Mel Details "Insane" Night To Sawyer

Mel Gibson today gave his first public accounting of the night of his DUI arrest and admitted that, even after his "insane" tequila-fueled ordeal that evening, he had to have several beers the next morning to tell his children what had happened. What's more, Gibson insisted that his anti-Semitic tirade was purely a product of his drinking and not of any ingrained racial prejudice.

The actor began his tour of public contrition this morning with an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America," and he told Diane Sawyer how the evening of July 28 went down, saying he was "wrought" after a day of work, and that he had started drinking again two months prior to that night. After leaving the restaurant Moonshadows, Gibson says he took a few slugs from the tequila bottle as he careened down the Pacific Coast Highway, before being stopped by Sherriff's Deputy James Mee, whom he says he did not know was Jewish.

His upper lip beaded with perspiration, Gibson, seated in his office in Santa Barbara, also told Sawyer that in the police station after his arrest, his first thought before being photographed for the mug shot was of Nick Nolte's infamous photo, and so he slicked back his hair and splashed water on his face just before taking it. Then, after returning home to tell his family about the evening, Gibson said that he had to knock back "a few cold ones" just to face his children to admit what had happened. And he said that when drunk, he has the capacity to "murder inanimate objects," including toasters.

As for his anti-Semitic tirade, Gibson said, "That's not who I am," and compared his drunken screed to children fighting with their parents, insisting that "people say all sorts of horrible things about anything" when drunk.

TMZ broke the story detailing Gibson's anti-Semitic tirade the night of his DUI arrest in Malibu. He has since pleaded no contest to drunk driving and was sentenced to three years' probation. The actor has also entered an Alcoholics Anonymous program. The second part of Sawyer's interview with Gibson will air tomorrow on "Good Morning America."

16. anyone who claims to be christian but then refuses to forgive him whether he says he is sorry or not, and then worse yet go on to condemn him and hold a grudge and publicly badmouth him and boycott his films....then exactly what kind of christian does that make them? In my world of Jesus and his love, no one has the right to judge or condmen anyone for anything that is God's job and no one elses and anyone who cannot forgive no matter what the issue is makes them no better than the one who commits the bad act. And further more the man was DRUNK AS HELL not stone cold sober giving a sober speech at a podium, he was plastered drunk and therefore nothing he said should be taken so seriously. Remember the saying of Jesus he who is innocent himself be the first to cast a stone???

17. All this hype about an actor spouting off some horrid comments he made while drunk. Everyone seems to think they know what is in this man's heart-that he is a dyed-in-the-wool racist. Well, maybe he is and maybe he is just a drunk. Perhaps he hates all Jews, or not, but because alcohol does lower your inhibitions, he may have just been spouting off what ever happened to be running through his mind at that moment. He could have just as easily have made the comment about asians, blacks or whomever. Or maybe he really has a thing against jews, who knows or cares. The reason this is such a big deal is that the press, and the public who craves this stuff make it a big deal. The man has turned himself inside out appologizing what else can he do. Drunk or not it's not a crime to express your personal opinion no matter how un-PC, un-poplular or wrong headed it is. People will foregive and/or foreget or they won't. He's always been kind of a flake. The man is an actor, he makes movies for entertainment. I don't always like the personal veiws of all the actors in movies I see, but it doesn't stop me from seeing their movies if they're good. This man generally makes good movies.

The bigger issue here is, and a few people have pointed it out, is that the man was driving drunk, and only by what ever luck you want to invoke, he didn't kill someone. That is what he should be appologizing for.

18. Mel Gibson=Histrionic nut bag.
Whats with the fliberty giberty behavior and the constant crazy facial experessions? So odd. He is not sorry, he meant every word and that is truly the way he feels. Everyone knows oppinions that are shamefully hidden while sober can easily come spewing out while drunk.

19. This is getting so old, the same negative comments about a man that none of you know personally. Not one of you is in a position to pass judgement.

Whether you like Mel or not when you post ignorant comments only shows how small minded you are. If you can't make your point without name calling, then your behavior is no better than the man your judging.

21. In my experience, when drunk people will say the things they are too inhibited to say while sober. It's still things you believe, but you know better until you get a little too much tequila in you.
Therefore, I don't trust Mel or his apology. Sure, people say dumb things when they're drunk, but have any of you ever made horrible comments about a whole race of people? If you have, then I don't trust you either. Learn how to hold your liquor, this is how people act when they're 15 and have raided Daddy's liquor cabinet.

22. "WOULDN'T IT BE GREAT TO TURN ON THE TV AND HEAR ANY U.S. PRESIDENT, DEMOCRAT OR REPUBLICAN, GIVE THE FOLLOWING SPEECH:

My Fellow Americans: As you all know, the defeat of Iraq regime has been completed.

Since congress does not want to spend any more money on this war, our mission in Iraq is complete.

This morning I gave the order for a complete removal of all American forces from Iraq. This action will be complete within 30 days. It is now to begin the reckoning.

Before me, I have two lists. One list contains the names of countries which have stood by our side during the Iraq conflict. This list is short. The United Kingdom, Spain, Bulgaria, Australia, and Poland are some of the countries listed there.

The other list contains everyone not on the first list. Most of the world's nations are on that list. My press secretary will be distributing copies of both lists later this evening.

Let me start by saying that effective immediately, foreign aid to those nations on List 2 ceases immediately and indefinitely. The money saved during the first year alone will pretty much pay for the costs of the Iraqi war.

The American people are no longer going to pour money into third world Hell-holes and watch those government leaders grow fat on corruption.

Need help with a famine? Wrestling with an epidemic? Call France!

In the future, together with Congress, I will work to redirect this money toward solving the vexing social problems we still have at home. On that note, a word to terrorist organizations. Screw with us and we will hunt you down and eliminate you and all your friends from the face of the earth.

Thirsting for a gutsy country to terrorize? Try France, or maybe China.

I am ordering the immediate severing of diplomatic relations with France, Germany, and Russia. Thanks for all your help, comrades. We are retiring from NATO as well. Bon chance, mesamis.

I have instructed the Mayor of New York City to begin towing the many U.N. diplomatic vehicles located in Manhattan with more than two unpaid parking tickets to sites where those vehicles will be stripped, shredded and crushed. I don't care about whatever treaty pertains to this. You creeps have tens of thousands of unpaid tickets. Pay those tickets tomorrow or watch your precious Benzes, Beamers and limos be turned over to some of the finest chop shops in the world. I love New York.

A special note to our neighbors. Canada is on List 2. Since we are likely to be seeing a lot more of each other, you folks might want to try not pissing us off for a change.

Mexico is also on List 2. President Fox and his entire corrupt government really need an attitude adjustment. I will have a couple extra tank and infantry divisions sitting around. Guess where I am going to put ‘em? Yep, border security. So start doing something with your oil.

Oh, by the way, the United States is abrogating the NAFTA treaty –- starting now.

We are tired of the one-way highway. Immediately, we'll be drilling for oil in Alaska - which will take care of this country's oil needs for decades to come. If you're an environmentalist who opposes this decision, I refer you to List 2 above: pick a country and move there. They care.

It is time for America to focus on its own welfare and its own citizens. Some will accuse us of isolationism. I answer them by saying, "darn tootin’."

Nearly a century of trying to help folks live a decent life around the world has only earned us the undying enmity of just about everyone on the planet. It is time to eliminate hunger in America. It is time to eliminate homelessness in America.

To the nations on List 1, a final thought. Thanks guys. We owe you and we won't forget.

To the nations on List 2, a final thought: You might want to learn to speak Arabic.

God bless America! Thank you and good night.

If you can read this, thank a teacher.
If you are reading it in English, thank a soldier."

23.
Nothing says I'm sorry like a bucket of brains splattered on a windshield.

I just hope it's Mel's brains and not someone you love. People are focusing on the wrong issues here. HR COULD HAVE KILLED SOMEONE. Why doesn't he "apologize" for that????? Mel fans?? Care to answer?? No, didn't think so.

24. I am (was?) a huge Mel fan and I totally gave him the benefit of the doubt when info re: his dad's anti-Semitic views came out...you can't blame a child for his father's sins. However, I do NOT believe that you become a different person when you drink...I just believe that you lose your inhibitions, and act on things that are always under the surface. I do believe that he is anti-Semitic, and that's a real shame.

People can change their hearts, and I truly hope that he does.

26. well maven...if it would have been Sean Penn, Alec Baldwin or any other freaked out lefty.......we wouldn't be having this conversation. and let me tell you something about recovery...after 60 days, if you are working your program...you do become a little bit more clear and honest

27. You know all humans make mistakes. Mel just happens to be a actor whom everyone follows. If it was any other person out there we wouldn't be reading this story. So that in mind , if the man says he is sorry and is seeking treatment why not believe him. Have you ever been around someone drunk? Most say things that are totally crazy and act out. So if we would give a friend a second chance why not Mel?

28. Can anyone suggest something to relieve my STDs (herpes), as well as my extreme halitosis?

29. My impression of his interview was child-like,spoilt man, who has no clue on how to conduct himself in such a serious interview that he was given only because he is who he is. He has not stopped drinking, seen some other photo's of him drunk with various different women on the internet lately. I do not know if they are old photo's to be honest, as most sites are crap to put it bluntly.

30. Rather than making Mel the rotten apple, why don't you take you anger and help your own friends and family. Surely you know womeone who drinks, help them. No, I'm sure you already shamed them enough to where you probably don't talk to them anymore. You shunned them, and now you wan tto do it to Mel. If your dear one made it to the papers, you'd die. Wake up people. This is a disease. A deadly disease. I know first hand as I am slowly dying from end stage liver disease. We are led to beleive a drunk just dies lonely. Not true. We are dying because the alcohol kills or liver (that's vital for filtering/cleaning toxins in our blood and whole body, plus unfiltered blood creates ammonia in our brains, which causes us to go insane)OK, that is my basic understanding of the disease. But to me what is most important is that it made the headlines. NOW maybe a person with the where-with-all, such as Mel, can get the message out as to the real damage drinking does to a person. I, unfortunately, have fallen thru the cracks. I was told I had a 5% chance to live in 2003. They said I wouldn't live 2 years without a transplant. However, the list is about 5 years out. And now I am told that I should be grateful I surpassed that with an xtra year. The last 3 years have been sheer Hell. I stand beside Mel Gibson 100%. I would like him to know that am here, and I am willing to help him get the message out there as to the true effects of alcoholism, if he wants. I'm just living each day as best I can. I hope that people take a good look at themselves before judging. Creative people usually aren't mean by nature, but rather a lost soul who is hurt. Where, when and why is personal and somewhat the demon we fight. Drinking eases the pain, but feeds the demon. Abstinance is the only cure to hold back immediate death. The demon has to be fought as a totally separate issue. Being caught only adds fuel to fire. It is totally up to the drinker to make that choice. If he can't, then family and friends are a must. But what most don't understand is that we need support from people we trust and love. If we've been drinking for some time, well, we probably hurt most of them along the way. That makes recovery almost impossible. Who is there to help us? It is horrible, yet everyday stuff affecting everybody. We need to fight the things we can win. But no one wants to come forward with the truth. Humility is huge. I would tell my story, if anyone wants to listen. Somehow I will get it told, I hope. Mel can get ahold of me. I have some ideas that he and his filmaking talents can get some truthful exposure to this deadly and lonely disease. Let's get all us ex-drinkers together, NOT drinking and see just HOW creative and giving we are, we can make a change. No fighting the makers, but telling it like it is. Our stories are what can make the difference to our children. No matter what, we are ALL children of God. Be strong, be real, Mel. God Bless us all.
