"Dr. Phil" House Shut Down By Angry Residents

"Dr. Phil" has had to shut down production at a location for a popular segment of the show, after angry neighbors waged a revolt. It seems the cocaine addicts and others who were holed up in the house didn't go over too well with residents on the block.

Every Monday, "Dr. Phil" features guests who live together for a week in the "Dr. Phil House," a home located in the mid-Wilshire district of Los Angeles. Peteski Productions, Dr. Phil's production company, purchased the residence last June. The inside was gutted and remodeled with the help of Phil's wife, Robin. We're told 45 cameras were installed in the home, and a brain center was built in the pool house, dubbed "video village." Miles of wires were run throughout the inside and outside of the house, much to the dismay of complaining neighbors.

But neighbors say the unsightly wires were nothing compared to the nonstop noise and ear-shattering arguing coming from addicts, racists, misfits and others who populated the house. Tom Griep, who lives next door, told TMZ he was none too happy when "two crack cocaine addicts were yelling at each other for all to hear."

Griep adds "Dr. Phil" violated the city's ground rules by taping past midnight many nights and starting up again before 7AM. Griep says some of the production staff were rude and uncooperative. He also claims the staff cut his hedge down. Griep and other neighbors allege the show constantly violated parking restrictions on the street and created an extreme eyesore with cables and all. Neighbors also claim the low-life clientele in the house caused several disturbances.

Neighborhood residents contacted the LAPD and other agencies on a regular basis, complaining that the show was turning their lives upside down. As Steven and Susan Jamerson put it, "Our once-peaceful neighborhood has now turned into a studio backlot." Griep says a production executive told him the taping would continue for several years.

Seventy-six residents signed a petition protesting the production and after a meeting last month with city officials, production was shut down. FilmL.A., the agency that processes permits for shooting TV shows and movies, has been instructed by city officials not to issue future permits for the house in question.

City officials tell TMZ the show had requested eight additional shoots, each lasting between five and nine days, but the request was rejected. An official for FilmL.A. tells TMZ that "Dr. Phil" was trying to turn the house into a studio, and that violates the city's zoning laws.

In a statement to TMZ, a rep from "Dr. Phil" said, "Our primary objective has always been to be extremely respectful of the neighbors and we have accommodated their requests whenever they have arisen." The spokesman says the show has received a lot of neighborhood support.

The spokesman adds that production vehicles did not park on the street and taping was limited to inside the house.

46. The so-called "Dr." Phil is NOT a medical doctor. He is NOT a psychiatrist, nor even a trianed psychoanlayst. He'd probably have an aneurism if asked to identify Jacques Lacan or cite even so much as one sentence from Chapter Seven of Freud's Interpretation of Dreams. The man is wholesale fraud, exploiting poor, defenseless and largely ignorant people in order to stuff his own pockets with millions every month. The man is nothing more than a shrill, pompous hillbilly with an agenda: to con the public at large into believing he knows something about psychiatric issues, a subject far too complex and serious for anyone who would so glibly extol the superficial. Why anyone is surprised that the Dr Phil phenomenon was born of Winfrey's no less glib, but oddly ingenuious mastery of popular culture is no surprise. After all she too, is a master of buying love, telling the public not what it needs to know, but what it wants to hear. This kind of shameless snake-oil salesmanship merely masquerades as benifcient largesse and charitable concern. It's a con-job on the most grandiose scale imagineable, and the stuffy, fat, rather stupid Dr. Phil gets away with it because millions buy into his gamek, without THINKING. And so long as so many fail to challenge or even so much as question this fake, he willcontinue to get away with it. Well, I can at least put this nerd on notice: I am a creature of the media as well, and a well known figure in my own right. And so with this I resolve to keep an eye on his game, and report on it as I see fit. JBY

47. Dr. Phil is a joke. Most of Hollywood is. He is not out to help people for the sake of helping people. He is out to help people to maintain a sympathetic, caring image to the public. He helps for his own self gratification.
The most honorable work in the world is done by those who are not looking to receive any credit or glory for their work. These people just do the work because they know it is their human obligation, and do not try to draw attention to themselves so that the public gives them a pat on the shoulder and tells them what great, moral people they are.
Anyone that thinks that Dr. Phil (and the rest of hollywood) is really out to help people WITHOUT gaining something in return really needs to focus on the grand scheme of things. These are the people you should be calling hypocrites. The people who have made millions of dollars...benefitting from other peoples misfortunes. They then expect us to bow down, kiss their feet, and express sincere thanks because they publicly announced giving a $30,000 charitable donation (tax deductable, mind you) to help children in Africa. (They probably made that 30,000 in interest for 2005). Then they follow up this kindness by purchasing a $200,000 car the next day.
How can anyone defend these people?

48. I think Dr. Phil is trying to help people, but on the other hand he's in it for the publicity and money also. I find it ironic that he is talks about his past a lot, but he never ever mentions his first marriage or his first wife. If he wanted to make this "Dr. Phil House" work, why didn't he put in out in the boondocks somewhere where the whole thing won't bother anyone. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the whole idea of the "Dr. Phil House" is going to make any neighbors in any neighborhood upset.

49. I have seen some really positve things come from Dr. Phil trying to help others! As far as the house being shut down.. I totally agree! He cannot expect to run a show in a neighborhood with children living either next door or across the street! With people that have addictions or whatever they have. I think he should of done it on his own property! He proabablywould of thought twice about airing the show in the first place. So sentiments on that to Ole Doc! " get real" !

51. I think Jerry Springer and what's the guys name who got smacked in the nose with the chair? Are more sleazy and crazy than Dr Phil is.

52. I don't believe there was intentional disrespect on anyone's part; however, these types of productions would be better placed in a home on a ranch -- fenced and away from everyone. Just the volume of fighting on one couples' stay was more than anyone besides the occupants and production company should have had to be involved in, including any occupied dwellings on adjacent or property of close proximity. I hope better thought goes into the next experiment.

53. I just love people who get on these web sites and use name calling on anyone famous. Some like Dr. Phil and enjoy his show but some call him a scum bag. We all have to work for living. Good for him that he is famous enough to make a living with his shows. This doesn't make him immuned to making mistakes like the rest of us. Just keep in mind that all of you who are running him down probably have co-workers and even family members who don't think much of you either. Don't be so quick to judge a man when you really don't know him. I'm not fond of Barbara Walters either, but that doesn't mean that she's not a nice lady.

54. Dr. Phil is just trying to help and i think that he is doing a very good job. Don't get mad cause your problems aren't getting fixed. What does it matter who his son married. I think that Dr. Phil's personal life has nothing to do with the show. if he was such a terrible person then why is he so popular with so many different people and all age groups. Give him a break. I will continue to watch everyday!!!!!

55. Dr. Phil takes on troubled families, and individuals sure. The difference is he follows through on their progress. How is he all about the money when he buys a house and gives these people the support and help they need. Maybe some of those complaining neighbors should go stay in the house under the racist category, since they object to the lowlife clientele. How racist is that?

56. ha ha ha Dr. Phil doesn't "try to help people" he tells them how they should live their life like "him and his prefect wife" What a joke. She's probably out screwing one of Oprah's new sidekicks.

57. What is everyones problem with Dr. Phil, Do you have no life of your own that you have to bash a man that has helped many others????? I think he's great. The show is good. This isn't a 'bash Dr. phil page' I beleive comments were supposed to be posted about the Dr. Phil house, which perhaps was a mistake, I'm sure he didn't think it would get as out of hand as it did, nor did he do it to cause a mishap in the neighborhood. You all need to get a life, better yet, GET REAL & get out & do something positive instead of writing negative comments about a man who tries to help others........Of course he does things for RATINGS....DUH...It is TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

58. I for one like dr. phil I think he is a smart well educated man who trie as hard as he can to help people.
Anyway why doesn't the show build a house on a lot behind the Dr.. phil show?

Just like the big brother house?
This way no one gets annoyed because of loud noises or wires all over the place?

But ,of course this would be to easy to do. They may change their mond now when they see how many people are pissed off at them.

And please all you people out there who love to talk bad about people that have a really good education and who are a whole lot smarter then the everage two faced person.

if you havent had as much as an education as the person you are talking down about please dont say anything at all .

cause you are the one that looks like the fool!

REMEMBER HE HAS THE WORD DR> IN FRONT OF HIS NAME WHICH MEANS WHILE YOU WERE GETTING HIGH AND GOOFING OFF THE MAN WAS GOING TO SCHOOL AND DOING TONS OF HOMEWORK!

60. Anyone who dislikes Dr. Phil, should get someone to show them how to change channels and watch cartoons or something else near their intelligence level.
