Celebrity Feuds
Cousteau Family Clash Over Croc Hunter

A very public clash of opinions has broken out between Jean-Michel Cousteau and his nephew Philippe over the late naturalist Steve Irwin -- and it's just the latest face-off in the continuing conflict amongst the scions of the life aquatic's first family.

One source who knows the family tells TMZ that Jean-Michel's remarks yesterday, when he slammed the beloved Irwin for his "very misleading" methods on the same day of his public memorial service, may have been an attempt on the part of Jean-Michel to steal PR thunder from his nephew and is not out of character for Jean-Michel. (Philippe was Irwin's partner on the fateful sea voyage that cost him his life.) Other sources say that the seemingly insensitive remarks are the result of "cultural differences" and that Jean-Michel may not have realized how inflammatory his words might be.

Jean-Michel, who is the eldest son of sea-explorer legend Jacques Cousteau, told reporters that he thought Irwin, in his "Crocodile Hunter" shows and beyond, would "interfere with nature, jump on animals, grab them...It appeals to a lot of people, but I think it's very misleading. You don't touch nature, you just look at it. And that's why I'm still alive." (Jean-Michel also said that he found the death "unfortunate" and said he had "a lot of respect" for Irwin.)

But not a fortnight ago, Philippe paid sincere homage to his producing partner and friend on "Larry King Live," saying he was amazed at "how dedicated Steve was and how much he really loved being out there...and also how much the people around him cared for him." Reps for Jean-Michel, Philippe, the Irwin family, and Discovery Channel did not comment on the spat, but this latest disagreement certainly isn't the first time various factions in the Cousteau family have sparred.

In 2001, Francine Cousteau, Jacques' second (and much younger) wife, took legal action to block Philippe, his sister Alexandra, and his mother Jan from using the name Cousteau Foundation, which was named after Philippe's father, also named Philippe, because it might confuse people who thought it was the Cousteau Society, which she administered. (The elder Philippe died in a seaplane crash in 1979.)

Philippe's relationship with his grandfather wasn't exactly the stuff of Hallmark cards, either. He told a scuba diving publication in 2003 that he saw Jacques, who died in 1997, only a few times a year, and added, "Unfortunately, he was not really a father figure to me." Jean-Michel, for his part, battled with his own father over a resort in Fiji that bore the Cousteau name; Jacques spent his later years trying to prevent his son from exploiting the Cousteau name for tourist profit.

31. Moranic comments are expected from those who saw no value in Steve Irwins quest to bring attention to Conservation and wildlife. He did it in an entertaining and friendly enviroment. I agree with comment #11, the very disrespectful and rude remarks only show the intelligence level of Jean Michel. Everyone has their own individual method of bringing attention to a situation or a cause. Sad, that Jean Michel found his need at a time of such grief to so many. Many people loved and respected Mr Irwin and his work will florish through his Conservation charity, WILDLIFE WARRIORS. My heart goes out to his wife and children.

32. One more thing for those who thought Steve deserved what he got. There's a war we are fighting in Iraq. My bet is, you don't that. Go make yourself USEFUL!!!!!

33. HEY POSTER 23.......IF YOU ARE THE REAL Jean-Michel Cousteau THEN YOU NEED TO WAKE UP FROM YOUR DREAMS AND LISTEN TO THE WORLD.
Like I said before, You are a nobody and just because your brother and his son are well known and liked, you believe the same goes for you....well let me tell you something, By saying the things you have been saying about Steve Irwin and your Nephew Philippe you really deserve to be slapped.
Steve Irwin was 100 percent more of a man than you, 100 percent of a humanitariun than you, 100 percent more of a family man, 100 percent more of a animal lover than you and he has done 100 percent more of saving the animals than you could ever do in your long life.
I would not be surprised if it were people you knew killing the stingrays.....everyone that knew of Steve or even heard of him would know that even if it was one of his crocs that killed him, he would never want people to take it out on the animal that killed him. Everyone who knew him, knew that so who do you think was taking the life of these stingrays?
Not people that Steve touched....but his enemies, and people like you who cannot see past their own need for infamy to see that the world lost a great condervationalist and even in his time of death, his family made sure that any money contributed to his memory go to the Wildlife Warriors to save even more animals even after Steve was gone.
You could never do something like that for you would have chosen the state funeral offered by AU because there is only one thing you care about....yourself.
Grow up. Steve had 100 percent more of a heart than you could ever have.

34. I think # 11 SAID IT ALL.
ESPECIALLY ...
The Rude French...
loud mouthed insensitive Pig that he is, a Cry baby with little to show from riding on his father's coat tails..
...and
he's been bitching and moaning all his life...
God. Give it a REST.,,
and , to # 4
You are NOT truthfull, ... your a loud mouthed, bitter, name calling Frenchy., which seems to be pretty typical here.
Let Steve Irwin's name and work stand on it's own.,, because, IT WILL.

35. Ignorance is abundant here, it seems. These nincompoops who are claiming that Mr. Irwin "got what he deserved" (in reference to his death), or that he was taunting the stingray that killed him, obviously aren't basing their statements on facts. Numerous articles recounting the events of that sad day have said that he was merely swimming above the fish. It whipped its tail in his direction as a reflexive response to being startled, and NOT because it was being interfered with in any way.

But then, I wouldn't expect accuracy from people whose spelling and grammar are so atrocious.

With regard to Mr. Cousteau's snooty little proclamations, I can't help but think that jealousy is the driving force behind them. As a child, I loved Jacques Cousteau. Jean Michel Cousteau, on the other hand... Who the hell is he??

Mr. Cousteau, get over it. Steve Irwin was, is, and will be a much-loved icon in the world of nature lovers and you're, well, no one of consequence. Au revoir!

36. Isn't it odd that Costeau chose to jump on the "bash the Crocodile Hunter" now that he is gone and he can hurt the very people that meant the most to Steve - namely his wife, children and friends! Seems to me that he is the one who wants to "self-promote"! Steve is gone, but his lasting legacy is and will be his obvious love for his family, friends and the animal kingdon. Let us get off this bashing and do what is right - show respect to his family by keeping our BIG MOUTHS SHUT AND OUR HANDS OFF THE KEYBOARD! Like #12 said "if you cannot say anything nice, don't say anything at all". I remember in years past that even if one disagreed with someone or even disliked him, we showed up for his funeral with our respects in hand and our mouths closed out of respect for the family.
To Terri, Bindi, and Bob, my heartfelt sympathy!

39. I absolutely adored Steve Irwin, as did my husband, kids and even my parents. There's no sense in talking trash about him when he did more to teach us about wildlife than Cousteau ver did. Animal Planet and Dicovery gave us the greats, Irwin, Jeff Corwin, O'Shea, but yet nobody spoke out about Steve's actions until he died tragically (except PETA, and they care more about donations and buying their magazines more than anything else), and for what? So they could make themselves look like the good-guys. I never learned anything from watching lions from a half a mile away.

40. OK people, enough is enough about Steve Irwin. Maybe there was some challenging questions on how he contacted animals in wild, but many shows he tells of how to respect wildlife and not to disturb. It's funny, we never talk about developers who are constantly building everyday and on all types of land that endanger our wildlife, or how as humans what we do and how we treat this earth. So unless you don't contribute in anyway to the hazards that exist on our land, i.e. litter, drive, work at a factory, smoke, or even yourself abuse animals, we shouldn't be judging someone who tried and did a great thing for nature.

41. It is tragic that Steve has passed and his family is dealing with this great loss. He was a good teacher for the children, but I agree with the other gentlemen's comments. You can teach without having to subject yourself to such extreme actions. Remember, he took his new born infant with him when he went to feed a hungry crock....he put his 2 mth old infant on the ground in a walking motion next to a crock when it was hungry......I will never forget that. That was show, that was ratings and all it would take would be 3 seconds for that crock to snatch that infant up. What would STeve say then, ooops...
He was very aware of what he was doing, he knew the dangers, he choose to pursue this and now, sadly, his family is grieving his loss. I like his shows, I know my son did and he will be missed. But, I do agree with the other gentlemen.

42. 4. Jean-Michel was 100% correct. Irwin was a fake, phony, and a fraud. How stupid the Americans are, not to see this

WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH YOU FRENCH ASS HOLES?
THIS VIVA LA FRANCE AND THE COURAGOUS TRUTHFUL FRENCHMAN

WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SO INSULTIVE WITH ANYONE'S HERITAGE?? YOU FORET THAT STEVE IRWIN WAS NOT AMERICAN, HE WAS AUSTRAILIAN, NOT THAT IT HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH HIS TRADGIC AND SUDDEN DEATH.
HE DID NOT PROMOTE ANYTHING HE DID OR SHARED WITH ANY ANIMAL OR REPTILE. HE DID IT OUT OF THE LOVE AND PASSION HE HAD WITHIN HIMSELF SINCE HE WAS BORN!
SO YOU FRENCH PEOPLE WHO WANT TO BASH THE INNOCENT AND YET HAVE NO FACT OR REASON FOR IT, SHOWS WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE OR EVEN HERITAGE YOU HAVE WITHIN YOURSELVES TO NOT RESPECT A LIFE THAT HAS BEEN SO TRADGICALLY TAKEN AWAY.
NOT TO FORGET THAT IT WAS GOD'S CALL TO MAKE AND NOT YOURS OR ANYONE ELSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

43. I shall miss Steve Irwin and his shows. He was an amazing man who love his family and all animals. The poise in his daughter's eulogy to her daddy was amazing for a nine year old and shows how well she was trained by her daddy. I hope that Bindi Sue Irwin will follow in her daddy's footsteps. I believe she will make a good spokeswoman for the animals as her daddy did. I hope she will still do her children's show that her daddy was producing for her and keep up his good work and share it with the world. No matter Steve Irwan was a good man and very personalble and he made you feel you were a part of his animal world. I certainly enjoyed watching him. As for Jean Michel's comments I never cared for him his father was the real personality on his sea ventures and I think his father would have chastised him for what he said. I hope that Phillipe Cousteau will continue working with the Irwin family and their company on making many more animal shows for the world to see. G'day mate we shall miss your wonderful smile and enthusiasm. God Bless.

44. MY OTHER OPINION GOES TO THIS JEAN COUSTEAUS

WHO IN THE HELL ARE YOU ANYWAY
JUST ANOTHER INSULTIVE FRENCHMAN WHO IS OBVIOUSLY JEALOUS THAT STEVE MADE IT ALOT FURTHER THAN HE DID.
YOU WILL DIE ONE DAY YOU OLD FART. NO NEED TO WORRY ABOUT THAT.
WE ARE NOT THE ONE WHO MAKES THAT CALL (duh)

I DON'T SEE JEFF CORWIN OR JACK HANNAH BASHING HIM AT THEIR OWN EXPENSE.
YOU MUST BE DESPARATE FOR A 2 MINUTE PEICE OF T.V. TIME TO BE CRITICAL WHEN YOU SHOULD RESPECT ONE WHO HAS PASSED AWAY.

45. Steve Irwin dedicated his life to all wildlife even the not so cute wildlife. He will be sadly missed. I can't believe Jean-Micheal had said something so harsh. If he wanted to make a point he could of but not now possibly in the near future. He could have shown the Irwin family and friends some respect. I think what Jean-Micheal was wrong what he said but that is my opinion. God bless Steve Irwin's family and friends.
