TV's Top News Ladies: Will They Sink or Swim?

With Meredith Vieira's debut on "Today" this morning, the game of musical anchor chairs between Vieira, Katie Couric and Rosie O'Donnell is now complete. So we're left to wonder: which of these women will score big in the ratings and which will fall flat on her face?
Meredith Viera, Katie Couric, and Rosie O'Donnell
Couric scored 13 million viewers in her debut as anchor of "The CBS Evening News" and, while her audience declined slightly by week's end, she still led NBC and ABC by three million viewers. But week two has gotten off to a poor start as Katie dropped to third place on Monday with 7.49 million viewers, slightly behind ABC's 7.87 million and NBC's 8.27 million.

Katie anchored Monday's newscast, the fifth anniversary of 9/11, from Ground Zero and seemed to have trouble holding back tears as she closed the telecast.

While rumors of Rosie O'Donnell clashing with her fellow "View" co-hosts have surfaced (who didn't see that coming?), Rosie's debut on the show also equaled ratings gold -- four million people tuned in, a 54% bump over the same day last year.

Sources have told TMZ that Rosie has complained about the show's production and that Elisabeth Hasselbeck has been openly hostile to her. Rosie even butted heads with Barbara Walters before Rosie even debuted -- Walters didn't approve of Rosie's cryptic blog messages she wrote on her site.

Rosie's rep denies rumors of bad blood, saying, "Everyone gets along great."

And finally, it will take a few days to see how Meredith Vieira does in her new locale, but the former "View"-er did show signs of at least being somewhat nervous (who wouldn't be?) as she flubbed a line on her first toss to commercial break.

31. I really don't have anything against Rosie, I am sure she is a nice person. But I get tired of her mouth. I am not against Gay rights and all, but I think on the show she has said more than I care to hear about her personal life that involves the subject. To me she will kill the program.

33. I don't think any of the three are in a better position than their last position, meaning as the way they fit in. I DON'T know what all the fuss is for Katie Couric, the way I look at it she has an 18 minute News program, that is minus the station breaks and other people reporting on location. Is she worth 10-15 Million $$$$'s ????????? Think about it NBC.

34. Amazing how many people say they "don't like" Rosie. I think The View has new life and new relevance now. Look at how everyone is talking about it. Let's face the REAL issue here. Most of the people between coasts in this backward thinking country are still homophobic.

36. no matter how hard they push meredith - she'll never take the place of KATIE. i hardly watch TODAY anymore... KATIE'S talent for spontaneity and bubbliness and intervew talent - WASTED on a nightly news show that no one watches. when i can check the cable news networks any time of day - why would i ??
and rosie on the view - NEVER.

37. I think Rosie is great on The View. The show is so much more fun and entertaing now than it was. With two comics on the show, playing off each other, it's really great. I even think Elizabeth has gotten better with the new combo. I love it when Barbara is on as well. But Rosie and Joy really stir things up. They know how to play off one another like good comics do. Everybody, give it a rest! It's an entertaing show!

38. starting with Rosie, first and foremost, I think that the view needs a whole new make over Barbara. Someone who is professional and fun like you. Wouldnt that be great........L

39. Why such bad pictures of these three women? Does TMZ.com have something against them? And why didn't you include a "none" under "Which show made the worst move?" I think all three shows made excellent choices.

Careful TMZ.com, your sexism is showing.

40. I think the View made an enormous mistake removing Star Jones. She was bright, articulate and an African-American. Now the show is lily white (remember when it was two white women and an Asian-American and African-American?) Rosie is too large a personality to play on a team unless she is in charge. I can't imagine what Barbara Walters was thinking when she picked her, unless Barbara is planning to retire.

41. i think Rosie was like a shot of adrenalin to the usually boring
cackling View.

I don't go along with her politics and wish she'd keep a lid on her
opinions; but she has a presence that radiates vivacity,
good nature, humor, she makes the show come alive.

Nothing against little Mrs. Hasselbeck...but she adds nothing
of gravitas or humor to the group. A sweet kid but really
not ready for prime time.

I'd like to hear more from Joy Behar (are you sure she isn't really "Bette Midler")..she can be witty but seems a bit subdued of late.

Barbara appearing daily makes her seem like a school marm
afraid the kids will wreck the class if she isn't present.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder Barbara...take a hint..

42. take 'the view off the air. no fun watching it now, who wants to watch an interview show (20/20) that early in morning. Joy is not her comedic self, Elisabeth is muffled with her views. Can't understand why they gave chair to loud mouth Rosie. Time to show her the door before it slams in all their faces. Seems like the only smart one was Star - she walked out before the door slammed into her. Barbara you should have known that this would be a disaster coming.

43. Merdith is trying hard to fit in on the the Today Show but can't seem to connect yet. I don't think she will succeed. This is not the view.

44. No fun watching the view now. Joy is not her comedic self-finding humor in every thing . Elisabeth is muffled and Barbara does on interview (20/20) every day. Big mouth ignorant Rosie should be shown the door before it slams on all of them. I do not watch the view now.

45. Katie will always need someone like Matt to be the counterpoint to her roughness. So her going solo was not a good move for anyone. Rosie has a history of falling into animosity with her colleagues, so she won't last. Meredith has a good chance of staying on if she stops talking over everyone else -- she got used to that on The View. NBC would have done well to promote from within. Natalie Morales would have been a good choice to replace Katie.
