Oprah Gets Lucky

9/20/2006 9:22 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Oprah WinfreyOprah Winfrey believes the world revolves around Oprah, but not in Montecito, Calif., where 12 -- count 'em -- 12 billionaires reside. As one plugged-in resident tells TMZ, "Oprah's nobody special: There are lots of insanely rich and famous people here." But then again, maybe not: At least one swanky steak house -- Lucky's in Montecito -- thinks Oprah is a big, big deal. When Oprah gets a hankering for a little sumthin'-sumthin' after hours, the steak house staff jumps into action.

Recently, sometime after the kitchen closed officially at 10:30PM, Ms. Winfrey paid a surprise visit to the steakhouse and the normally eager-to-leave kitchen crew was more than willing to fire up the grill just for the Queen of Talk. Who knew that "O" stood for "Open any time"? Perhaps Lucky's learned a lesson from the Hermés playbook -- never tell Oprah you're closed.

Angelina JolieAngelina Buys $400,000 Worth of Bizarre Art – With a Bullet

This ought to brighten up the view in Shiloh's nursery: Angelina Jolie bought hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of art at a recent LA show by British artist-provocateur Banksy at a downtown LA warehouse, including a $226,000 painting that shows starving African children looking on as a white family eats a picnic lunch under an umbrella.

According to Star magazine, Angie especially liked a white bust with a bleeding bullet hole in the forehead which went for, oh, $75,000. And then there was the portrait of a man hit in the head with a custard pie – that one went for another $75,000. Angelina restrained herself however, from buying the show's centerpiece, a life-sized red and gold elephant.

Whitney HoustonDippy Divas Unite: Whitney Mentored By Courtney

If there's one songstress out there who might be an even bigger train wreck than Whitney Houston has been in recent years, it's Courtney Love. And yet, according to reports, legendary music producer Clive Davis enlisted the famously unstable Love's services to help Houston, who is on her way to divorcing pop star hubby Bobby Brown, kick her drug problems.

After getting the call from Davis, Love jumped at the chance to be a steadying influence on Whitney, according to Us Weekly (via IMDb), and now the two are getting along famously. Love has introduced Whitney to her own addiction counselor Warren Boyd, and Davis is paying for the expensive sessions.

Davis, meanwhile, is getting the newly-healthy Whitney back onto the singing treadmill, and would love if she made her big comeback by the Grammys early next year. If all goes as planned, says Page Six, Whitney could have a new album out by 2007: "We are going to make a great album. She is talking enthusiastically and is articulate. In opinion, the best singers in the world are Aretha [Franklin] and Whitney."

Jean-Michel CousteauCousteau Blasts Irwin -- "Don't Mess With Nature"

Jean-Michel Cousteau wagged a big Gallic finger at the late Steve Irwin Tuesday, saying that if the beloved Crocodile Hunter hadn't interfered with nature by jumping on and grabbing animals, he'd still be alive.

Promoting his own two-part TV special, Cousteau said that while he mourns the death of Irwin, whose funeral was held in Queensland yesterday, and called it "very, very unfortunate," it was Irwin's gonzo approach to nature television that cost him his life. "It sells, it appeals to a lot of people, but I think it's very misleading. You don't touch nature, you just look at it. And that's why I'm still alive. I've been diving over 61 years – a lot many more years than he's been alive – and I don't mess with nature."

After being hounded by them for years, Tori Spelling will get to play a gossip columnist in a guest role in the CW's "Smallville" this season, says TV Guide ... Jack Nicholson tells Rolling Stone magazine that he convinced director Martin Scorsese to let him improvise a sex scene in their new film "The Departed," bringing a certain strapped-on sex implement into a threesome with two women ... HBO has snapped up the rights to "P.E.," a hotly sought-after new comedy series from Will Ferrell's production company Gary Sanchez Productions. The series is about a former major leaguer who has to go back to his hometown to teach gym.

#5 When I heard what A bought for art, I thought how wonderful. It's all perspective and subjective, as art always is. When my family looks at art, we try to get into the picture. We ask questions to see where the persons head is.

I've bought art specifically to plant seeds in childrens heads. With her position as the human rights activist that she is, that art shows many things. Never forget the other countries, you can still appreciate what being "home" is like, You could be the next Goodwill Ambassador and do better things than I could think of.

She's buying memories of her childrens heritage and why she has them. She can't have them all, they were lucky and should get the vibe be grateful for all they have.

I am finding some of these comments on Angelina's spending hilarious. It sounds like there are a lot of jealous people out there! They do SO much for SO many causes. They DO put their money where their hearts are. If they choose to spend some of THEIR money on art, who are we to judge??

Geez I guess I thought this was America where people were allowed to spend there money(however stupidly) that they wanted. I wonder how much time/money SteveP or any of the other anti- Bradgelina posters give on a regular basis. I don't think that celebrities or anyone else with money is more responsible than anyone else to save the world. We all are to the extent of what we want to be.

I can't believe that you guys are shocked by Angelina's purchase. She DID steal someone else's husband. That tells me she has no morals and no character. She is very self-absorbed and now so is Brad. I feel sorry for the kids.

Angelina Jolie donates a full third of her income to charitable causes...post taxation, it's on the records. To chastise her for not donating MORE is ridiculous, mean spirited and petty. When YOU donate a third of your yearly income to helping others....then you can criticize someone else's purchases. Get a life and quit worrying what the Jolie-Pitts hang on their walls.

We loved Steve Irwin, and he will be missed, may he rest in peace. He lived life to the fullest.

Well, maybe a little tolerance all around is due for those cursed by fame and fate:

Why don't we all wish for a come-back and a crack pipe for Ms. Houston?
Why not be considerate of Cousteau's envy of his departed blue-collar colleague? Is there really an upper class way of playing with fish? That hardly sounds democratic.
Why not applaud Ms. Jolie's eccentric artistic taste and her personally psychotic method of abusively raising children of all races equally?

Really, who are we to judge...?

About the comment that Angelina Jolie "wasted" money on art......I'm an artist, and I have spent many years and much money developing my talent and skill. I have to eat too. Art is an important part of being a well-rounded person, and while I probably wouldn't hang Angie's choice of art in my house, it's her right to buy it and see what she wants in it. It's also the right of the artist to create and produce according to what they see and feel. It may be ugly or gross to you, but if it appeals to the buyer, then the artist has communicated his/her message.

Mr Irwin made many fans and a lot of money "playing" with animals. Anyone who has seen video of him taunting crocodiles at the edge of the water with a joint of meat and then dashing madly away from the snapping jaws, knows that he was primarily an entertainer and not a naturalist. Cousteau (father and son or grandson) is a name associated with careful, scientific regard for the animal being studied and its environment. Jacques Cousteau and his team often approached fish and marine mammals, but always caustiously. He knew better than to approach a stingray from above and behind, the perfect position from which the ray, defensively, implants its barb. What a shame that a much loved guy is dead in such an avoidable incident that has subsequently led to "loonies" taking their revenge by killing a number of stingrays off the Australian coast. Mr Irwin, I think, would have been horrified by this reaction to his death.

In reference to Steve Irwin and Cousteau we are made up of all kinds of people and I have been reading some of the comments being made. I think we all lost
site in our anger that what Steve stood for most of all was freedom. Freedom for the animals and freedom for people. Mr. Cousteau has the right to speak his mind
and I guess if we looked at it. Steve would of spoke his mind back. Lets not embelish one persons behavior and continue to make the losing of Steve about what Cousteau had to say but about Steve. We don't have to let Cousteau the topic of conversation. He obviously isnt worth it

It's nothing less then rudeness that someone would even think their needs are more important then others. How dare Oprah feel she is entitled to keep people after the time they are suppose to get off work, to feed her enormous ego. Doesn't she realize, even though they're not worth billions of dollars, normal people have lives to lead, plans to fill, families to return too? Does she feel others lives just not as important as her's? Is a steak that important to Oprah, that she will make people stop their lives to accommedate her self absorbed needs to show off her self importance? And to the people that think she deserves to treat people like that? Shame on you.
You want a steak Oprah? cook it yourself.

i too agree that $400,000.00 is a lot of money to spend on art!!! this is a tragedy when this country is in disarray when it comes to helping to uplift another community like New Orleans. Or how about the just the common good of the human race!! It saddens me to think of how many people in this world have, who can really make a difference and don't vs the few whom don't have a whole lot and try to give that and more. when are we going to figure out that the true strength is really in unity. We are the "United" States of America !!!

I'm with Jean-Michel Cousteau, Steve was entertaining, but it was a bit self-serving and disruptive to animals in their natural habitats, I always felt children would get the wrong idea in watching him, and not learn to respect nature merely as an observer. I liked the guy but he was more about the celebrity and money making aspects all in all, a friend of mines four-year old daughter picked up a copper head snake 2 summers ago while they were on a camping trip and she brought it over to her mom, they all gasped and yelled and the little girl's excuse was "they won't hurt you, I saw the crocodile hunter pet one on TV." All that aside, he knew the dangers and in the end his should be a cautionary tale, as the "Ocean's Most Deadly" proved to be just that, accident yes but he was a freak accident waiting to happen and we all knew it, he wasn't brave, he was just very foolish, period!

Mike Jackson showed his infant to an adoring crowd over the rail of a balcony, and was villified. Steve Irwin exposed his infant to the jaws of a hungary man-eater yet was called a professional who knew what he was doing. Because of his own self -serving, headline seeking antics, of which probably only 5% had anything to do with animial conservation, this brave soul is no longer here for his family. What a sad ending in the quest for fame and wealth.
