Director Sam Raimi wants more action." The third installment of the superhero series is scheduled to be in theaters next summer.

46. The joke on the View is that crosseyed Elizabeth Hasselbitch, who defends hate-mongers like Ann Coulter and gets all freak-a-zoid over the Plan B pill which she thought was practically an abortion. She didn't even take the time to find out what it actually is before popping her cork live on camera trying to defend the point that she didn't even understand. HOW she got her job is a mystery to us all?
Poor Rosie...poor Joy. They have to listen to her and sit on their hands to keep from strangling her. No wonder Meredith escaped.

47. Tom Cruise?? HAHAHA His smile, his laugh, his facial expressions etc.....all the same on-screen and off. I can't stand his smile or his fake laugh. Top Gun was ok but that character morphed into his Mission Impossible character and into every other film he's been in. I won't pay the money to see this dude. Couch jumping? At his age? C'mon, grow up. Saying he "knows psychiatry"? Sure, I'll bet. Badmouthing Brooke Shields? Can't wait until Katie has to see a shrink because of her husband. His religion is his business but personally, I don't think it's a religion. It's a gimmick some guy named Ron (can't remember his last name) thought up. Boycott Cruise's movies!!!

50. Editor%u2019s Note: Ms. Vieira%u2019s remarks about %u201CThe View%u201D were intended to refer to the media attention and circus-like atmosphere surrounding the show in recent months; not the show itself. She assures TIME that in no way were her comments meant to be insensitive or derogatory about a program she takes great pride in having built and been associated with for the last nine years.

51. Life must be awful boring for me to sit here and make a comment about these women. BUT, it sure seems like they could have gotten SOMEONE more interesting than Meredith V. to take Katie's place on the Today Show. Wow, you would think they had on blinders or something. Ann, keep doing a good job, and when Meredith bombs out, you dear girl ( Ann Curry) can take her place. Remember when Matt Lauer took Gumbel's place.??? I sure do...
And I must say that I have lost all respect for Barbara "Wawa!" I used to think she was intelligent and had really good judgment. BUT she was an idiot to choose Rosie O'Donnell as a Star replacement. Rosie is WAY tooo controversial. And her mouth is WAY too big. Mainstream American women "spit" at the thought of Rosie.. That is one loudmouth gay bitch !!! Who the hell wants to hear her mouth every day??? Not me... not anyone I know!!! Also Elizabeth goodie goodie is too far the other way.. too idealistic, too miss goodie two-shoes... just plain not mature enough to sit with the others... They will make pimento cheeeeese out of her. I personally don't like Joy Bahar. She doesn't seem educated... she just makes comic remarks to get attention on her and off the others. How does she feel about being a referee between Elizabeth and Rosie?? Where does it say a man can not be on the show sitting at the table. Get someone who is willing to have their butt pinched every so often...maybe Jack Nicholson.. Yeah, Jack Nicholson... He could just move his eyebrows when one of the "ladies" says something crude or controversial..... Well whatever happens I won't be watching the View.... I will watch Bob Barker until he falls over dead on the stage... over at CBS.

52. Tell it like it is Merideth...............The Today show is getting number one lady.

53. I think Meridith is right. I was not happy that she left the View but you do have to move up in the world of broadcasting and she is good at everything she does. I was really upset by what they did to Star. With all the rumors floating around she had every right to tell what was going on with her. I think they treated her badly and toput Rosie on iis the last straw. I have not watched the View since Star was booted. I wish Meridith and Star all the best in everything they do.

54. I always loved Meredith and I still do.
I was waiting to see if she would say anything about what happened on the View. I think that Both Barbara and Star were wrong...and they are both snobby B-tches that think their you know what does not stink! I hope Meredith is not in touch with Star...I don't think Star really knows what friendship is anyway..either does Barb.
The View went downhill after Meredith left...she was the heart of that show and the warmth... and I'm glad she was so honest...because she knows the truth about what went on behind the scenes on the View..Good for her for speaking out about it.
Good luck Meredith and God Bless!

55. I don't like Merideth on any show. She is so silly and flirtatious on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. I have seen the View several times. I agree with several of the comments made pertaining to hostess Elizabeth. She needs to have someone replace her in what ever her speciality should be. I sure do not want to watch when Rosie comes on the show. Talk about mouth. I cannot see her obeying Barbara Walters on any occasion. You know the View may turn into more of a Jerry Springer show. Now wouldn't that be a joke! Actually back to Merideth, I was hoping Jon Stewart would get her job on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Oh well we will have to wait and see.

56. I wish they would all take a break and read the CHRISTIAN LIFE NEW TESTAMENT by DR. PORTER BARRINGTON. It is small enough to fit into anyones pocket with ease. I will GUARENTEE you ,we will watch television that is a billion % better. That goes for every one that reads this comit.

57. I used to like Merideth Viera but my opinion of her has gone down the tubes. How can anyone stay 9 years in a position and then trash her source of income and coworkers for all those years?!? Shame on you, Meredith. You seemed warm and genuine. Apparently it was all a fake. Please restore my faith in goodwill in humanity by giving a reason for this apparent betrayal of morals.

58. I have never watched The View and I really don't care the Meredith called it a joke so TMZ.com says but if you read the article which is in the link on the TMZ article. She did not call the show a joke, or as TMZ put it "and even that it "sort of became a joke" after she left". I think she was talking about the whole Star Jones thing. Not the show itself. I really don't think that Meredith is trying to "dis" her coworkers. I do think TMZ however is trying to stir up commotion.

59. This show is duhhhh and duhhhh to me, it always has been,, show casing things like Viearra pulling up her sweater to see her dimples for breasts? Sick hard core female, Diet plans for Star? (I wish she was a happy medium between her former "Punkin head" to "sucked up head" now!!, dead looking eyes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, sorry Star, your star went out fast when you tried to stand up to top brass, you were always their "token black " on that show,,,,,,,they can't take too much strength so--move on,,,,,,, replace Tired of Banks show , she is miss plastic head, and so so full of herself!!! And, Bahbahrah has always been "miss face made of glass" and snooty,,,,,,, now "noisy Roisey"? I never have like her sarcastic attitudes, she looks like a bull dog, acts like one also, so who needs this ---"show?" ---anyway??? Miss me with all that balony! My low income neighbors are much more human and interesting!!! j

60. Wanted to add that I have nothing against Gay people..in fact my daughter is Gay and she is in a very loving and happy relationship and she is a wonderful person! So you GO Rosie....
However, I may only watch The View for the first week that Rosie is on because I can't stand most of the people that are on that show. Barb is a phoney snob...Elizabeth is a narrow minded twit...and Joy, though I think she is funny, is very narrow minded and annoying in her own way....
My favorites were Meredith and how I still miss sweet Lisa Ling!
