Gwen Gets Into Madonna's Groove

Gwen Stefani and Madonna have a lot in common: stellar music careers, motherhood, British husbands. But despite the fact that they are both known for their individual style, these days Gwen looks to be taking a cue from her older pop cohort.

Stefani was recently photographed sporting an outfit similar to Madonna's uniform of track suits and oversized shades.

While you can argue that almost everyone has copied Madonna's style at one point or another, even die-hard Stefaniacs have to admit her decades old blond ambition 'do could use a rest.

And despite the fact that imitation is the best form of flattery, we just hope Gwen doesn't get swept away into mimicking any of Madonna's cinematic pursuits.

17. This is... news? Track suits? Come on.

Madonna is, and always has been, a singer of only modest accomplishment with an astonishing talent for self-promotion. She has produced music that I've enjoyed listening to, but not a single track that I'd pay for... or waste the time downloading free, for that matter. Bland middle-of-the-road pop drivel sold by carefully orchestrated controversy does not make a great artist. My interest in Madonna is driven largely by the fact that her current marketing phase is wrapped up in "spirituality" (about as legitimate as a teenager playing with tarot cards), and I'm curious to see how she'll play off inevitably abandoning this persona. Not that I don't believe she can transition into the next phase without a substantial impact on her career, but that rejecting her religion of the moment (especially when it's a trendy pop-occult mystic group like these "kabbalist-for-cash splinter groups she's affiliated with, rather than a large safe mainstream target like Catholicism) is a potentially very perilous venture for a media figure.

Gwen Stefani, on the other hand... I really enjoyed her old band. What exactly has she done since she abandoned them that hasn't required a massive media blitz to get people interested? The more you feel you must advertise at me how excellent your product is, the less inclined I am to believe it's anything but rubbish. Get a haircut, and accomplish something worth media attention other than successfully giving birth, a feat mirrored a thousand times daily by people who are entirely bereft of money and fame.

19. tiffany, you're a moron. they both rock. if they didn't neither would be so popular. when it comes down to it, it's a matter of musical taste. So what if they wear the same outfit? Tracksuits are comfortable and popular. Just because Madonna was around first (Being born well before Gwen) doesn't make Madonna a trendsetter when it comes to wearing this outfit. Lots of moms do. Tracksuits are comfortable and lightweight. If you had to carry around a kid all the time, wouldn't you want to be comfortable? Who cares. And PS, lots of people wear sunglasses as well, even non-celebrities. Madonna and Gwen are real people just like us all. And they both rock!

20. Although i like Madonna, i think she is overrated. She has an ear for a catchy tune thats for sure but her writing is mediocre. If you listen to Gwen's lyrics they actually make sense and are relatable. Try listening to Madonna's songs and concentrate on JUST the words. Lacks originality and creativity. Gwen's lyrics are more substantial. Specially her ballads. I use to thought of Madonna as a true artists in the 80s and 90s. Ever pushing the envelope. Now she's just a performer/business woman. But both ladies deserves respect.

22. Aol makes these silly and sometime entirely boring comparison that lack any substance whatsoever. I bet half the women in America own track suits and 1/2 of those have black ones. Try to be more original with this ridiculous filler. Is this journalism?

26. In response to Flobaby's comment.....so gwen has a set of dolls coming out for the public to buy. Big deal, it's just another attempt for celebs to make money off their looks and no their talent. I think having a doll made after yourself is quite stupid, but hey...whatever works for them. Madonna has never needed a doll size replica of herself for the public to buy, she's always been quite successful in marketing herself. She's one of the most business savvy people in entertainment to date.

I'm not going to insult Gwen, she's doing her own thing and I like a couple of No Doubt songs, but I am a Madonna fan. I like musicians who roll with tides and change their music up a bit. Madonna keeps her fans guessing on what she's going to do next. I don't know what Gwen does, I haven't bought on CD she's made and quite frankly....I think the story they ran is one of the stupidiest to date and the fact that y'all are insulting each other over it is pathetic.

Everyone has is entitled to their own opinion without being attacked or judged for it.

27. DO WE REALLY FUGGING CARE???????????

28. First of all, the fact that this is the "big story" is nothing short of ridiculous. Secondly, to compare Gwen Stefani to a nasty gap-toothed Madonna is absolutely obsurd. How does anyone have any respect whatsoever for a woman who mocks the Vatican (in Vatican city, mind you) by staging her own crucifixion. I'm all about expressing your opinion and expressing yourself artistically, but to play Jesus like she did in the place that she did it was absolutely disrespectful to anyone, Catholic or not. Who does this woman think she is? She needs a wake up call. Madonna--YOU ARE NOT JESUS, NOR ARE YOU GOD. ALSO--FIND A NEW TRADEMARK, BEING GAP-TOOTHED IS NOT CUTE, SWEETHEART!! Getting back to the subject of debate, Gwen Stefani is a class act with meaningful lyrics and a beautiful voice, unlike, (for a lack of a better insult, I will simply call her the most insulting name of all, which she sacreligiously stole from the Virgin Mary herself) MADONNA.

29. Hello?

Gwen Stefani popularized track pants in the 90's!

Doesn't anyone remember this stuff?

Posted at 9:45PM on Sep 15th 2006 by Maggie

30. Madonna is the best. I don't think anyone can compare to her. She is the queen, an icon. She has done much more for the music industry than Gwen and everyone knows it!!!!!!!!!!!
