Remembering the Crocodile Hunter

More than 5,000 people gathered at the Australia Zoo's "Crocoseum" Wednesday to celebrate the memory of the late Steve Irwin. There was only one empty seat in the stadium - one set aside for Irwin himself, between his widow Terri and father Robert.

The emotional tribute was peppered with bloopers and outtakes from Irwin's show, "The Crocodile Hunter," as well as speeches and video tributes from family, friends and celebrities like Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake.

The Australian-born Crowe opened the memorial with a taped introduction from New York saying, "We've all lost a friend, lost a champion and we're gonna take some time to adjust to that ... I'm in New York mate, the big city and you were headline news on CNN for a week, there's not many zookeepers that would command that sort of attention mate ...You were heard and you will be remembered."

Irwin, 44, died on September 4 when a stingray barb pierced his chest during filming for a TV show, leaving behind his wife and two children, Bindi 8, and Bob, 2. In one of the more moving moments, 8-year-old Bindi read a short speech about her father saying, "I had the best Daddy in the whole world and I will miss him every day. Whenever I see a crocodile I will always think of him ... Daddy made this place his whole life. Now it's our turn to help Daddy, thank you."

17. I was at the service, you could feel Steve's spirit in the place...people were not only crying beside me but smiling as well as we remembered him in the way he wanted...with much laughter and fun. When Bindi came out it shocked us all, what strength this little girl has. Steve would be so proud of her, she is definately on the way to fulfilling his dream.......

18. Sorry to tell you "eli" but its true Steve Irwin died as the result of a freak accident because he was catering to the appetites of people like you who wanted to see his act. Now that he is dead, animals are being made to pay the price for being "wild" animals. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad. Cry your big crocodile tears but didn't Steve Irwin pass himself off as a champion of wild life, and now wild life is having to suffer because of it. Ah, life in a land down under.

19. Bindi is my new heroine. She's braver at 8 years old than I was at 36 when my own father passed away. Terri and Steve did a wonderful job with that little girl and I have no doubt that she will continue to amaze all of us in the years too come.

21. To Mr. Cousteau,
I realize that it is hard to live up to that name but using a forum like this to belittle what Steve Irwin did for animals throughout the world including his home in Australia is tragic. I do agree that idiots thinking they are doing his name justice by killing the creatures he tried to protect is wrong, but so is your attempt to gain your own publicity in the wake of his death. I have seen you several times in interviews since his death making a case for the way he treated animals as damaging but how can you not see the impact of someone who showed so much heart and excitement reflecting on kids around the world. The true legacy he leaves is the children will remember the animals and hopefully show the same apprieciation for the creatures of the world that he put out there regardless of a camera rolling. Knowledge is power and the more we can give to the youth of the world the better chance of there being a world left. You may have not liked the way he sent his message but you should honor the effort to bring it forward. I love wildlife even back to the days of the calipso and still am facinated by the creatures of this world and while I am sad for the stingrays that had to die out of stupidity I celebrate the animals that might live due to the knowledge that was shared. To the Irwin family my prayers, my love, and my thanks go out to you. Thank you for sharing your lives with us all. Steve you will be missed!

22. When I was watching the memorial I realized that myself and most of the world is not ready to let go of Steve Irwin. He is a true Legend of our times and I can't think of anyone else like him. He made a definate mark in this world and he truly lived life to the fullest and let his whole self shine to the world which is very hard for ourselfs to do in private. He will be missed. His daughter is a true delight and she will go so far in this world with conservation I am just sad that her Dad won't be there with her.

24. Mr. "Cousteau"--who do you think you are fooling?? How dare you use the REAL Jean-Michel Cousteau's name?? Jean-Michel loved Steve, as all who mourn him do. He is finishing the documentary that Steve began. He had tears in his eyes the day that Steve passed. I just received a thank you letter from Wildlife Warriors, the charity that Steve loved, who honored Steve, and whom Jean-Michel contributed generously to. Why don't you do a little homework before you open your lying mouth again!!
