Cousteau Family Clash Over Croc Hunter

A very public clash of opinions has broken out between Jean-Michel Cousteau and his nephew Philippe over the late naturalist Steve Irwin -- and it's just the latest face-off in the continuing conflict amongst the scions of the life aquatic's first family.

One source who knows the family tells TMZ that Jean-Michel's remarks yesterday, when he slammed the beloved Irwin for his "very misleading" methods on the same day of his public memorial service, may have been an attempt on the part of Jean-Michel to steal PR thunder from his nephew and is not out of character for Jean-Michel. (Philippe was Irwin's partner on the fateful sea voyage that cost him his life.) Other sources say that the seemingly insensitive remarks are the result of "cultural differences" and that Jean-Michel may not have realized how inflammatory his words might be.

Jean-Michel, who is the eldest son of sea-explorer legend Jacques Cousteau, told reporters that he thought Irwin, in his "Crocodile Hunter" shows and beyond, would "interfere with nature, jump on animals, grab them...It appeals to a lot of people, but I think it's very misleading. You don't touch nature, you just look at it. And that's why I'm still alive." (Jean-Michel also said that he found the death "unfortunate" and said he had "a lot of respect" for Irwin.)

But not a fortnight ago, Philippe paid sincere homage to his producing partner and friend on "Larry King Live," saying he was amazed at "how dedicated Steve was and how much he really loved being out there...and also how much the people around him cared for him." Reps for Jean-Michel, Philippe, the Irwin family, and Discovery Channel did not comment on the spat, but this latest disagreement certainly isn't the first time various factions in the Cousteau family have sparred.

In 2001, Francine Cousteau, Jacques' second (and much younger) wife, took legal action to block Philippe, his sister Alexandra, and his mother Jan from using the name Cousteau Foundation, which was named after Philippe's father, also named Philippe, because it might confuse people who thought it was the Cousteau Society, which she administered. (The elder Philippe died in a seaplane crash in 1979.)

Philippe's relationship with his grandfather wasn't exactly the stuff of Hallmark cards, either. He told a scuba diving publication in 2003 that he saw Jacques, who died in 1997, only a few times a year, and added, "Unfortunately, he was not really a father figure to me." Jean-Michel, for his part, battled with his own father over a resort in Fiji that bore the Cousteau name; Jacques spent his later years trying to prevent his son from exploiting the Cousteau name for tourist profit.

16. Jean-Michel? Never heard of him. Maybe because he is a big NOTHING. Steve Irwin has changed the world and what our children are going to think of wildlife in the future. F%&^ Jean-MIchel!

17. I have to agree with Jean Michel's comments. Mr. Irwins shows were not so as educational as they were shock TV. I think it was a much more tragic death for the girlfriend of that grizzly bear nut guy in Alaska. Steve may have not tortured these animals but he did goad and provoke them in order to get a response. Jean Michel Cousteau has alot more years of experience than his nephew or Steve. The reason Steve was more worldly known, was his shock TV animal show, no doubt. Dangling a chicken over some crocks head is purely for entertainment, period.

19. Wow, its kind of unbelievable that even here some are attacking him.
Fact is he did more POSITIVE for wildlife than posters 4 6 9 ...and 99.9% of humanity.
We live in a free society so people can make judgements on how he interacted with animals. What is not in dispute is the vast number of animals HE SAVED behind the scenes away from the zoo and away from his tv show. He also bought alot of land to be forever preserved.

20. There was no reason nor excuse for the things Jean Michale Cousteaus said yesterday.
Yesterday was a day of remembering and honoring Steve Irwon for the life he led and the accomplishments he made, I don't care if you can't stand someone, you don't jump on a bandwagon the day of their memorial and badmouth the person.
He really needs to apologize to Terry, Bindi and Bob and the rest of the Irwin family and thank god it was not a member of his family that died from such a horrible accident.
He should be ashamed of himself as should all the people who said mean things about Steve Irwin.
No matter if you liked his show or not, it was not the show nor his movies that he was being recognized for it was for the wildlife he saved and for all the animals in the world which his foundation has touched.
Mr Coustaeu needs to get some manners.

22. for #9 to say that he means no disrespect to steve irwin then to turn around and say that "he got what he deserved", shows that he truly did not understand the man and don't understand stand the meaning of empathy. as for the squabble, differing views happen. however, jean-michel has done what for conservation? times change, Jack hanna spoke of Steve Irwin's style and said in interviews that he admired Irwin, even though he himself may not have taken the same risks. What about Jeff Corwin who I see getting as close to the animals as Steve irwin did? For those people who think that Steve Irwin did what he did to promote himself, this is ridiculous. Steve Irwin was a champion for wildlife conservation and taught a lot of people how to see the beauty in animals that were considered vile and horrible.
Steve, miss you mate and God bless you for allowing us to get up close and personal to animals many are afraid to touch.

23. Just one more comment on the rude Cousteaus's remark of
"that's why I am still alive"

Who cares if your still alive? Who are you anyway? I have heard of your Brother who was famous and his son Philippe, but not you.

Somehow, you have come to think you are important to the people of this world which I again remark, who are you?

Philippe should be proud of himself and the way he has led his life. Hopefully he will go on saving wildlife because of the man Steve Irwin was. I applaud him for his honesty and his trying to save Steve's life that fateful day.

Now who will save you Mr.Jean-Michel Cousteau, from yourself??

The words from the poem that was read last night were true to heart as even I can hear the crocodiles crying for Steve.

Who will cry for you?

24. Steve was a media whore like so many others. What the hell did he conserve anyway? He brought injured animals back to his zoo, nursed them to health, and then paraded them on TV. They would of been better off dying in the wild rather than becoming one of his pets! This guy gets no sympathy from me, and I'm not alone. Just let wild animals be wild. VIVA LA FRANCE!

25. Yeah, its sad that Irwin died in a freak accident. Over the last 100 years only three people have supposedly died from interactions with Sting Rays. SInce Irwins death it has been reported in the mainstream press that 10 Sting Rays have been killed by people in the area of Australia where Irwin died: Where is the justice in that? I don't get it, for all his shortcomings (Media Whore--he was that) I think he must be saying "Chrickey, mates leave the Sting Rays alone and bugger off". They are just wild animals, I got to close and that's the name of that tune. The way people are carrying on about his untimely death you'd think the Pope, or another fricking Kennedy died. I mean really. You want to honor his memory: LEAVE WILD ANIMALS ALONE, THEY ARE ENTITLED TO BE UNMOLESTED. That's just my opinion and don't try to make me out like I'm some "bad" person because I think this was a forseen possible outcome. He died, too bad, leave the Sting Rays the fuck alone!

26. Steve said, "The things that people love, they will try to save." And his
purpose was to help people understand and care about crocs, and all
other creatures, great and small. Also, his love for his family was unparalleled. A real family man. I will miss him.

28. Personally my thought on Jean-Michel Cousteau's comments is more a case of "bad timing". If the comment were made a couple of days from now, nobody would be so upset as now.

Still, Jean-Michel Cousteau comments on Steve Irwin, should give anyone who studies/protects/stewards the enviroment some pause. Even if Jean-Michel's(and his father) were of an earlier/different style of nature studies than of today's "hand on" approach to nature studies. Still it worked for him.

29. I feel Mr. Irwin was a wonderful human being and Mr. Cousteau's negative comments are without merit...Mr. Irwin was simply swimming with the stingray that killed him in an unprovoked, bizarre way; unfortunately, this must have been Mr. Irwin's predetermined destiny...Mr. Irwin was a kind hearted man who always seemed happy to be living in the moment, with a tremendous love for his family/friends/animals; this is a successful, well lived life by any standards...I think everyone would be lucky to have Mr. Irwin's passion and enthusiasm and love of life--I KNOW everyone was very lucky to have shared even a small part of his life through his worthwhile, meaningful work...Good luck to his family; remember, love is an energy in this world and REAL LOVE NEVER DIES.

30. I am clearly a person that has a passion for animals, and for those people who think Steve didn't have that passion, "I'm like HUH??'' But I guess if one doesn't have that same passion how could they relate. Here's an easy clue, someone doesn't name their child after their beloved animals unless they are truly passionate about them. For people who think it was for show one doesn't grow up the way he did and keep at it for "SHOW." Anyone who has taken has a lot of animals knows that in order to take care of them is very draining. I'm not talking about the couple dogs and cat households. Many of our wildlife rehab. get burned out after just a few years. Steve Irwin worked hard to get where he was today and it wasn't by neglecting and not caring about these animals.
Interesting are all the remarks against Steve. What I've noticed in life especially when it comes to the animal world are the complainers are just that. When my parents were in charge of the SPCA in a small town, I noticed that the people on the board who complained how the money was spent didn't even own pets. Whereas, our household was full of the unwanted and neglected animals that we paid out of our own pockets. My parents would work all day trying to raise money in food booths for the organization, while these people would do nothing but complain. SOUND FAMILIAR???
The other night I talked to some kids who put their 2 cents in about how Steve "has been taunting animals for years and was invading these animals natural space." Then in the next breath they talked about going out hunting, one even participated in a shark killing event in this area. You know one of those killing events of he who kills the biggest shark wins. Ironic isn't, complaining of Steve Irwin bothering nature while they are killing it.
Now for all those who have the nerve to bad mouth Steve , "What the hell have YOU done to protect our Wildlife?" You must all be wildlife rehabilitators and contribute to it's worthy cause. We know what Steve did, at least those who followed his plight.
As for Jean Michael and his cowardly remarks, jealousy speaks for itself!! Pity you people can't see that. There are those people that "DO" and those that sit back, bad mouth and "watch." The watchers as always do nothing but complain and bad mouth what other people try to accomplish.
As for gary basoukas one can tell you are clueless about wild animals, my guess is animal behavior in general. "Let's hope nothing tragic may come your way because you may get your, "JUST DESSERTS". Too bad you won't be missed!!!
As for Steve Irwin the animal kingdom has lost their "KING." Just for those who don't know, MOST wild animals view humans as a threat and will react as if their lives are being threatened, and rightly so!! ;-)
