Celebrities At Risk -- When Animals Attack

Steve Irwin, Timothy Treadwell, Roy HornThe sudden death of Steve "The Crocodile Hunter" Irwin marks the third time in three years a celebrity who performs with animals has been attacked on the job. Irwin was killed Monday, when a stingray's tail barb pierced a hole in his heart as he was shooting an underwater documentary off the coast of Queensland.

In 2003, magician Roy Horn of Siegfried & Roy barely escaped death when he was mauled by a white tiger named Montecore -- a show regular for years-- during a performance in Las Vegas. As with Irwin, Horn was well trained and the big cat was seemingly unprovoked.

Timothy Treadwell, a controversial wildlife activist also known as the Grizzly Man, spent 13 summers living among bears and filming in the Alaskan wilderness. Earlier this year, Treadwell was found dead and partially eaten by one of his beloved grizzlies at his campsite in Katmai National Park. His girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, was also killed.

Even in Hollywood, the stars are at risk. In 2001, Sharon Stone's husband Phil Bronstein was bitten on the foot by an Indonesian Komodo Dragon during a "private tour" of the Los Angeles Zoo. Bronstein nearly lost his toe in the attack.

Most recently, Paris Hilton was forced to visit a hospital emergency room when her pet Kinkajou bit her on the arm. The heiress was not badly hurt, but did receive a tetanus shot.

Most wild animal attacks are extremely rare and can be prevented. In fact, there have been less than 20 stingray deaths in Australia in the last 30 years.

19. Come on we take more of a risk everyday when we get behind the wheel of our cars. Or even more if you ride a motorcycle! Steve died doing what he loved most. i know that does not make it any easier for his family but that is better than ending up in a nursing home or on life support, or suffering from some disease. He lived LIFE! He did more in 44 years than most of us will in 100. When God chooses your time it is a done deal. Be it a car wreak, disease, lightning, heart attack, etc...
Do what Steve did live life and do what you enjoy if possible. God bless Steve and his family. They are blessed to have been part of his life.

21. Steve Irwin and Roy Horn are apples and oranges, so to speak...Irwin worked with animals primarily in their own habitats to educate people, and Horn domesticated wild cats and used them for entertainment purposes. Regardless, they were both people who had spent their lives working with and around dangerous animals, and they were as well-prepared as one could be to comprehend and deal with the dangers.
The grizzly guy was another story entirely. He was untrained and unqualified, a failed actor and junkie who used his reckless behavior in the wild to attain celebrity status. He put himself and others in foolish and dangerous predicaments, both literally (with his girlfriend) and as a result of glorifying such actions that others might copy. Classifying him as a celebrity is outrageous; he's famous mainly for his horrifying but predictable demise at the hands of his own stupidity.

22. You know its funny how you people criticize other people for doing stupid things but then again you get out of a club or any other place drinking or smoking or on something, and then kill someone, but no thats not stupid. The man did what he liked to do, just like electricians work with electricity and could get electrecuted, and strippers work with pervs and could get AIDS!!!

23. Steve Irwin will be missed. He was first and foremost an environmentalist. He was trained to work with animals and did a great job, a job that happened to be dangerous. There are a lot of jobs that are dangerous, such as firefighters and policemen and those people die on the job also. All are important in their own way and should be respected for their contribution. My prayers go out to his family. He was a good man and should be remembered for all of his contributions.

24. I thnik that we all agree that the Croc hunter was a little coo-coo for coco puffs, but also knowledgable of what he was doing. Stingray jabs typically don't kill, but this one did because the barb bypassed Croc's ribcage and pierced his heart, a one in a million shot.

Timothy Treadwell, on the other hand, was completely off his rocker. Treadwell would get in way too close while bears were eating and do other assinine (Boo Hoo, look it up) behaviors that eventually got him and his girlfriend killed.

As for all the other people who are concerned that TMZ is wasting valuable webspace that could be devoted to Paris, she is a no talent hack who is only famous because of her last name and that a tape of her smoking some guys pole was "accidentally" release to the public.

And finally Boo Hoo, the person who not only wrote down you unintelligent tirade and then entered it for you as you probably played with crap in your diaper should be beaten about the head and neck until they realize that you are a waste of genetic material and that your parents should have chemically sterilized before you were born. Have a nice day, you shmuck.
