Teen Hero on "Today" Made it All Up

BAILEY, Colo. (AP) -- A teen lied on national television about trying to stay with six girls taken hostage in a high school classroom because he "wanted so much to help them," his mother said Thursday.

Duane Morrison, 53, took the girls hostage at Platte Canyon High School on Wednesday, sexually assaulted some of them and killed one before committing suicide, authorities said.

Cassidy Grigg, 16, had told NBC's "Today" show that he was in a classroom when the gunman tapped him on the shoulder and told him to leave. His father, Tom, gave a similar account of his son's story to The Associated Press.

The teen said on ABC's "Good Morning America" that he told the gunman he wanted to stay and that "he told me that if I didn't go then he would pretty much kill me."

Larina Grigg said her son told her he had made up the story." He said, 'Mom, all those kids were my friends and I just wanted so much to help them. ... I guess I just made it up in my mind. I just wanted it to be true so bad,"' Larina Grigg said. She did not say whether her son had witnessed anything at the school or had heard details elsewhere.

Larina Grigg said her son had never lied to his parents before and called it "a blow." "This is a 16-year-old young man, and I'm telling you, it's taken some real guts to do this. He wants to make this right. This is his call," she said.

"He wants to tell everybody he's sorry, he made a mistake," she said.

19. He was wrong but what a horrific situation. A nightmare for everyone involved. All sense of safety and security is now gone for these people. I hope the community heals and gives the kid a break.

22. What can you say? The teen lied...most do. You don't put a teenager under pressure on T.V. like that, esp. after something like this happened.

On the other hand, did not one suspect that he just wanted glory and fame?

Perhaps on the front page of TMZ?

I think he got just what he wanted. Don't you?

24. If you listened to him tell the story you could tell that it wasn't right. He said something like "he said he would pretty much kill me" . My son was carjacked 2 weekends ago with a gun pointed to his head while he was forced to drive across town, then told to get out of the car and empty his pockets. Having a gun pointed at you and the words that are said to you while that gun is there pointing at you... you aren't likely to forget the exact words that are said to you, shock or not. Unless you are a hard core criminal and this kid didn't appear to be. It's just sad that he used this tragedy to get on the news!

25. Man, most of you are so harsh. Please remember that he is a minor. Even our laws say that minors are not mature enough. He lied, yes. He is immature as well as just went through a very scary situation. Give this young man a break. He didn't look to me like he was wanting fame. You could see this in his words, pauses, and body posture. This boy is young and made a mistake. He also shows maturity to tell the truth after making a mistake. Many grown MEN & WOMEN can't even do that. How many of you can honestly say that you stand up and tell the truth after you told a flat out lie? Any hands raised??? I think not...at least not many of you. Adults: mature up in your comments. Children: learn from your mistakes so you will be a more mature adult in the future. This boy is on the right track by learning this important lesson at such a young age. Good for him! Now if some adults can learn this same moral teaching....this world would be a more honest place.

Lastly, lets stop focusing on this mistake and support this community. It's a very tragic thing that just happened.

27. Your point being?

Yes, he's immature...so why in the world is he on 'Today'?

You could look at him and tell he is lying.

So why let that pass?

Why don't 'Today' just advertise for all liars to come and tell a fake interview.

I say grow up and quit giving him credit for lying...quit sugar-coating it.

28. I don't care if the experience was traumatic for him. He was let go, he wasn't one of the six hostages. He wasn't sexually assaulted, and he didn't get hurt. That story he made up was a horrible lie and he should've been man enough in the first place to just tell the truth. I wouldn't be able to live over the embarrassment. Instead of feeling sorry for him, feel sorry for the people who were actually traumatized; or maybe even the poor child that lost her life. Feel pity on those who were assaulted and for their parents who were probably dying from worry.

Do not feel sorry for the wrongdoer. This country is so screwed up because people can't take responsibility for their actions. "It was really traumatic..." Sure, but for him, it only could've lasted so long. There was no gun on him when he made those lies.

Damn, people! Think about it.
