Irwin's Dad: "We Were Good Mates"

Steve Irwin's dad addresses crowdIn the first public comments by Steve Irwin's family since his death on Monday, his father thanked his son's many fans for their messages of support.

"There's never been anybody else that I know of that had the personality that Steve had, and the strength, and the conviction of what he believed in," his father told a crowd of news cameras, journalists and well-wishers at the gate of the Australia Zoo. "And his message was conservation, and he was such a strong person that people all over the world believed in him."

Irwin, who described his son as his "best mate ever," reiterated the family's wishes not to have a state funeral, as offered by Prime Minister John Howard, saying, "He's just an ordinary bloke and he wants to be remembered as an ordinary bloke."

16. I was so sorry to hear that the croc hunter had passed, but my sorry was not for him , but for his family...For those who know that Steve is in a better place I know people hear that and get angry because thay think "this was a better place" because their loved one was in it....I know that saying that does not do justice for the sorrow and the intense pain the loved one feels , but it is still true......Steve Irwin is now where the Maker of the animals he loved so is ......But that does not really comfort his loved ones too much does it....But it will eventually!!!! To his children Your Father was a true Animal warrior and i know I have only seen him through T.V. you can still see the eyes of that person and I may not have known your father personally ,but I know that the love he had for his family was as intense as the love he had for your mother ....My God be with with you all in this heartbreaking time and my your faith and love carry you through......God Bless you

17. I will say my heart goes out to Terri,Bindi And Bob. I too know what it is like to lose the father of your children in such a bizarre way and so unexpected. Steve Irwin was one of those people you love to see because he was himself and loved life- family- everything. He showed me how to look at animals and life in such a way that is hard to explain. Steve Irwin was one of a kind. You'll always be in our hearts. To the Irwin family you will be in prayers and may God give you the strength to get through this.

I always thought he was invincible, the way he demonstrated his expertise tim e and time again. My daughter who is 13 currently does wilflife documentaries and if it wasnt for the Croc Hunter, she never would have been so keen about wilflide conservation. Our hearts go out to Teri, Bindi and Little Bob. Rest in Peace CrocMan.

19. I have cried when three celebrities passed on. These were: Walt Disney, Roy Rogers and now Steve Irwin. They all contributed to our children's imagination and urged them to follow their dreams. Steve's death is a great loss to people around the world and he will be sorely missed. Hopefully his message of conservation will be his legacy and will continue forever. "Crikey, Steve." You went out the way all of us want to go; doing what we love.

20. Terri (I hope that you're reading these wonderful, heartfelt messages from fans and friends),
I just wanted to tell you that you and your family are in my prayers. Steve was such a blessing to many of us all around the world. His work here was God's plan and so was his death. All things are for His (God's) purpose and glory - even though we may not understand it or know why. My heart aches for you and your children but rejoices for the Lord's kingdom. I can't imagine the pain you're going through - but please know that God is The Comforter and is with you always. Peace be with you.

23. We would like to offer our condolences to Steve Irwin's family. The world will sorely miss him. He did so much in the field of animal conservation. I guess all we can ask is that we change the world for the better in some way before our time is up. Steve Irwin surely did that.

24. My heart goes out to his family and friends. My prayers are with them as they go through this difficult time. May they have strength in our prayers and thoughts. Steve was an amazing man. The first time I saw him, I was channel surfing when I thought I just saw a man jump into the water and grap a croc. I switched back and my eyes were correct. I had never seen anyone do this before. My first thought was, Man this guy is nuts! I continued to watch his show for years after. He was so passionate about the animal kingdom. He opened up his heart and showed you his soul. That's what made his so special. He will be missed greatly.

27. Even though it was a tragic, tragic freak accident that took wonderful Steve Irwin's life, I think that we should feel some sense of comfort knowing he died doing what he absolutely adored and loved most in life. I know he would have wanted to live longer and see his children grow and prosper, but I have to keep telling myself - how much worse would it have been to have lost him to cancer? Or a brain aneurysm? Or a CAR accident? I take solace, as I hope his family will some day if not now, that he died without suffering and within the natural world that he gave his life and love for.

God bless you, Steve, and all your family and friends.
