A in A-List Stands for Africa

So you're an A-list celebrity. You've got everything the observable and commercially-available world could possibly offer -- bling, black card, Bentley. How do you truly distinguish yourself from your peers as a world-class member of celebdom's royalty? Apparently, you take the first Gulfstream to Africa.

Indeed, like lemmings, younger Hollywood is angling to get their own 15 minutes of sub-Saharan fame. Lindsay Lohan has talked about wanting to visit, Britney Spears was rumored to be planning a Jolie-like Namibian birth, and even Paris Hilton is reportedly trying to get in on the act by filming a reality program there.

Of course, Madonna, with her recent adoption of baby David in Malawi, is just the latest celebrity to flock to the continent, making endless headlines in the process. Bono, has been an incredibly diligent and active advocate for African causes for years, and Oprah built a school in South Africa in 2002, among other efforts. Jay-Z, along with the UN, took up the cause of clean water, and has been touring there over the last month, and Alicia Keys has been deeply involved with Africa AIDS charities ever since a 2004 visit.

But if all those stars made Africa seem like a good idea, Angelina Jolie made it a truly glamorous one -- and though she's contributed a great deal, one UN development officer with projects in Africa tells TMZ that it's not all good . "She gave aid work a certain sheen, and made Africa seem like the kind of place you can just go and make something happen," says the UN officer, who asked that we not use her name. "But the reality is that when celebrities decide they're going to go to Africa and 'do something,' the amount of actual good they do can be so disproportionate to the disruption they cause."

16. I do believe that Angelina does a lot of good, and should be commended for that.

However I do believe she is overreaching her abilities. She should concentrate on one project/cause and see it through to fruition rather than globetrotting and just calling attention to situations - basically taking on the whole world. The phrase is jack of all trades and master of none.

An example of her going where she is not needed and will have absolutely no effect was her recent rant about countries with strict immigration policies. Um yeah Angie like they are going to listen to you. I'd love to see her open the doors of her swank palace to the local homeless -- NOT.

She could do so much more if she picked one cause and stuck with it - Like Princess Di and her crusade with to eliminate land mines.

screamers, light your engines, put on the all caps lock......go!

17. Why do you people hate Angelina soo much?

Did you go to the UN to ask about all celebrieties contributions to Africa or just Jolie contribution? Or did the UN worker just by any chance decided to use Angelina as an example.

She is doing something and l would like to know what the staffs of TMZ are doing to help AFRICA .

You comparing the years Bono has being helping Africa to Jolie is not a good comparison since Bono is so much older than Jolie. Jolie has being doing UN work for six years and she is only 31.

18. whatever, You shoud re-read your own postings. You sound like you're so jealous your spitting??? So now they're bad for being able to afford a full page add?? When did you join the peace core? What year and what branch? Easy to point a finger sitting on you duff in front a keyboard.

19. I guess you have not heard of the work she has been doing with UNHCR for the past 6 years. Her recent article on immigration has to do with her position as Ambassador for refugees, incidentally, they are refugees all over the world. She has pledged her money and time to support minors coming into this country, unaccompanied, all she asked was that they be given legal guidance. Angelina is one one person and not a nation, besides she has opened her home to two children and plans on giving to more children.

What have you done so far with your life but criticize someone's effort, it is very easy to hide behind your computer and spout hate.

20. Angelina went to Sierra Leone, Rwanda and other hell on earth places and never publicized it or brought attention to herself. She went to these places when they were still fighting and killing one another. Cameras only started following her, and the media only started reporting on her activities when she and Brad Pitt became an item, and especially after she adopted Zahara. To suggest that she has risked her life, and believe me her live was in danger in some of these places for publicity is beyond stupid. Some of you people are so hate filled, and it is not because of Jennifer Aniston, and the Brad thing. Some of you hate just to hate. It wouldn't matter if she adopted all white children, you would hate. If she gave all of her money to American charities, you would hat. And she does donate to American charities. Some of the Shiloh money went to American charities. This country breeds haters and people who are jealous of anyone who dares to step outside of what is considered the norm, money grabbing and spending foolishy. People love Donald Trump. Why? Because he reprensents the greed and the bad taste that is this country. To have a purpose, outside of acquiring and spending is suspect. This is not about Jennifer. It is about people being made to feel uncomfortable because they know they could be, should be doing more for themselves and other. There are thousands of children in this country that need help. But these children have something here that doesn't exist in African and other poor countries, social services. Remember these people aren't poor because they are lazy or stupid. They are poor because Western countries, USA, Europe, and others came in colonized their country, raped their women, killed their men and stole their resources. And it is still going on today in the Congo and other places. My hat goes off to anyone who wants to help one child if their motives are prue.

21. I don't think the problem is adopting, I think the problem with Madonna is she all about herself. Be honest with yourself, If it was about helping children you could do that in America. See the camera don't follow you to the inner cities of America, and the pub isn't that good. No you got to go to Africa where all the suffering is. I remember the 60's Africa was a hell hole and the 80's same thing and now nothing has changed. Nothing ever will as long as leaders don't care about it's people and birth control is nonexisted. Can't has rampant sex and AIDS and pretend that it isn't really happening. The problem with the Hollywood nut cases is they think can make a difference by just throwing money at it, if the people don't change.

22. #20-Dina, great post! You have said it all and so brilliantly! It has been very refreshing to read so many wonderful, postitive comments for a change. I understand that people have the right to disagree, but it sure is nice when people can do it in a civilized, mature way, without calling Angie or her baby vulgar names. It has been said that Angie has led a wild life in the past. I don`t follow celebs that close to know. I am comepletely impressed with her. She went to africa 6 or 7 years ago, was humbled by what she saw and has completely changed her life because of it. Her marriage to BBT ended because she ended her wild ways. When Angie and Brad leave this earth, they will be remembered by a tremendous amount of people who have benefited from their kindness. I never really cared to meet a celeb, but I do hope someday I get to meet them. God bless them and their lovely children.
tmz-stop hating these two already and show Brangelina fans more pics of them together. Kissing each other would be real nice.

24. ah Mary I do a lot more than you think but if I told you I might have to kill you afterwards....just kidding. In realilty, yes, every single day I work for the betterment of my community and have done so in the following areas - public housing, the environment, public transportation, economic development, non-profit social services and the list goes on and on. But you can't do all that at once unless yu have a large staff, and if you don't you take it one project at a time

Don't get so defensive, all I said she could do much more if she didn't spread herself so thin. You can't save the world all at once. What is she above any suggestions or advice? Hardly ,considering she has only been doing this for 6 years. Whether you believe me or not, I am qualified to give advice because I have spent the last 18 years of my life studying the issues of justice, civil liberties, and public programs, earning degrees in these areas and actually working, not just speaking, on the issues I mentioned above.

25. sad?? annoying?? WTF people! Honestly I don't give a flying f*** which celebrity chooses to jump on the bandwagon, I'm elated that they are bringing resources and attention to places on the continent of Africa that have been in desperation for MANY generations, I have not one negative thing to say because when starving children are being fed, AIDS education and medication is being provided, light is being shined on areas where woman are raped constantly so that something can be done, there should be no thought other than are these people doing something are they helping. On a side note, I've always wondered are there any other people that give like we do here in America and not just the rich or famous but our everyday, regular citizens. I don't think so or know so and I'm proud of us people!
