Dr. Phil's Pills Cost Him Millions -- Settles Suit

Dr. Phil McGrawPop head-shrinker Dr. Phil McGraw will be shelling out to a group of angry dieters. According to lawyers involved in the case yesterday cited by City News Service, Dr. Phil has agreed to pay $10.8 million to settle a class action lawsuit filed by people who didn't like his Shape Up! diet products.

The products, which include supplements and such meal replacements as bars, shakes, and ready-to-drink mixes, are no longer being sold, and the people who bought them accused the defendants, including Dr. Phil, of making false claims about their efficacy. McGraw's name and image appeared on the products. To palliate the plaintiffs, Dr. Phil and his fellow defendants will be setting up a fund in which the plaintiffs can choose between Nutrilite vitamins or a whopping $12.50 in cash. Of course, in the end, Dr. Phil won't end up paying a cent of his own money, as his insurance will cover whatever he has to pay.

Mel Raises The Bar

Mel Gibson might be on the road to sobriety, but we're not sure that hanging out in bars is one of the 12 steps. The actor-director was spotted in an Austin, Tex. bar Friday night hanging out until 2:30 a.m., but, according to a witness, he was "only drinking water" and not, as was the case that fateful night in Malibu, flirting with women. Indeed, Mad Mel was in Texas making the rounds for his upcoming Mayan epic, when a Page Six witness caught him at a local joint called the Side Bar, playing pool. Even his rep acknowledged that the description was apt: "Sounds like Mel."

Meanwhile, the kerfuffle over Mel's remarks at a press conference down in Austin where he compared Mayan culture just before its collapse and America today is just scraping the surface of what he actually said, according to MSNBC. "I just wanna draw the parallels," said Gibson. "I just looked at it, and thought, we display that stuff here. I don't wanna be a doomsayer, but the Mayan calendar ends in 2012. So have fun!"

Bobby: "I'd Like A Car. The Whole Car."

Bobby Brown must not think he's going to get very much from Whitney Houston after their divorce: He's asking reality-show producers for a set of wheels as a form of payment.

The former R&B star was invited to appear on the TV One reality series "I Married A Baller," which chronicles the marriages of sports figures. But the executive producer of the show got a little confused when Bobby made one particular demand. "When he asked for a car, we actually thought he meant for us to book him car service," says Datari Turner in Lloyd Grove's column. "But then I was told that he actually wanted us to buy him a car!"

Of course, for the kind of money that constitutes a standard booking fee, Brown would've gotten a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder or something similarly downmarket, so Brown passed on doing the show. Brown's lawyer and rep says Bobby was just joking about the whole thing.

Clooney: If Ahhnuld Can Do It...

The politically-active George Clooney might not be running for office anytime soon, but he's certainly protesting a bit much in saying that he won't. He shrugged off suggestions from fans that he try for the presidency in 2008, saying, "Believe me, you don't want me in politics," and so on and so forth. Still, appearing at an event at which California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill to help stop genocidal violence in the Darfur region of Sudan, he compared what's happened to him and the Governator since their unfortunate turns in "Batman and Robin": "He's gone on to be governor, and I still think I'm Batman."

Party Favors: Bosworth Thinks Tobacco is Food Group, Project Runway Contestant Booted for Cheating?

Kate Bosworth was spotted by a Lloyd Grove spy at New York eatery Esperanto the other night, but, as befits her current anatomical condition, she wasn't eating -- just smoking cigarettes incessantly. "She was wearing very tight jeans, revealing the fact that her legs were the same size as her pinky," says a spy, who adds that she looked "miserable" ... A "Project Runway" contestant, Jeffrey Sebelia, the one with the throat tattoo, has been accused of violating rules about getting help with sewing, according to the New York Post. "We took the accusations very seriously," says "Runway's" Tim Gunn. This week's episode will tell the real tale, says a rep.

32. Dr. Phil really WAS into helping people when the show first started, and I really thought he was great, but he has been jaded by success and got himself into that trap of 'more money please'
Have any of you watched the "Dr Phil House" he has on Mondays? It can be creepy and downright scary! It's like he has become an evil monster and someone let him out of his cage!

33. Dr. Phil has finally got what he deserved for being a little more greedy than he let on. As for those here who have a problem with large people in this society- GET OVER IT! Fat people are not blaming anyone for being fat nor are they asking anyone to take responsibility for it either. There are people who are willing and have all on their own taken up the mantle of "helpers". They feel it's their "calling to help some people "get healthy", so there are options for those who want the help. There is nothing wrong with being fat. It is simply a different state of being , the same as being skinny. Listen, there is a lot of lying going on in the medical forum and the truth will come out one day real soon. The fact is that there will always be sick people in this world and being large or fat isn't and hasn't been the beginning of that nor will it be the end. There are very healthy large people out there and they are very active. Our society has benefitted from a lot of work being put in by people who happen to also be deemed "fat" and that meaning "different". Fat people are lawyers, doctors , nurses, cooks, police, teachers, writers, social workers, presidents of corporations, city leaders, blue collar workers, etc.,etc., etc. The only thing that many large people have ever asked for is a level of human decency and respect. Why is it so hard for so called "normal" people to understand that it's just as easy to be kind as it is to be cruel. LET'S STOP THE FAT BASHING AND WEIGHT DISCRIMINATION AND LET'S STRIVE TO BE THE PEOPLE WE CLAIM TO THE WORLD THAT WE ARE. IN A SOCIETY THAT CLAIMS TO RESPECT DIVERSITY AND TURN AROUND AND RIDICULE SOMEONE BECAUSE OF THEIR SIZE IS PURELY HYPOCRITICAL. OUR society has expanded in population and with that are people who share common traits , that 's not unusual, that's the way it has always been. So there will be people who are going to be sick whether they are large or small. Don't let money motivated manipulation blind you to the fact that Dr. Phil is not the only one in this world lying in order to make money off of other people's concerns or problems. There is a larger conspiracy at work and a lot of you here should be more insightful to recognize the running contradictions that exist. The contradictions that reveal the the truth. I 'll be around when the ball drops. Love yourselfs and love everyone else, small or large. Peace.

34. You always have such a nasty snide tone about most people here on your site. There's reporting the news and then there is just being a pinched old angry wanna-be. I think the guy who is in charge of this site is just that. He can't be famous on his own merit, so he has to get his name in the news by bashing everyone else whom he obviously envys for their success. I agree on some of the people he bashes, but everyone?! Can't remember your main spokesmans name, but he just seems like a total arse !

36. Dr. Phil had some good advice - get control, get off your butt & move, push away from the table. But I am disappointed he pushed the pills and replacement foods. 37. Why is everyone pissed at DR. Phill for making money? Isn't that what everyone in the entertainment field works toward. CNN, ABC, NBS ,CBS, Fox and all the rest. No I don't watch his show anymore. Not since he tried to jump start his Lawyer son as his replacement. The young lawyer just didn't have his daddies personality so he isn't featured any more. With all that said, I still think he has a dam sweet looking wife. EEJ

38. Once again...a comments section filled with people wanting to forgive Mel for his remarks. Sure, I'm as willing as the next person to let a mistake go however this guy is a REPEAT offender. He's been caught drunk driving before and he's admited publically that he had done it many times "before he was sober." Why would you want to idolize a man like this? If it were anyone else with this sort of track record you'd all be on the MADD bandwagon shouting for his lynching. I feel like he's being forgiven just because he made racial remarks because everyone is forgetting what is really important. It's sad...you are all so easily led by the media.

39. I'm sick of Dr. Phil. He thinks he knows everything. I can't believe people just hang on his every word. Dr. Phil....you don't fool me!!! You are out for all you can get. You should be ashamed of yourself. I always say "what goes around comes around".

40. #29: You're a pathetic idiot. Did you crawl out from under the same rock as "Dr" Phil? He's full of sh*t, Oprah;'s full of sh*t, and you're full of sh*t for standing up for this garbage.

41. Dr Phil has been aware of obesity his whole life,
since he lived a family life of it, prior to starting his
family . He survived a every day diet of it, obesity
was in his family. That is nothing to be ashamed of.
Diebetics galore Nationally, Obesity running rampid
in America. It`s a way of life unfortuantely. But to
make tons of money, as he does, is also no sin.
but what irks the hell out of me, by offering this Diet
Plan of his, rather than zippering his mouth up, and
informing the public to do the same, and cut calories
carbs, intake of food, & excercise, which even poor
people, middle income, wealthy must do, or shud do,
as all people can try to do. They listen to him,
Doc. Phil , and all it`s about making him cautious
of his own weight control which his maternal, or
paternal family has fought all their lives perhaps.
ThiS ALL ABOUT HIM, ME, ME, LETS DO IT FOR ME
IT`S A INBORN governing method for him, to control
his weight but it makes big bucks for him, as he
governs his own weight, by controling America`s
thinking of of their own obesity losing their weight.
He has you all hypnotizedall of a weight problem
he has had all his life, or his being raised in a life of
obesity environment. Also his let me take my wife by
the hand after every show , to show affection to
America, and walk off in the sunset, is remarkable
for, any man , & wife. I applaud him, & her. However
the man is a real salesperson, he really is selling you
Mr. & Mrs America of his having it together. Well we
all would , or could put on a facade of syrup, & oozing
sugar for any crowd, that will pay the bucks. He
should be in the book of guiness records, for bull crap
Fed on a steady diet, to all who will listen. He is good
Bottom Line, DARN GOOD.

44. I think whether or not Dr. Phil is making a buck is besides the point. He's helped so many people and I hope he continues to do so. It's certainly more than some other people or other talk shows have done for people so cut the guy some slack!
