Cousteau Family Clash Over Croc Hunter

A very public clash of opinions has broken out between Jean-Michel Cousteau and his nephew Philippe over the late naturalist Steve Irwin -- and it's just the latest face-off in the continuing conflict amongst the scions of the life aquatic's first family.

One source who knows the family tells TMZ that Jean-Michel's remarks yesterday, when he slammed the beloved Irwin for his "very misleading" methods on the same day of his public memorial service, may have been an attempt on the part of Jean-Michel to steal PR thunder from his nephew and is not out of character for Jean-Michel. (Philippe was Irwin's partner on the fateful sea voyage that cost him his life.) Other sources say that the seemingly insensitive remarks are the result of "cultural differences" and that Jean-Michel may not have realized how inflammatory his words might be.

Jean-Michel, who is the eldest son of sea-explorer legend Jacques Cousteau, told reporters that he thought Irwin, in his "Crocodile Hunter" shows and beyond, would "interfere with nature, jump on animals, grab them...It appeals to a lot of people, but I think it's very misleading. You don't touch nature, you just look at it. And that's why I'm still alive." (Jean-Michel also said that he found the death "unfortunate" and said he had "a lot of respect" for Irwin.)

But not a fortnight ago, Philippe paid sincere homage to his producing partner and friend on "Larry King Live," saying he was amazed at "how dedicated Steve was and how much he really loved being out there...and also how much the people around him cared for him." Reps for Jean-Michel, Philippe, the Irwin family, and Discovery Channel did not comment on the spat, but this latest disagreement certainly isn't the first time various factions in the Cousteau family have sparred.

In 2001, Francine Cousteau, Jacques' second (and much younger) wife, took legal action to block Philippe, his sister Alexandra, and his mother Jan from using the name Cousteau Foundation, which was named after Philippe's father, also named Philippe, because it might confuse people who thought it was the Cousteau Society, which she administered. (The elder Philippe died in a seaplane crash in 1979.)

Philippe's relationship with his grandfather wasn't exactly the stuff of Hallmark cards, either. He told a scuba diving publication in 2003 that he saw Jacques, who died in 1997, only a few times a year, and added, "Unfortunately, he was not really a father figure to me." Jean-Michel, for his part, battled with his own father over a resort in Fiji that bore the Cousteau name; Jacques spent his later years trying to prevent his son from exploiting the Cousteau name for tourist profit.

46. Those who have negative comments about Steve Irwin clearly never watched his show or paid attention. He was an educator to those who misunderstood the beasts. He didn't merely dangle chickens to taunt them he was making them lunge and hunt for their food which is in their natural behavior. This was in one episode where his wife narrated.

47. Check a site of youtube.com for "Jean-Michel Cousteau " and you will find an interesting vdeo of him "Riding" a great white...

"You don't touch nature, you just look at it"
The man is a hyprocrite.

I didn't take Steve too serious when I first saw his show, but realized after seeing an interview, he was for REAL, and his "antics" had a purpose FOR the animals not self promotion.

Jean-Michel Cousteau's comments WERE self promotion, the riding of sea life IS for ratings, and the man has now ethics.

48. Steve Irwin imo was like that show Jackass except with all animals. He just used the animals so he had a show and career. He might have thought he cared about animals, but you don't man handle and scare them the way he did if you do sincerely like animals. He was obnoxious. And everyone was pretty damn pissed at him not to long ago when he practically fed his baby to a gator. No one seems to remember that stupid trick of his. Now everyone seems to love him. He died because of his own mistakes. Not because of being careful that's for sure.

50. Why does everything have to come down to who is from where, American, french etc. not everyone in america has the same view point and not everyone in france does etc.. All you are doing when you say things like "stupid american" "stupid french" etc is trying to get people angry and generalizing..

Now I agree with cousteau said, Irwin did use animals as props, he had a habit of provoking them.. he sholdn't of died, and he seemed like a really nice man, but I think he sometimes went too far.
I was brought up watching Jacques Cousteau, loved him, he showed nature how it was without animals being poked at, jumped on, annoyed.. he showed by filming them in their natural state.

My other statement is people need to stop being so touchy about what others say.. people are allowed to their own opinion without being jumped on about it. It would be different if he came right out and said I am glad he is dead, but he didn't he was just making a point. people now adays are too politically correct..

51.
Jean Michel needs to realize that the difference in their styles was that he is an observer and Irwin was a zookeeper and wildlife rehabilitator. You do not get to do the job Steve was doing unless you are willing to get real close to the animal. You take precautions of course, but you have to get real close and grab it. Jean Michel iss an observer, who tries to be as unobtrusive as possible to observe the natural world. Both approacehes have their uses, based on what you want to do.

Also, it is sad, but most of the work of people like Jean Michel tends to be shown on educational TV, you know, the channel of thigs that "are good for you". Irwin got watched by thousands of kids who did not realize that they were being fed wholesome stuff because it tasted so great....

52. All you french assholes are the same, how dare you disrespect Steve , your just jealous it wasn;t you that made it big with this show. He was a fine man, father son and freind.

53. I believe that all this Steve Bashing is because there are people out there who are jealous of who Steve was and how much he accomplished in his short life.
Nobody has been able to save the number of wildlife Steve did, and even though he has passed on from this life, he still touches our lives everyday with the species that are coming back from near extinction.
The group he put together Wildlife Warriors has collected millions of dollars to help save these creatures which would soon be gone from our planet had it not been for Steve.
Sure, he was a bit rowdy but that is the way he got peoples attention.
I feel so sorry for anyone who does not realize how much of his life he gave up to save our planet. He did change our world and I hope that Terry and Bindi and Bob go on and follow in their beloved father/husbands footsteps.
Terry lost her soulmate, Bindi and Bob lost their father who loved them as much as any human being could ever love. These are the people you hurt when you say the horrible things about Steve.
I hope Philippe shows the family that he is not going to be like them and keeps going in the direction that Steve was taking him in. And for all of you posters saying those horrible things about a man who is dead are only doing so because of your own low self esteem and you all need to work on that in order to become even 1/4th of the man, the husband the father and the saver of wildlife that he was.

54. Steve Irwin is dead. He cant even defend himself. Making negative comments about someone after they've died is pretty pathetic.

55. My post was in defense of Steve and had pretty atrocious spelling :p

That aside, I grew up watching Jaques Cuosteau, and his son was showing to be a new breed of Coustea (early Iwrin) but died before his time. Since then, the family has been more involved in fighting for status more than any real contribution of the Father or eldest, both now gone from us and as sadly as Steve.

Anyone who brings us to pay attention to the world around us and the nature we live with in our present culture is a hero, Steve is a pioneer who found a way to get our attention in all this "white noise" of real lives we live in today.

Bless him and his family.

PS: Jean is still a Hypocrite!

56. Scew all of you Irwin bashers out there. The man was the best friend the animals could have. He was an asset to the human race. A wonderful husband, father and friend. His death was a tragedy and he will be sorely missed. Too bad there aren't millions more like him.

58. KOOOOOOOODO'S TO COMMENT #48 AND #49
That is and always will be my thoughts exactly!!
God Bless Steve and His family and may he rest in peace forever as he deserves so!

59. There's really no excuse for this guy's comments. First of all, I'd like to see his ass wrestle an alligator. Irwin was in the conversation industry, he would tackle the crocodiles to capture them and remove them from property so they could be saved and not hurt anyone. Other than that, he was very tender and gentle in his handling of animals. This guy has no right to try to bash Irwin when he's passed away and be insensitive to the mourning of his family, friends, and the world, and on top of that to go on about how he's been in his profession and has been living a lot longer than Irwin. What a jerk!

60. Did everyone see his memorial on pet planet this week? It was a nice tribute and Bindi was great when she spoke of her dad her hero.
It was so sad to say Goodbye to Steve. Although I never met him, he touched my life in a way that no one else ever could. When I first watched him I thought he was really odd but after seeing just how much he loved the animals and wanted everyone to love them too, I began to understand why he did what he did,

Terry is so so so sad. I truely believe she lost her soulmate and I don't think you ever get over that. I hope she finds comfort in all the people that loved Steve and that she will not hear any of this bashing about her husband.....I see and hear it everywhere and am so tired of it.
I believe that people are just jealous of Steve and I hope she realizes that those people who are saying all these horrible things about Steve are complete morons.

Bye Steve, and Thanks for all you did and all you continue to do through your legacy.
