"Lost" Diary: A Tale of Two Cities

It's that time of year again -- "Lost" is back!!! This is TMZ's "Lost" diary, written by yours truly -- Daniel, TMZ's TV guy.

Here's how this works: Every week I gather with a group of friends to watch "Lost." I keep a running diary of what happens on the show, throw out some theories and jokes along the way, and hopefully the rest of the peanut gallery chips in with some good stuff. Maybe you do the same thing each week, maybe you don't have any friends who watch "Lost" -- either way, this is the place for all TMZers to sound off on the most addictive show on TV.

I am joined this week by the usuals and a couple of newbies: Ari (our host), Lauren (the "Lost" Nazi) and Matt (be sure to check him out on the new CBS online dating show "Hook Me Up" beginning next week! Couldn't resist.) along with April and Sonia making their debuts.

Enough with the foreplay, let's get to the diary...

9:00 -- Previously on "Lost" is very Others-centric. Obviously the theme for season three is the Others and I couldn't be more excited. Right now if I had to rank the best characters on TV, Henry Gale would be top 5. Charlie would be somewhere around 10,451.

9:01 -- The opening scene mirrors the opening scene from last season. A character we don't know doing seemingly normal things. Except this time, there are other people involved. And then Oceanic Flight 815 crashes and the Others spring to action. This scene actually goes with my idea for a Henry Gale spin-off show. I picture Gale as a modern day Archie Bunker in an updated version "All in the Family." Except instead of Edith, he lives with his partner, Mr. Friendly.

9:07 -- So apparently it's Jack flashback week and he is stalking his ex-wife. Then he wakes up, laying on a table. Kate and Sawyer wake up as well, in different places, but facing similar predicaments. Jack meets Juliet, Kate gets Mr. Friendly and Sawyer gets some guy.

9:16 -- Another Jack flashback with Julie Bowen. Since I have nothing interesting to say about this uninteresting scene, allow me to vent for a second: how big is this island? The Others were living in a little community and our heroes never came close to finding it? There could be a Hilton on this island and we might not know it.

9:18
-- Juliet and Jack have a little conversation while Kate puts on the dress and goes to have breakfast on the beach with Henry Gale. "The next two weeks are going to be very unpleasant," he tells Kate. I tend to believe what he says. At this point it's just a matter of whether Michael Emerson, who plays Henry Gale, wins the Emmy for best actor or best supporting actor.

9:27 -- Jack is trying to figure out who stole his wife and now he's accusing his dad. I can't decide if I would want my doctor to be a crazed obsessive or not. Better than having him be a drunk I guess.

9:29 -- Juliet brought Jack, now hallucinating apparently, a grilled cheese sandwich and some Dharma water. Juliet takes a bite of Jack's sandwich on her way out -- nice move. She's breaking him down, slowly.

9:33
-- Chaci just helped Sawyer break out of his cage, but unfortunately he ran into Juliet and her stun gun. Apparently Chaci's name is Karl.

9:39
-- Juliet returns trying to bring Jack food. Jack goes to sit in the corner so she can bring him food. You know as soon as she starts to open that door, Jack is going to take her down.

9:41 -- Jack follows his dad to an AA meeting and subsequently has a breakdown in front of some strangers.

9:46 -- And Jack takes Juliet down as soon as she opens the door. This will not end well for him. Yeah, Juliet knocked him out. Nice move. I bet if the Others would just tell the castaways what's going on, there would be no fighting. But I bet they have their reasons.

9:50 -- Sawyer is apparently dumber than bears -- kinda already thought that. And now from all indications, Sawyer and Kate are all lovey dovey. Sawyer offers her some food, but didn't she just have bacon and eggs with Henry Gale?

9:53
-- Apparently Jack is being kept in the "Hydra," an underground aquarium of sorts. Juliet avoids questions about being part of the Dharma Initiative and apparently has a "this is your life" file on Jack. Tons of questions abound, but the one I have is this: If she had this file, why was she asking about the plane and Jack's dad?

9:56 -- So Jack drove his dad back to drinking, and, in a way, killed him.

9:58 -- Jack wants to know if his ex is happy. I missed what happened after that because I threw up.

9:59 -- And Juliet broke Jack down. Advantage: Others.

People watch and judge "Lost" for different reasons. For me, I always like to ask "What did I learn this week?" and judge the episode on that. The show raises questions each week, so I don't think it's unfair to ask for answers. So let's try and break it down:

Henry Gale's real name is Ben ... Kate (and maybe Jack and Sawyer, too) are in for a world of hurt ... The island is HUGE ... The shark and polar bear we've seen previously were probably kept in the aquarium and cages, respectively ... The Others read Stephen King.

All in all, I give this episode C+. We didn't learn much and the flashbacks brought nothing to the table. It was the kind of episode that is good unto itself, but doesn't help us much in the overall scheme of things or advance the story.

Hard to believe we only get five more until the show goes on hiatus.

31. I have some inside information.

Juliet was a ER psychologist at a General Hospital in Chicago.
And was in a lesbian relationship with the Chief of staff Dr. Kerry Weaver before joining the Dharma Initiative.

32. Hands down, this is the worst show ever! A soap opera for the masses. Too bad the masses are asses.

33. The season premiere was awful! I was so confused every 5 minutes, then I got a break by commercial. Way too many commercials and much too confusing for the viewer who saw the season 2 finale. It made no sense. I understand that the producers are writing for the bigger picture, but to go from a season finale to a season premier that doesn't start where the season ended? It doesn't tie into anything? Bringing in new blood when there was no introduction and no background? I'm with the others here who are over it! Reminds me of Alias and the Rimbaldi scenario. It was never solved and the viewers got so bored and left.

34. I had to laugh about the island comment, because I was thinking the exact same thing. I mean, you're on the island for how long, and somehow everyone misses the nice yellow housing community? Jeez, how much longer until they find the grocery store and mall?

35. I met one of the producers of Lost on Key West earlier this year. All 7 seasons have been written - the ending has been determined. However, he did tell me that since it's complete, they will delve into the intrcacies of the story lines....to reach the final outcome. Interesting, eh??

36. I don't know why everyone has tought the castaways are in Purgatory - to me the island was a research facility by the Darma Initiative (maybe to study the electro magnetic field), but when a disaster happened or they realized how dangerous the field was they abandoned the project - either stranding the scientists, or were unable to get them to leave. The strange happening are either smoke and mirrors (the metal sound when the monster appears) or the result of drug halucinations.

37. My 2 cents:

The feeling I got is that they were Dharma scientists/researchers stationed on the island and they were going to use Jack, Kate and Sawyer as human guinea pigs for experiments - possibly mental since Ben and Juliet already seem bent on breaking their spirits. However, it seems as though Juliet is having second thoughts about what she's been chosen to do, but she's more afraid of Ben and the consequences if she doesn't do her job.

And it may be possible that all the people on flight 815 were actually pre-chosen and manipulated to be on the plane that crashed into the island. The scene where you see the plane split apart and crash and they all run out of their homes - nobody seemed very suprised. Not to mention Ben immediately ordered the two guys to infiltrate the surviving groups with cover stories, like it was standard operating procedure. And then the flashback where he's there when the ex bails Jack out...it all goes way beyond coincidence.

I actually liked the season opener more than I liked most of Season 2 combined. It's been readded to my tivo season pass manager.

38. I was so looking forward to Lost's return, but was a little disappointed. It's the only show on TV that I make the time to be home for. The first 15 minutes or so had me, then it slowly went downhill, IMO. (I was more in to "The Nine", believe it or not!) Next week looks more interesting, though ... looking forward to seeing the other castaways involved in the episodes. There was a dynamic missing that's always been there before - maybe it was the lack of characters?

39. Curious: Who is your favorite...and least favorite character?

Favorite: Sawyer
Least Favorite: JACK!!!

40. I thought the episode was great! I personally think that we are going to find that someone on the island was also an integral part of Jacks life in "real life". I think that is why they have so much information on him, and I think there will a a connnection there somewhere. I want to say that possibly Desmond was that connection. There meeting each other that day, and his conversation with Desmond, along with the "I love Desmond" but can't be with him "wifey" thing, is something of interest. Maybe it was Desmond who was with his wife at the time, and that is how he knows so much, and has provided that informaiton ahead of time. OR we keep forgetting that Walt had a great "mind" and could do extraordinary things. Maybe Walt or Michael gave up the goods on Jack. Regardless, I tend to believe there is a tie between Desmond, Desmonds wife, Jack, and Jacks wife. There is something strikingly familiar with the faces of Juliet, Jacks wife, and Desmonds wife. They could all pass for sisters - maybe they are?? I think Desmonds wife is involved in the Dharma intiative in some way, or at the very least, her father is.

41. OMG, Looove Sayid! In the promo for next week, it looks like he gets shot! If Sayid dies, I quit! I am looking forward to watching him wage war on the Others... :o)
Hopefully Hugo makes it back to camp without having a stroke or something.

42. Viewership is down from last season. LOST should take a cue from 24 and not go into reruns after the next five episodes. That absolutely kills momentum and people lose interest. Just show the series straight through or at least with absolutely minimal breaks. I don't need to see the premiere episode again six weeks later.

43. I agree with Lisa (#30) too many commericals. Just about the time you were getting into the moment, a COMMERICAL. WHY? There was no tie -in to last season finale. It made no sense. I made a point to go back and watch last seasons last two shows so that I would be ready to go with the flow. But there was no reason to have done that, because "Lost" went in a diffenent direction, no tie-in.

I am a total and complete fan and will continue to watch, however the writers have to do a better job with keeping the viewers in touch with the show and its cast. I tape every show and go back and watch it several times to catch what I may have missed. That' s what I will do this weekend and prehaps i will have a better opinion of the season opener. I am hoping that the next weeks show will be just a little better that this was.

44. the grassy knoll folks will be breathing dead air into the life of this show for a long time.

One point I would like to make..........I'm sure whenever anyone see's a 747 breakup at 10,000 ft the 1st thing that comes to mind is mixing into that crowd of passengers that survived.

who own's that island? Ken Kesey?

45. I've given up watching Lost because it has turned into a combination of Survivor and X-Files with trashy romance thrown in.

That is, Lost has turned to Lust.

They suckered me with Laura Palmer, they suckered me with X-Files, they've Lost me with Lost.

I'll read the summaries but I'm not watching another episode. Feh.
