Apparently actress Hilary Swank watches every penny... like a hawk! The Oscar-winning leading lady was recently out shopping for CDs at Virgin Megastore in Los Angeles. Our source, who was in the store at the time, said Hilary was very excited when it came time to pay because she had a gift certificate for $100.

Luckily for Hil, she didn't have to shell out any of her own money since the total balance due was $99.58. After the cashier rung Swank's sale up he handed her back a gift certificate now worth 42¢. Hilary asked that she be given the actual coins rather than the card. The manager had to be called to open the register and Hilary proceeded to complain about the inconvenience this was causing her.

As much of a time constraint she says she was on, she seemed more than willing to wait for 42¢.

Guess every penny really does count!

1. i dont see this as bad news. i would not want a gift card for 42cents either. that is lame.anything under $1.00 should be given in cash.

6. How lame TMZ, just because she has money she shouldn’t be using gift certificates? Bull hoc-kin do! With most gift certificate anything under $5 is given back in cash. Good for her for sticking up for herself.

10. Normally they don't give back the change, and it's silly. I wouldn't want a card worth $0.42 either, but she shouldn't have been a snot about it. Im sure the clerk didn't want to have to call the manager for help...but she didn't need to make the clerk feel badly. It's not like she has an 8-5 where she's on a lunch hour.
