Clarity in "Chaos"?

Chaos: Click to watchCould a horror movie have saved Natalee Holloway's life?
The creators of the brutal film "Chaos" make the bold statement that yes, their film could have. Though "Chaos" is not inspired by Holloway's disappearance, the movie is being promoted as an unsettling warning to young women and their parents -- and that stance is causing some controversy.

"The movie is so terrifying and horrific to a young girl, we don't think any young girls who see the movie would leave a bar with two strangers," says producer Steven Jay Bernheim. The movie follows two young women who venture to a rave in the woods. They leave the party with a drug dealer to score some ecstasy, and quickly become the pawns in a psychotic gang's sick game. The two suffer through torture, rape and murder and, as some reviews have noted, not in that particular order.

Taking a grisly movie and positioning it as a cautionary tale was definitely a risky gamble, but the filmmakers believe the violence was a necessary evil, saying not enough is learned from cable or network news alone. "The cable shows show the beginning and they show the end. They show nice pictures of Natalee Holloway as a cheerleader and then they show suspects being arrested," says Bernheim, "We show the middle part, the horror and torture in-between that victims really go through." To them, the excessive violence is how to leave an impression.

Director/writer David DeFalco is ready to defend his baby as well, telling TMZ, "People give us slack that that's just our excuse for making a sick movie, but I don't see how anyone can deny that it's gonna affect you ... [it] may actually teach you something about real evil."

Though horror movies are typically aimed towards a young male demographic, Bernheim and DeFalco hope the media attention will make a few more parents pick up "Chaos," which just landed on DVD this week.

46. I seen this movie and I seen the meadhead, roid droid directer who made it. I'd like to do to him what Chaos and his crew did to those girls.

47. These guys were a big hit on Ain't It Cool News, instead of making movies, they shoud take their "watch Chaos and don't get killed" show on the road.

48. Wow, this looks sick!!! I’m gonna’ see it with my friends as soon as I can get it. Nice!!! You people need to lighten up and "get it!"

49. Natalie Holloway and the girls who got killed in Chaos deserved what they got. They were whores, who defiled the holy way and their behavior brought about their fate.

50. This movie looks unreal and sickening. I would maybe see it if I were drunk on Halloween night or something, but that’s it. What is wrong with you people! I would smack all of you in the head if I had a chance. That’s the Chaos you’d see, scumbags!!

51. I heard that CHAOS shows a girl’s nipple being bitten off or something. That is absolutely disgusting. Is the whole movie crap like this!?! I can’t believe you’d devote a whole movie to this, unless there was some sort of huge moral message at the end or something. If I like it, fine. If not, I’ll come rip this producer’s nipples off!!

52. You’d think garbage like this wouldn’t even get out in the theatres and on DVD. They really have this thing out all over the country?? I looked online and saw it was in mainstream bookstores like Barnes & Noble.com and Best Buy and places like that. That is crazy!!! Somebody get these people, if you can call them people…

53. This film serves its purpose to make the audience aware of what goes on in the real world. As gruesome as it is I watched it and recommend you all watch it.

54. I don’t know, it looks kinda’ interesting. I don’t think there are really a lot of movies out there like this, you know, realistic and rough like they’re talking about. I’m sick of the new glossy horror flicks out there with pretty girls and impossible scenarios. I can’t wait to see it, actually.

55. I don’t know what the debate is about. It’s just a damn movie, people. You can either watch it or not. You either get scared or not. You can talk about it after you see it. That goes for all movies. Jeez!!

56. This film could DEFINITELY save lives. I'll defend this film for everything it's worth! Yes, we all know about all the sickos that are preying on young women. But this film literally will open your eyes. Given the brutality and true nature of the film, people will think twice and open their eyes to what goes on around them. This is a film that is not only amazingly filmed, but THE perfect learning tool!

57. hey badisbad, thanks for the enlightment. Y'know the reason I hate going on these talkback sites is that it allows people to call me things like a "dumb ass wrestler guy" when in person they would never even have the balls to look at me the wrong way. But, okay lets say I'm a glutton for punishment.

Going back to Ebert, he didn't recommend the movie because he didn't like the message. He thinks all movies should have a happy ending and have a good message. But at the same time he gave the movie a lot of compliments and started a huge debate over it. Correct me if I'm taking anything out of context?

And thanks for pointing out some of the the bad reviews and the accusations about "Last House On the Left". I could sit here and list lots of great reviews and from prestigious reviewers like Dan Gire head of the Chicago Film Critics Association who wrote in the Chicago Daily Herald review that it "does something no modern horror film has accomplished since 1973's The Exorcist." But I'm not going to do that because obviously the movie is controversial and receives a wide variety of reviews. As for "Last House", yes it was an inspiration but that story was not original either. It was taken from a public domain story called "The Virgin Spring". So, I felt I could do my own modernized version of that story inspired by the drive-in movie "Last House On the Left".

Finally, it isn't "only a movie". That movie captures the core of evil on film like it has never been done before. It has an energy that literally beats people up and mentally devestates them. It is a messenger of evil but that is what makes it very important. And that is what will impact people, especially potential future victims of real evil and violence. And, yes ultimately it could save someone's life. Believe it or not!

58. I don't know what disgusts me more. The subject matter of this so-called cautionary tale or the arrogance of its producer Steven J. Bernheim. I understand he's an attorney. Not hard to believe, as when I watched him being interviewed, his "I'm out to save lives" posturing was as evident as the slime dripping from his pores.

He's not out to save lives. He's out to exploit and profit from other peoples' misery. That''s what lawyers do. This pompous little weasel is no different. He's just changed his arena from a courtroom to movie set.
