Mel Details "Insane" Night To Sawyer

Mel Gibson today gave his first public accounting of the night of his DUI arrest and admitted that, even after his "insane" tequila-fueled ordeal that evening, he had to have several beers the next morning to tell his children what had happened. What's more, Gibson insisted that his anti-Semitic tirade was purely a product of his drinking and not of any ingrained racial prejudice.

The actor began his tour of public contrition this morning with an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America," and he told Diane Sawyer how the evening of July 28 went down, saying he was "wrought" after a day of work, and that he had started drinking again two months prior to that night. After leaving the restaurant Moonshadows, Gibson says he took a few slugs from the tequila bottle as he careened down the Pacific Coast Highway, before being stopped by Sherriff's Deputy James Mee, whom he says he did not know was Jewish.

His upper lip beaded with perspiration, Gibson, seated in his office in Santa Barbara, also told Sawyer that in the police station after his arrest, his first thought before being photographed for the mug shot was of Nick Nolte's infamous photo, and so he slicked back his hair and splashed water on his face just before taking it. Then, after returning home to tell his family about the evening, Gibson said that he had to knock back "a few cold ones" just to face his children to admit what had happened. And he said that when drunk, he has the capacity to "murder inanimate objects," including toasters.

As for his anti-Semitic tirade, Gibson said, "That's not who I am," and compared his drunken screed to children fighting with their parents, insisting that "people say all sorts of horrible things about anything" when drunk.

TMZ broke the story detailing Gibson's anti-Semitic tirade the night of his DUI arrest in Malibu. He has since pleaded no contest to drunk driving and was sentenced to three years' probation. The actor has also entered an Alcoholics Anonymous program. The second part of Sawyer's interview with Gibson will air tomorrow on "Good Morning America."

31. I wish Mel would stop apologizing to the Jews. Who runs the USA anyway: Bush or the Jewish Lobby ?

Enough already, I'm sick and tired of those apologies. I love you Mel and you are a wonderful human being.

33. hey #1--
AAA is the automotive driving club which would help Mel if he had a flat tire. I think you meant AA, for al-anon

34. Suspect!! Did you know that Mel's rep has someone who monitors the poll above. They want to make sure it always comes out in favor of Mel. Hoping to sway public opinion, of course!

You can fault Mel for saying what he says or feeling the way he does. This is a democracy and everyone is entitled to that right. I may not agree with how he feels, but he has a right.

I just wish he would own up to it and stop blaming other things like alcohol. Please, we have all been drunk, well, most of us, and there is always truth in alcohol. It brings out our real feelings and thoughts. Courage in a bottle!

Own up!!! Be a man and stop blaming others and other things. Mel feels the way he does and he is entitled to!

35. I KNEW FROM KNOWING SOMEONE WHO HAD A BAD DRINKING PROBLEM. IT WILL TAKE A LOT LONGER THEN TWO MONTHS IN REHAB. I'M PULLING FOR HIM, BUT HE LOOKS NERVOUS AND WIRED. HE IS GOING TO NEED TIME TO CLEAN HIS SOUL, AND THE DRINKING PROBLEM. I HOPE HE DOES IT, BEING THAT THIS IS HIS SECOND TIME. A GOOD FRIENDS FAMILY MEMBER FOUGHT MOST OF HER LIFE TO RID HERS. BY THE TIME SHE PASSED AWAY, OLDER SHE WAS IN BETTER SHAPE, BUT SHE HAD A RUFF TIME KICKING IT. IF HE REALLY WANTS TO HEAL, HE WILL, IF DOESN'T HE WON'T. HE HAS A TUFF FIGHT AHEAD, IT JUST DOESN'T GO AWAY IN 2 MONTHS, NOT DRINKING FROM 1985. PLUS THE WORDS THAT SPEWED OUT OF HIS MOUTH. THAT AAA CAN'T FIX, MEL MUST SEARCH HIS SOUL OF WHY IT CAME UP TO THE SURFACE.

Posted at 12:16PM on Oct 12th 2006 by GOOD LUCK, TAKES MORE THEN TWO MONTHS

36. I BELIEVE HE IS AN ALOCHOLIC BECAUSE TELLING HIS KIDS TOOK 3 MORE BEERS AFTER AN ARREST SAD. BUT I HOPE HE CAN FIND THE PEACE WITHIN, BUT I KNOW TWO MONTHS IS NOT ENOUGH, HAVING KNOWN A VERY BAD ALOCHOLIC MYSELF. HE IS NOW THE ONE WHO CAN DO IT, BY HIS ADMISSION, BUT HE MUST WORK AT IT. NOT LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN. TWICE IS TOO MANY.

Posted at 12:17PM on Oct 12th 2006 by 3 BEERS TO TELL HIS KIDS

37. He admits the words came from some place, and they did, some place in his life, so now that is something he must search his soul for and why? The drinking wasn't the reason, it was only an excuse. He can say many things drunk, but this was different. I hope he finds the peace he needs. He would not drink like a fish since 1985 and have 3 more beers to tell his kids, I do appreciate his honesty on that, because every honest thing he says, will make him stronger in his heart. So this is a start I hope. But only time will tell. This will take time, and rehab for two months, will not be a cure all, it will only help him on the road he must walk down. Time will tell.

38. The only thing that boozer loser Mel is sorry for, is that he got caught by the police and the media for spouting bigoted comments while sauced.
His father is a bigot and so is he.
I hope that the large jewish content of Hollywood remembers what he said when it comes time to back his next epic.

39. If this idiot was a true christain, he wouldnt be the alcoholic racist scumbag schovenstic pig we all see. The reason the media and everyone is making such a big deal about this is because he has convinced all these stupid brainwashed christians that he serves The Lord so you idiots can make him more rich and go see his movies. The same thing goes for Bush, they have all you brainwashed christians bible readers thinking they read the bible, only for their wealth and power. Than in reality they go agaisnt everything the religion preaches. They could both shoot a baby in the head on national television and you would still defend him just because they say they are a chrisitian. I dont read the bible or concider myself a chrisitan and would never say the racist things he said agaisnt any group of people or get in my car when Im piss ass drunk to go kill people. All you people that defend him all need to get a new celebrity to look up too.... A real talented person that doesnt have to be part of any religion to get already brainwashed fans.

40. I like Mel, but being half Jewish, I also think using the alcohol is
an easy out. I read about his life, and it delt in some of that, but
I'm willing to hope he gets help and owns up to the life he was
brought up around. If a family member tells you growing up that
(example only) robbing a bank is good, you as a child who look upto
that person believe them, even though it is wrong. You can't blame
the child when it was in the upbringing. I do believe in change and
hope he will search his soul for that. I knew a bad alcoholic, who
would say curse words, but no anti-semitic remarks, did anyone ever
think, THAT MAYBE SOMETHING IS BOTHERING HIM AND IT COULD BE HIS
SOUL, AND IT CAME OUT. HE IS DRINKING FOR A REASON, ONLY MEL KNOWS.
GOD BLESS MEL, PROVE ME WRONG, MEL THEN I'M WITH YOU.

Posted at 12:36PM on Oct 12th 2006 by TIME WILL TELL/ PROVE ME WRONG.

41. whatever... i'm over this story. everyone has some hidden prejudices, and a lot of people act dumb when they're drunk.

there are much more impt issues in the world to get worked up over... and it's embarrassing to keep having to watch this man beg forgiveness in front of the world.

the worst part was the drinking/driving... not the stupid ignorant drunken comments. that is one of the highest killers in this country.

42. Don't buy into this B.S. excuse that it was the 'alcohol talking'. Drunk or not, Gibson is nothing more than just another moronic Anti-Semite like his father. With all of his success and vast wealth, he makes these type of comments about Jews who, not only created the motion picture industry, but continue as THE major players in the business. One of the most powerfull men in Hollywood today, Viacom and CBS Corp. CEO Sumner Redstone was actually born Murray Rothstein and the list goes on and on. Don't bite the hand that feeds you Mel because it will end up biting you right back in the ass!

43. Who cares if Mel doesn't like Jews? He denies it, tries to make ammends...but it's an opinion, he is allowed to not like Jew's He doesn't have to like gays. At least he's not going over to England and saying how much he hates America like the trend is with the rest of Hollywood.

This is AMERICA folks...he can have an opinion. If it ruins his career (yeah, right) then it was his choice to make and I'm fairly sure he won't be starving anytime soon.

He does need to stay off the roads if he is drinking, but so do about a million other people out there...why should he catch more flack than the rest of the people out there that get DUI's? Alcoholic is alcoholic whether or not your are a "star" or an average joe.

Too much hate out there folks...you should calm down and not expect "stars" to be superhuman. Would save you a lot of anger.

44. He is deeply sorry for his actions and [we] will forgive. But one thing keeps ringing in my ear from past personal experiences and those of others...drunk people don't lie. They can't help it. Booze is like truth syrum. That said, it leaves the obvious that he truely thought and felt what he said that night.

Posted at 2:28PM on Oct 12th 2006 by Nickle2a5

45. Being drunk and a raging alcoholic doesn't excuse his remarks in any way. He is only sorry because he was caught. You don't just spout out any kind of slur when you're drunk unless you have thought about it beforehand. I think next time I'm out drinking I'll make some racial slur and just say oops I don't really feel that way I'm just wasted on tequila.
