Jessica and Nick Settle Money Dispute

Jessica Simpson & Nick LacheyTMZ has learned that Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey have divided up the assets in their marriage, and Nick agreed to less than his share in order to avoid an ugly court fight.

The couple amassed a fortune during their three-year marriage, in no small part because of their MTV reality show "Newlyweds" and the avalanche of endorsements and other deals that followed. Jessica refused to sign a prenuptial agreement, so under California law the assets -- estimated at $36 million -- are to be divided equally. So Jessica and Nick should each get $18.

Nick will take significantly more than the $1.5 million, but considerably less than 50%

As TMZ first reported, Jessica (we're told at the behest of her dad, Joe Simpson) offered Nick a relatively measly $1.5 million to walk away from the marriage. Sources say Joe Simpson believed Nick didn't have the stomach to put up a fight over money. Nevertheless, Nick rejected the offer and the former sweethearts decided to make their divorce final and try to hammer out a property settlement.

Sources say in the property settlement -- which has not yet been filed in court -- Nick will take significantly more than the $1.5 million, but considerably less than 50% of what he and Jessica earned during the marriage. Two sources in Nick's camp made it clear to TMZ that Lachey agreed to end the dispute because he does not want to hurt anyone in a contentious court battle.

Ironically last week, a reporter on a red carpet relayed a message from Joe and Jessica Simpson to Nick: "They love you. You're still part of the family." Nick blanched and said "Well, good, that's nice to hear...." The reporter persisted "...Jessica will always love you." Nick's classic reply: "Okay, then!"

32. Nick did the right thing, he's got class. Jessica will eventually see her loss. Daddy needs to but out. He ruined this big time. Poor Jessica, she's made a big mistake. Being young, she may not find out till it's too late. Not many men would have walked away that quietly. See Jess, it's not always about money but I'm not sure about Daddy's intentions. He's accomplished what he set out to do, now what?

36. In response to #16, maybe Nick ignored her for sports because she was always out shopping. She never cooked, cleaned, or God forbid, picked up after herself. and how many thousand of dollars were those sheets she bought that Nick had to show her how to use the washer.

Nick was left at home while Jessica did her thing with her former BFF. Nick was like her gopher, go for this, go for that.

He did more work in and around that house and she use to just throw her dirty clothes over the railings.

Give me a break - the girl has no brains, cannot take care of herself, and is and down and out SLOB. I hope those thousands and thousands of dollars sheets she bought keep her company at night. She sure never had anything that nice growing up with her pervert Daddy only make $16,000.00 a year preaching. Now he is a BIG LADIES MAN. Ever notice he paid no attention to his wife throughout the entire Newleyweds series.

Nick showed her the good life, and when she was done using him, she threw him aside just like her dirty clothes.

37. I think jessmade a terrible mistake by divorceing nick I believe he loved her with all his heart and thats not easy to find. She should try to see if there is any chance at working things out. You will have a hard time replacing that love. The same for you nick forget what everyone else thinks and do what you both want.

42. I hope that Jessica know that she really messed up and has the brains to not turn into another BLONDE from TEXAS, who has made very bad mistakes which has hurt her image and credibilty in this business!!

44. Nick has class. I agree with those who have said this and those who said it was not the best business decision. I can side with Nick for not going dragging him , her, and the Daddy Joe through through a court battle and the media which would have not been good for any of them. This digusting man, Joe Simpson, once again doesn't miss to take a jab at Nick Lachey.
I did not mind Jessica Simpson. I am not a fan. I am not really a fan of Nick's either. I watched their shows on MTV(newlyweds) and Christmas, Troops specials ,but I do not go to their concerts and buy their cds.
I can only hope this less than 18 million ,but more than 1.5 million is a good sum and that it is dislcosed for the public to know. I want to know.
I hope he took around 10 million. I thought he price according to other reports was 6 million.
To those two or three people who said he did not earn it , HE DID earn some of it!!
He was 1/2 of Newlyweds tv show, 1/2 of their Christmas shows, 1/2 of their network show for the troops, and 1/2 or at least a percentage of her Dessert perfume line. Okay, her charting hit, With You, was based and promoted due to him.

The problem here is that Jessica got married too young . They are entertainers and that is another strike. Her father interferring is another. Question is that can h career continue to go forward and more adult. How long can you play up the virgin role. Once you peg yourself in a hole in celebrity world it is hard to get out of it.

45. Nick should get half. If he was the one with the money she would want half, her father is a jerk who only thought about her career and not her well being. She is spineless because she allowed people to manipulate her and in doing so her marriage fell apart and Nick was left in the dark. He has more class then she'll ever have and if she lets daddy make all of her decisions or has to ask his permission to do anything she'll never be truly happy. MTV reality shows that follow newly married couples screw everything up. She would be nowhere if it had not been for that show, it wasn't about her it was about both of them, she was nothing before the show and without Nick she would still be nothing. He deserves half of the assets.
