"Crocodile Hunter" Irwin Killed By Stingray

Steve IrwinSteve Irwin, the Australian known to millions of fans worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter, died today after being stung by a stingray while filming off the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.

Irwin was filming a segment for a show called "Ocean's Deadliest" when he swam on top of a stingray. The animals have a poisonous barb on the end of their tails, and the stingray's barb went through his ribcage and into his heart, killing him, according to his friend and colleague, John Stainton.

"The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest dads on the planet," Stainton told reporters. "He died doing what he loved best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. He would have said, 'Crocs Rule!'"

Famous for his Discovery Channel show "Crocodile Hunter" -- and his trademark exclamation, "Crikey!" -- Irwin was also known for being a conservationist. He leaves behind his American-born wife, Terri, who was often referred to as the "Crocodile Huntress," and two children, 8-year-old daughter Bindi Sue and his nearly 3-year-old son, Bob.

Prime Minister John Howard, who hand-picked Irwin to attend a gala barbecue to honor President Bush when he visited in 2003, said he was "shocked and distressed at Steve Irwin's sudden, untimely and freakish death."

"It's a huge loss to Australia," Howard said. "He was a wonderful character. He was a passionate environmentalist. He brought joy and entertainment and excitement to millions of people."

"Steve was one of these guys, we thought of him as invincible," wild animal expert Jack Hanna, director emeritus of the Columbus (Ohio) Zoo and Aquarium, told ABC's "Good Morning America" Monday.

"The guy was incredible. His knowledge was incredible," Hanna said. "Some people that are doing this stuff are actors and that type of thing, but Steve was truly a zoologist, so to speak, a person who knew what he was doing. Yes, he did things a lot of people wouldn't do. I think he knew what he was doing."

News of Irwin's death spread quickly, and tributes to Irwin were put up far and wide. At Australia Zoo at Beerwah, south Queensland, floral tributes were dropped at the entrance. "Steve, from all God's creatures, thank you. Rest in peace," was written on one of the cards that accompanied a bouquet.

46. WOW ! Talk about shocking. Shows you just how precious life is. One day the guy is filming his show , the next second a passive string ray kills him. Not even known to be threatening species. I guess when your time is up, IT'S UP. There is some comfort knowing he died what he LOVED doing . I doubt he felt a thing which is much better than suffering a long painful death , such as cancer. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I'm sure he died with a smile on his face.
DEATH SUCKS. The only thing about growing old that I hate. Seeing people you love and care about dying. God Bless him.

48. I'm sorry for his family, but I gotta say it: this guy was a nut job that acted as if he was immune from harm by "wild" animals. Let's not forget he got into trouble on a trip to Antarctica in 2004, (the same year that he was criticized for holding his infant son in one hand while feeding the crocodiles at his "zoo" with the other) for getting to close to the wild life there and was not allowed to visit again. He may very well have "loved" wildlife, but he had no respect for it. Crikey, mate that's a right fitting way to go ain't it! Hey Shelia, throw another croc' steak on the barbie and have' another Foster's: The Crocodile hunter is DONE!

49. TO #23 AND NUMBER 24:

YOU WERE NOT THERE TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. THIS BOARD IS TO PAY TRIBUTE TO STEVE. NOT TO BERATE HIM.
THERE IS SO MUCH EVIL IN THE WORLD (AS EVIDENCED BY 23, AND 24) AND STEVE BROUGHT A SMILE TO MANY.
BITTER PEOPLE CANNOT UNDERSTAND THE JOY HE BROUGHT TO MANY.
DURING MY CHEMOTHERAPY TREATMENTS, IT WAS STEVE WHO MADE ME LAUGH IN SPITE OF THE PAIN I WAS GOING THROUGH.
SO I WOULD LIKE TO SAY STEVE WAS ONE OF THE BRAVEST MEN I HAVE EVER SEEN. NO ONE COULD DO WHAT HE DID AND THERE WILL NEVER BE AOTHER ONE LIKE HIM AGAIN. HE WILL BE MISSED BY MANY.
GOD BLESS TERRI AND THE CHILDREN.
AND, WHEREVER YOU ARE STEVE, I KNOW YOU ARE HAPPY. YOU ARE SURELY BUSY BECAUSE BEING STILL WAS NEVER YOUR STYLE.
GOD BLESS EVERYONE.
MUCH LOVE TO ALL.....

54. What a shame. It's one of those things that happens that makes your heart ache for him and his family. He went out of this world doing what he absolutely loved and wouldn't have had it any other way. Terri, Bindi, and Bob are in my prayers. I hope they continue on with his lifes work when the time is right for them to do so again. We love you Steve, God speed.

56. Steve lived life to the fullest. He did more in his short life than most do in an entire lifetime. My heart goes out to Terri and their children. The heavens have a great croc hunter now!!

57. This is the saddest news I've heard in a long time. I can't stop crying for Steve and his family. We have lost an incredible human being, someone who gave so much of himself for others and the rehabilitation of wildlife. Thank you Steve for all you've done, YOU are the best!! We will miss you terribly!!

59. 23 he did not DANGLE his kid above the croc's head. he held bob in one arm next him, tucked next to him and dangled a piece of meat of his other hand that the croc took..
look at the video before you speak
and to the other poster, no he NEVER aggitated the animals for the sake of the cameras he told he what he would have to do and why and how they could react. but he had to make sure his crew was safe when they were doing a rescue or a relocation of an animal. Maybe watch the show and you can see for yourself.

60. Not too often is there a show on tv that can be enjoyed by children and adults. I have 2 young children, and I am miserable when having to watch some of the shows they like. Steve was always someone we could watch and enjoy together. My thoughts are with Terri and especially Bindy and Bob. Me and my family will always remember Steve and the way he touched our hearts.
