Irwin's Dad: "We Were Good Mates"

Steve Irwin's dad addresses crowdIn the first public comments by Steve Irwin's family since his death on Monday, his father thanked his son's many fans for their messages of support.

"There's never been anybody else that I know of that had the personality that Steve had, and the strength, and the conviction of what he believed in," his father told a crowd of news cameras, journalists and well-wishers at the gate of the Australia Zoo. "And his message was conservation, and he was such a strong person that people all over the world believed in him."

Irwin, who described his son as his "best mate ever," reiterated the family's wishes not to have a state funeral, as offered by Prime Minister John Howard, saying, "He's just an ordinary bloke and he wants to be remembered as an ordinary bloke."

61. We too were shocked at this great loss. We watched Steve's show whenever we could. We loved the way he got so excited about any kind of animal, we ended up just as excited as he was. Steve made you feel like you were right there with him. We will miss his smile, his humor and his passion for animals. Teri, Bindi, Bob, and the rest of the Irwin family, we are so sorry for your loss. Steve will always be remembered at our house.

64. R.I.P. Steve. I am a huge fan of yours. I have been watching your shows for as long as I can remember. I remember when I went to Austrailia with my friend and went to your zoo, I was amazed. I watched your croc feeding and my friend and I also talked to you after the feeding and asked you questions. I'm glad that your family decided to have a private funeral for you instead of a state funeral. My regards and condolences to your wife Terri, your father Bob, and your two beautiful children Bindi and Robert. I'll always remember you in my heart and my family will too. I always thought that you were a great guy, and I will always think that forever and a day.

66. This is a Thank You to Steve Irwins father, wife and his children. Thank you for sharing him with all of us. He was a wonderful mentor for my son Matthew . My son loved animals from the time he was born. He started watching Steve when he was 1 1/2 yrs old . I have a video of my son when he was 3yrs old pretending to be Steve, as he was explaining the differences in the animals he was showing to me . Mind you they were stuffed. My son has been watching Steve for the past 10 years faithfully. He is planning on a future working in the same field with wild animals. He has asked me repeaditally to go to Africa, and Austrilia., So he can see the wildlife. My son is very saddened by the passing of the terrific Steve who he learned so much from. We had the Animal Vhannel on like usual on Sunday and my son could not watch Steve"It is to sad, I can not watch this right now" and these are the words of a 10 yr old. My gratitude, my condolences for your loss, and my preyers go to the Family of The Wonderful Steve Irwin. A great person who has touched so many lives in a positive way.
We will all miss him, we all Love him and he will be in everyone's heart always.

67. My heart is broken with this news of losing Steve Irwin. He seemed to be such a wonderful guy with a beautiful blessed heart that few people on earth have. His human spirit was an inspiration to all humans...and his love and concern for animals and their habitat was amazing. I pray that Terri and little Bindi and little Robert will be able to heal through time and through the memory of Steve's love and laughter....and I hope to one day watch Steve's children on the Discovery Channel or Animal Planet with a documentary to protect our environment and the habitats of animals...........but in a very safe way.

Steve was a great mentor for my son.
My son loved animals from the time he was born. He started watching Steve when he was 1 1/2yrs old. 70. What a larger than life, wonderful warrier he was! No one will ever take his place here on earth. Steve gave us his passion for the nature world and he passed on great education to many who, otherwise (me included!) , would never have learned at all. Anyone with that much zest for life and true passion for what he believed in HAS to be doing what he loves most in heaven! My heart breaks for his family but I'm sure he would want them to pick up the torch and carry it forward. God Bless Steve Irwin and his family!

71. Words cannot express how truly sad we are in the passing of Mr. Steven Irwin, aka "The Crocodile Hunter". We have watched him since the beginning, and it is because of Steve Irwin that my 12 year old developmentally delayed son wants to be a zoo keeper. My son idolized him and wanted to go to Austrailia to meet him in person; when I had to break the news to my son that "The Croc Hunter" had passed away my son was devastated.
Thank you Steve for so many years of dedication, you changed many more lives than I think you or any of us will ever know.
My deepest condolences go out to his family and close "mates" who he called family also. You will truly be missed.
God bless you and the family you leave behind.

72. Dear Mr. Irwin,
Thank you so very much for sharing your son with us. You taught him all that he knew and he loved you so much for that.
Steve, in turn, taught his children in the same way you taught him--hands on.
Now, you will be the one to teach his children in the way you taught your son.
They will come to love you even more than they do now, and you will be the future one to help them keep the legacy from past generations.
God Bless you in your quest to teach Steve's children, being not just a Granpa, but also a new father figure.
Terri, God Bless you as you continue the legacy, too. You may feel terribly overwhelmed now, but I believe Steve's Dad will do all that he can so that you do not feel too alone in that aspect.
Lean on each other for support--for now you, Steve's Dad and the kids are all that is left of the Irwin Family. Stick together and all will eventually fall into place.
At least as well as it can.
GOODSPEED, STEVE! HEAVEN JUST GOT ANOTHER ANGEL!
Love Always,
A fan with good wishes for all
