Yankee Player Dies in High-Rise Crash

Cory Lidle dies in plane crashNY Yankee pitcher Cory Lidle was piloting the plane that slammed into The Belaire, a 50-story New York City high-rise this afternoon. Lidle perished in the crash, along with one other person

TMZ has learned that Lidle was issued a private pilot's license in February of 2006, which certifies him to fly single engine airplanes.

Lidle, 34, joined the Yankees this season, and has pitched for several teams during his eight-year career, including the Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, and Oakland Athletics. Several of the Yankees live in the very near vicinity of the building that was struck at 72nd Street and York Avenue, including Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui, and, especially, first baseman Jason Giambi and catcher Jorge Posada, who live within just a few blocks of The Belaire.

35. Seriously guys, even if the death hasn't been confirmed, is there really a chance that he's still alive??? I don't think so. Everyone first thought it was another terrorist-wannabe trying to recreate 9/11...turns it was only a Yankee who needed more flying lessons.

36. This is such a sad day for baseball and the whole Yankee team and Fans. I am deeply sadden on the sudden lost of Cory Lidle. I am a big Yankee fan and I can just image how all the other Yankee fans are feeling right now.He has only been a Yankee for a short time. But the time he spent in New York I will never forget he was an amazing pitcher.
My prayers go out to his wife Melanie and his son Christopher. We will never forget you Cory Lidle #30

37. Very sad. It may have been mechanical failure but I think the instructor is somewhat to blame. #1 It was not a good day to be flying ( rainy and overcast) especially when you are training someone to fly. #2 What is he doing flying around Manhattan? He's suppose to be teaching Cory, not giving him a sight seeing tour, to many distractions. I found it interesting that some of these small planes have parachutes attached to them and have saved peoples lives. I went up in cessna when I was 10 and my fathers friend let me fly it for a while, it was very cool. We left from western NJ and flew to upper NY state, landed, had lunch and flew back. My condolences to his family and friends.

39. I think the whole thing is really terrible and tragic, yet don't want to see this sort of thing on TMZ. I visit to TMZ to see if anyone has punched Paris Hilton in the face and low and behold my dreams have come true they did. This type of news should be left to the real journalists not camera men that get spat on by the Avril Llama.

40. Some of you people are so cruel and cold. How can you be so cynical and heartless? It's wrong! Just because the people that died had no emotional, physical, or mental ties to you doesn't mean you have to be so mean and heartless, cold and uncaring towards this man. He was a human being, not some animal! He was a real person that had a wife and a kid, how can you joke about this? I just don't get it! Some of you really need to grow up. If you don't care, don't post. How hard is that? I don't get you guys at all!!

41. Living in the a NY area this was huge news for us yesterday.... One thing I find terrible is that not one news medium that ran this story gave the name of the instructor he was flying with. No one remembers that 2 people died tragically in this and that instructor has a name and there are loved ones mourning him as well.
