Irwin's Dad: "We Were Good Mates"

Steve Irwin's dad addresses crowdIn the first public comments by Steve Irwin's family since his death on Monday, his father thanked his son's many fans for their messages of support.

"There's never been anybody else that I know of that had the personality that Steve had, and the strength, and the conviction of what he believed in," his father told a crowd of news cameras, journalists and well-wishers at the gate of the Australia Zoo. "And his message was conservation, and he was such a strong person that people all over the world believed in him."

Irwin, who described his son as his "best mate ever," reiterated the family's wishes not to have a state funeral, as offered by Prime Minister John Howard, saying, "He's just an ordinary bloke and he wants to be remembered as an ordinary bloke."

46. My family was so sorry to learn of Steve Irwins death. A member of my family was also taken from us in a freak accident leaving young children for their mother to raise. It is not going to be an easy task but Terry seems like a woman up to the job. God bless her, their children and all of their family and friends. My condolences to all who knew and loved Steve.

47. Would that each and every one of us could live and die doing the very thing that gave us passion. Steve has left behind a legacy that only those who live fearlessly can leave. To honor him is to live passionately, with conviction and with courage. Go do the thing that makes your spirit soar, and live the life of your dreams.

49. There can't be a single person in the world that didn't fall in love with Steve Irwin, his wife, and his children. Literally millions of people feel now that they have lost a close friend, even those most of them have never even seen him in person. Telling the family that he's in a better place won't mean a thing to them now, but will years from now. In the meantime, we can just pray that they feel as little pain as possible. Thank you, Terri, for sharing your wonderful husband with us for so many years.

50. Absolutely tragic. I hope that people will remember that Steve and all of the other "nature" hunters were very fortunate something like this didn't happen sooner. These are WILD animals...no conscience, no remorse and they are doing what WILD animals do...defending themselves. They are not humans. I am so sorry for this whole family. But they are dealing with animals and they cannot be trusted to make good decisions about situations such as this.

53. I am so sorry for your loss. Like so many others my heart aches for your family and close friends. Terri keep in mind only a few women experience the LOVE Steve had for you even if they lived to be a 100. The Love showed on his face for you and his children. To his Dad, you raised a wonderful human being . Again I'm sorry May God Bless you all with his strength you will get through this and carry on like Steve would have wanted everyone to do. As they say time heals all. cynthia

55. It has kept me up for nights now, thinking about Steve. I will really miss him, along with billions of other people, and I am truly sorry for his family at Australia Zoo. Not only Terri, Bindi, and Bob, but also Wes, Brian, and all the other employees at the Zoo, and everyone else that personally worked with Steve. I think that, no matter on what level you were to him, he made you feel like part of his family. That, in itself, is a blessing for his family, because they will never be far from help and comfort. Crikey, Steve, we're all going to miss you, and I just hope that heaven is "chock a block" full of Crocs, snakes, and all the other animals that you helped rescue in your lifetime. God Bless you, and God Bless your family.

56. My condolences to the Irwin Family; my family's feeling of loss of Steve can't compare to his family's. We saw a man with a passion for life and reverence for nature and deep love for his family. I feel worse for his family. The Crocodile Hunter was the bomb to me, "the man". I think his spirit will ever be watching over the creatures of his homeland. He brought a new dimension of education, apppreciation and respect for our environment. Loveable, brave, goofy, that's what made me turn on "Animal Planet". You are missed but will never be forgotten.
G'day to ya, Crocodile Hunter!

57. Many many communities everywhere all over the world are deeply saddened by the news of Steve Irwins fatal accident doing what he loved best...being an educator and adventurer ...living his life with passion, and zest to the fullest. I'm so personally saddened for his family and his kids who will have to grow up without him...but, he will always be with them in spirit. God Bless...we all understand life and death, but when it happens to you personally...each person has to find their own way to grieve privately...even celebrities.

58. It is obvious how much Mr. Irwin loved his son, Steve. No one ever plans to bury their children, we figure they'll bury us. When I lost my brother last year, my father's worst nightmare came true. Bless you, Mr. Irwin, and all of Steve's loved ones. The world stands in awe of your love and commitment to Steve's memory.
