"Crocodile Hunter" Irwin Killed By Stingray

Steve IrwinSteve Irwin, the Australian known to millions of fans worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter, died today after being stung by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.

Irwin was filming a segment for a show called "Ocean's Deadliest" when he swam on top of a stingray. The animals have a poisonous barb on the end of their tails, and the stingray's barb went through his ribcage and into his heart, killing him, according to his friend and colleague, John Stainton.

"The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest dads on the planet," Stainton told reporters. "He died doing what he loved best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. He would have said, 'Crocs Rule!'"

Famous for his Discovery Channel show "Crocodile Hunter" -- and his trademark exclamation, "Crikey!" -- Irwin was also known for being a conservationist. He leaves behind his American-born wife, Terri, who was often referred to as the "Crocodile Huntress," and two children, 8-year-old daughter Bindi Sue and his nearly 3-year-old son, Bob.

Prime Minister John Howard, who hand-picked Irwin to attend a gala barbecue to honor President Bush when he visited in 2003, said he was "shocked and distressed at Steve Irwin's sudden, untimely and freakish death."

"It's a huge loss to Australia," Howard said. "He was a wonderful character. He was a passionate environmentalist. He brought joy and entertainment and excitement to millions of people."

"Steve was one of these guys, we thought of him as invincible," wild animal expert Jack Hanna, director emeritus of the Columbus (Ohio) Zoo and Aquarium, told ABC's "Good Morning America" Monday.

"The guy was incredible. His knowledge was incredible," Hanna said. "Some people that are doing this stuff are actors and that type of thing, but Steve was truly a zoologist, so to speak, a person who knew what he was doing. Yes, he did things a lot of people wouldn't do. I think he knew what he was doing."

News of Irwin's death spread quickly, and tributes to Irwin were put up far and wide. At Australia Zoo at Beerwah, south Queensland, floral tributes were dropped at the entrance. "Steve, from all God's creatures, thank you. Rest in peace," was written on one of the cards that accompanied a bouquet.

556. I'm very sad for the family, especially for his children. My sympathies on their loss. It is very tragic. However, I once commented to my husband that this guy was going to have a bad accident one day. I thought he was kind of foolish how he conducted himself around some of these animals. For example, when he put his baby right in that crocodile's face. I thought that was stupid. I'm very sorry that this happened to him but I was kind of expecting it.

My sympathies to the family. God bless him.

557. I think that we all live without thinking what might happen next. That is why accidents are called accidents. But, I think he knew and was very aware that he would probably die doing something like this... Something that he truly loved. He tought us many of things about tons of animals that we wouldn't have known without his wildly entertaining shows. I personally loved his show and loved that he always had his family with him no matter where he was. I pray for his wife and children that they grow up to be animal lovers and full of life like both of their parents. And, I think Steve is up in heaven right now with his mother. And, he will see his family again.
RIP

559. Just thinking about Steve Irwin as I saw episode of Crocodile Hunter the other night and then saw article about Bindi! What a lovely job her parents have done with her. I shall look forward to watching her new upcoming tv show and especially the segments she had already done with her "daddy". He must be very proud of her. God Bless Bindi, her "mum" and little baby bro.

560. I still watch Steve on TV and hope they never stop showing his shows, he was such an inspiration to so many of us and life, he loved his life and family and I am sure he is still watching over them. I watched his family grow, his wife and his children come and rejoiced life with them. I hope and pray the life and spirit can continue with them and the happiness he shared will give them the strength to carry on his life's work. I look forward to Bindi's new show, he would have been very proud of her and I am sure Terri will be the strength that keeps the family going, she is an amazing woman. I heard Barbara Walter's say he had captured the hearts of millions of children. I wonder if she has any idea of how many of us 'children' are far from young? Steve, his family, his love of life and wildlife was an inspiration to millions of all ages.
My heart goes out to you Terri for your loss and your children... I know you will miss the touch and his
laugh. Steve, you were funny... you changed the way we think and made us smile. Thank you &

561. Rest in Peace: Steve will be missed by millions of people who loved him. I can't wait for Bindi's show to start, she is a very special little girl who loved her daddy very much. I think her doing this new TV program without her daddy is very brave and strong, for a 8 year old. Terry you have a very special daughter. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family daily. Take care

566. I used to feel stupid watching his crazy antics on tv...then I found something I loved just as much as he loved entertaining and educating us. I hate that he had to go in such a fashion, and so young to boot...His family have memories to last a lifetime, I know they enjoyed having him everyday. He will be missed by millions, he IS an icon...he made a contribution, he educated and liberated. It's never too late to act foolish because you're passionate, take the kids out and be a clown...they will remember with smiles!
God Bless you, Terry and your beautiful children, cherish them. I admire the closeness of your family...mine will be having a lot more fun together, with a wonderful mentor! Live Life to the Fullest...Be crazy and silly and have a blast.

569. you know what, it seems that if he didn't pull the barb out of his chest and just left it there intact until help arrived, he might still be around. that older guy in florida who got one in the heart, too, lived (he didn't try to pull it out or anything).
