In a radio interview later Thursday, Hilton claimed that she had been returning from a charity event when she was stopped by police.

"It was nothing," said Hilton, 25, who is as famous for her dedication to partying as she is for her skills as a singer and actress.

Hilton said she was "starving because I had not ate all day" and possibly "speeding a little bit" on her way to grab a bite.

"I was just really hungry, and I wanted to have an In-N-Out burger," she said, plugging a popular local fast-food chain.

Hilton insisted she had "one margarita" at the event, which may have sent her over the limit because she drank it on an empty stomach.

A spokesman for Hilton said her blood-alcohol level was 0.08 per cent - the legal definition of intoxication under California law.

Hilton suggested that police only arrested her because the incident occurred in front of the paparazzi.

"There was a lot of paparazzi around, so I think they were trying to make a statement," she said. "Everything I do is blown out of proportion, and it really hurts my feelings."

Hilton is scheduled to be arraigned on September 28, according to the city attorney's office. Penalties for a first drunk-driving arrest typically include a fine, probation, an alcohol-rehabilitation programme, license suspension and "other DUI-related conditions" such as community service.

The maximum penalty for a first misdemeanour DUI arrest is a 1,000 dollar fine and six months in jail.

95. Finally she will have to take responsabilty for her actions. We have all seen her rush off in her vehicles in the past diving drunk. It is about time that she gets busted for it. Just like anyone else. Paris isn't above the law.
