"Dog" Chapman Arrested, Faces Extradition

Duane MSNBC's Rita Cosby is reporting that Duane Dog Chapman, star of the A&E reality series "Dog the Bounty Hunter," and two members of his bounty hunting team (including his son) were arrested by U.S. officials today for extradition to Mexico. Cosby is reporting that Mexican government officials wanted the three men sent back there in relation to a three-year-old case.

In 2003, Chapman traveled to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico to retrieve Max Factor cosmetics heir Andrew Luster, who was wanted in the U.S. on rape charges. Luster is now in jail, serving a 124-year term. The Chapmans were jailed in Mexico for a brief time for the incident three years ago. Bounty hunting is considered a crime in Mexico.

Dog's wife, Beth Chapman, said 12 armed marshals "came through the door" at 6:00AM this morning. She said they took their daughter's boyfriend down at gunpoint. Dog was sleeping at the time.

TMZ spoke with Nicky Credic from the U.S. Marshals Office. She said, "The arrest warrant was signed by a U.S. magistrate in Hawaii on September 13. The warrant was based on a formal request based on a diplomatic note from the government of Mexico."

1742. We are praying for you and your family Dog. This is the biggest travesty of justice that I have heard of in a long time. I think Luster's family paid off the Mexican government or something to get them to go this far with this. Its all about money and the Mexican governments lack of money.

1743. Sandra.

Here is a letter you can copy and paste and use to send your comments to the government agencies mentioned after the letter;
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

I as an American am terrified. I do not understand why our country the Land of the Free, is complying with anything the Mexican government requests. I am ashamed to be an American today! Something must be done to retain the trust and faith in the US Government. I have attached a link that will allow you to see how many American%u2019s are outraged and fearful how their own government can allow such a travesty of justice.

These three individual%u2019s, Duane Dog Chapman, Leland Chapman and Tim Youngblood Chapman; they went and captured Andrew Luster who brutally raped many women in the United States, they gave relief to many women knowing that because of Dog and his Crew that America would be safe of Luster%u2019s rage against women. Now they are facing extradition to Mexico on charges of Restraint of an Individuals Liberties, according to Mexican officials. The penalty for this charge; 6 months to 4 years, which can include torture and possible death.
We must protect American citizens from such brutality. How can an American Judge sign the death warrant of Dog, Leland and Tim for such a %u2018petty charge%u2019, considering the result being that the Dog and Crew brought a US wanted fugitive to justice? Is this the reward they will receive for bringing Andrew Luster to prison after being convicted in absentia? Is this how our government will actually show appreciation of what Dog and Crew did? If so, it is shameful, and I am not proud to be an American today!

Supporters have already cancelled trips to Mexico, boycotting Mexican business, and restaurants on American Soil, and we are also boycotting Max Factor products.
We will send our message of disbelief and support any way we can for Dog, Leland, Tim and their families.

Please step in and up and show the American people that this can not and will not happen to any Americans and we will not take it anymore. Show the American people that we can have faith and trust in our government to protect us all from such travesties of justice.

This can not happen in America to Americans!

God Bless Us all and whoever can make the decision to save our faith in America!!!

Sincerely,

DO YOUR THING PEOPLE, WE SHALL PREVAIL AND SAVE DOG,LELAND, TIM AND THEIR FAMILIES FROM THIS DISGRACEFUL TRAVESTY OF JUSTICE

1745. Let's not deify the Dog here (as much as I like to watch the show). He is no altruistic hero. Here is a reality check:
1. He went into Mexico and knowingly broke their law, to serve his career/gain publicity. If his goal was simply to "get a rapist off the streets" he could have located Luster, informed U.S. or Mexican authorities, and turned him over to them. Pursuant to the extradition treaty, Mexico would have had to turn him over to the U.S., rapist off the streets. But Dog wanted fame/notoriety/money and insisted on breaking the law to do it himself. Dumb.
2. Dog does not help society by "locking up criminals/fugitives." The people he apprehends on the show are roaming the streets because Dog posted bail for them in the first place. Dog puts criminals on the streets for profit, and then apprehends them when they violate parole so as to protect his profit. Once he apprehends the criminals, he posts bail again, takes his 10-15% cut again, and profits again.
He is not a hero. He is a businessman. Businessmen cannot expect to break the law in furtherance of their busisness and not be punished.

1749. The following letter was sent to Montel Williams

The Montel Williams Show
433 West 53rd Street
New York, NY 10019
Attn: Viewer Services
www.montelshow.com/tell/

Dear Mr. Williams:

The purpose of this e-mail is to ask for assistance in the stopping of extradition and charges pending against Dog, LeLand and Tim Chapman. I am sure you are aware of the situation, which presents itself against Dog The Bounty Hunter, LeLand and Tim Chapman as it relates to the return of one Andrew Stuart Luster for 86 counts of sexual related crimes and convicted in 2003.

I have long been an admirer of you and your show. I have always been touched by your deep regard for human rights, the “greater good” and in particular your efforts to STOP THE VIOLENCE TOWARDS WOMEN. While you and Dog Chapman may have different methodologies to achieve the same end, you and Dog Chapman share the same goals.

I (we – the supporters of Dog on) need your help

www.tmz.com/2006/09/14/dog-chapman-arrested-faces-extradition/120#comments

While our letter writing and telephone call campaigns to the US Government and been active since his arrest, we are now discovering that “it appears” most of the Government Officials are no longer interested in hearing from us or are “finger pointing” us to another Government Agency to voice our dissatisfaction regarding the Dog Situation. Free the Dog Petitions are circulating throughout the Internet.

While my professional forte is neither within International Relations nor International Law, and I am sure there is information held closely to the vest of US Law Enforcement, what has occurred appears to be a travesty as well as a tragedy on several different levels.

There are many questions that have been posed by the posters of the aforementioned board. Many of them boil down to why did the Mexican government wait 3 years (just before the bond expired I understand) before asking the US to arrest Dog and Company. How could the US government honor such a request?

Did Dog locating and returning to justice such a sick man not serve the “greater good” of humanity? (There was a report from a psychiatrist on Andrew Luster, which stated he had total disregard for woman, demanded control of people and felt he was above the law.) Everything the psychiatrist said in her report appears to be accurate from what we can tell by current accounts.

Then there was the infamous PAYBACK journal. I shutter to think what was going to happen if Dog had not brought him to justice. So do Luster’s victims.

Luster filed bankruptcy so his victims could not receive restitution. My understanding is that Luster has a $70 million trust fund and received $70,000 in interest payments annually. This is a sad commentary to our system. Even sadder was Elizabeth Luster suing one his defense attorneys for return of money (unclear if it was bond money or legal fees or both.). I must tell you, when I read “it appears” Luster is suing one of the victims and her boyfriend in California for defamation of character; I truly see the narcissism of Luster.

Please help us …

Respectfully submitted

1750. I think this stinks! Dog Chapman and his partners do what no one else has been able to do. He IS what is good in mankind. He and his family take a lot of chances doing what they believe in. Mexico should be ashamed. In this case they captured a real sleezeball who should be put away for the rest of his life with no possible parole. My hat is off to the entire Chapman family and crew. You have my thanks...keep up the good work...let's all get behind them so they come out of this nightmare in tact.

1752. I am ashamed that our govt would allow this to happen. Shame on the judge who allowed there to be a bail set. He shouldve known that Lester could post that. Dog and his family did the right thing. Lester is a very sick man and the Mexican govt as well as our American govt should be greatful that Dog did what our FBI agents couldnt do!

Romeo - Welcome to our board. While we do not agree with DOG HATER's opinion we accept his words as his opinion. We defend his right to express his opinions ... This is what america is all about ... people having the FREEDOM to express their opinions without fear of reprisal ...

To assure that Dog and comany does not fall into the hands of those who would do him harm, our best strategy to continue writing and calling those who can make a difference. I posted a letter I just sent to the Montel Williams show asking for his assistance for Dog ....

Please everybody feel free to cut and paste the letter and resend to Montel ... The more of us that do the better the impact since the government clearly is tired of hearing from us ...

I have worked in the corporate legal defense of such businessmen. I think white collar criminals should be punished just as severely as others. I am not sure your point. My point is that he is not some altruistic hero. He makes considerable money doing what he does (posting bail so that criminals can get back on the streets, then recapturing them when they violate parole so that he can again make money on posting their bail and releasing criminals to the streets). His pseudo-heroic behavior (disguising his profit motives) does not justify violating Mexican kidnapping law in the name of publicity/$$$/
