Teen Hero on "Today" Made it All Up

BAILEY, Colo. (AP) -- A teen lied on national television about trying to stay with six girls taken hostage in a high school classroom because he "wanted so much to help them," his mother said Thursday.

Duane Morrison, 53, took the girls hostage at Platte Canyon High School on Wednesday, sexually assaulted some of them and killed one before committing suicide, authorities said.

Cassidy Grigg, 16, had told NBC's "Today" show that he was in a classroom when the gunman tapped him on the shoulder and told him to leave. His father, Tom, gave a similar account of his son's story to The Associated Press.

The teen said on ABC's "Good Morning America" that he told the gunman he wanted to stay and that "he told me that if I didn't go then he would pretty much kill me."

Larina Grigg said her son told her he had made up the story." He said, 'Mom, all those kids were my friends and I just wanted so much to help them. ... I guess I just made it up in my mind. I just wanted it to be true so bad,"' Larina Grigg said. She did not say whether her son had witnessed anything at the school or had heard details elsewhere.

Larina Grigg said her son had never lied to his parents before and called it "a blow." "This is a 16-year-old young man, and I'm telling you, it's taken some real guts to do this. He wants to make this right. This is his call," she said.

"He wants to tell everybody he's sorry, he made a mistake," she said.

31. There was no reason for him to LIE other than attention!

He will have to live with this SHAME for the rest of his life.

32. This little white monkey lied! You act like he was six years old. You know right from wrong at that age. This is dispicable. Traumatized my azz. This little monkey's story started to fall apart really quickly. His parents and the police knew how bad the fallout would be once people discovered the truth.

He is nothing but a younger, way uglier version of Mel Gibson. People of that ilk are all liars! Eat bananas and swing from trees. Stop speaking.

33. #18....Poor sweet kid?

The kid is a little liar; an opportunitst. He saw an opportunity to try to make himself look like a hero and he took it. He should be shamed!

And all you have to say is, " Poor sweet kid"? What the hell is wrong with you?

34. Don't pity this kid.

The only reason he confessed is because he thought about it, and realized the truth would eventually come out. If there were others present, SOMEONE would have eventually exposed him.

35. He probably felt so helpless for those girls, and wanted in a small way to be heroic. His intense fear, helpessness, and anxiety probably drove him to lie in order to cope with this horrific shooting.

He is lucky that he has a close family that supports his vunerable actions during this tough time. His schoolmates and community should support his unfortunate lieing statement under the circumstances.

39. He wanted to be on tvand he wanted to present himself as a hero, plain and simple. He saw the opportunity in the face of this tragedy and pounced on it . He didn't think it through that the people that were really in that classroom would say " Hey, wait a minute, he wasn't with us". The only reason he came clean was he or someone conveyed it to him that it would come out he was lying when all the smoke cleared and so he wanted to limit the damage. To say he was trying to "do the right thing" with coming clean is not only niave, but disgraces the memory of the little girl who lost her life that day.

40. Oh leave him alone. You pack of hyenas. It's not like none of you haven't done something similar.

And once again, why didn't the media check their facts. It's also extremely irresponsible of TMZ (a celebrity ridicule board, who get paid ungodly amounts for airing celebrities dirty laundry and stragetic PR) would report a story such as this and hang the child out to dry. Do they not understand or care about the long term ramifications this will have on this individual? He's not a public figure. It was a mistake and HE ADMITTED IT.

I suspect it started out as little emblessment that he told his dad. And then his dad ran with it and went around telling anyone who would listen and it spiraled out of control. When his portion of the story started airing yesterday, it was always his dad who seemed to be telling the reporters or some other 3rd hand source. Then the poor kid was in a cornered situation, how could he fess up and make his dad look bad too?

Poor thing is probably going to have to move and change his name with the way people are so unforgiving for such minor infractions. As they say, let thee without sin cast the first stone...(ops, can't find anyone. Who da thunk.)

I hope TMZ does the right thing and removes this story. This is not the time nor the place.
