Celebs Who Claim They're Green but Guzzle Gas

10/18/2006 12:45 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Hybrid cars are all the rage in Hollywood. Celebrities drive them like they're a badge of honor. You save a few gallons of gas, you save the planet. Right? Well, not when you hop on a private jet and burn enough fuel to propel NASCAR through 2050.

Of course, the stars need to go here and there. The location shoots, the fabulous vacations, etc. But that's why God created United Airlines. G-IV's, on the other hand, were created in the image of precious celebs.

Julia Roberts

On the ground: Roberts drives a Prius, which gets (at best) 60 miles to the gallon, shaving 30 miles off a normal car's mpg.
In the air: Chicago/LA, 1,749 miles in a private jet, the route she took with Rupert Everett while shooting "My Best Friend's Wedding."
Gas guzzled: 2,100 gallons of jet fuel.
Prius Penance: Julia would have to drive 30,000 miles, or roughly once around the earth and then some to even out her consumption in the air.
So Julia says: No word yet from Julia's rep.

Jennifer Lopez

On the ground:
J-Lo tools around in her 60 miles-per-gallon Prius.
In the air: LA /New York, 2,475 miles in a private jet. Lopez was actually sued by a private jet company for allegedly skipping out on the bill, though she says it's all a misunderstanding and she was not supposed to be billed.
Gas guzzled: 2,750 gallons of jet fuel.
Prius penance:
She'd have to drive 45,000 miles, and that's a lot longer for Jenny than just going down the block. It's actually more like twice around the earth.
So Jennifer says: There was no comment from Lopez's rep.

George Clooney

On the ground: George favors a Tango, an electric car that gets a whopping 135 miles to the charge.
In the air: Los Angeles/Tokyo, 5500 miles in a private jet.
Gas guzzled:
7,000 gallons of jet fuel.
Electric shocker: Even with his super-saver Tango, he'll have to drive over 57 oceans -- Pacific Oceans to break even.
So George says: Clooney's rep, publicist Stan Rosenfield, tells TMZ, "You clearly have no understanding of certain people's need for private transport," and points out that Clooney often has "no control" over his travel schedule.

Brad Pitt gets off his private jetBrad Pitt

On the ground:
Eco-champ Brad is yet another Prius-lover, and he reportedly has several hybrids in his stable.
In the air: Los Angeles/Namibia, 9,400 miles in a private jet.
Gas guzzled:
11,000 gallons of jet fuel.
Prius penance: Brad burned enough fuel to take a Prius to the moon.
So Brad says: Pitt didn't have any comment. His rep tells TMZ that Pitt is out of the country.

Leo fueling his PriusAnd the true-blue Green Award goes to ... Leo DiCaprio.

On the ground: Leo drives a Toyota Prius
In the air: Leo flies just like us folk -- commercial, unless he positively must fly private because of scheduling.
Prius penance: None.

Well, my god people! Clearly if TC-Atlanta has never heard any of these people preach about conserving energy, then it's obvious they haven't! God knows, he/she is more observant of what they do than ALL of the rest of us. And for all of you scum-sucking SUV drivers, you must stop! He/she is telling you of the evils! Never mind if you carpool, have to transport a wheelchair, or are unable to bend down into a regular car. Listen to this person! He/she clearly knows better than the rest of us.

#8 (Michael) ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..................Paul Newman. They just don't make 'em like that anymore. Class act all the way.

Glee (I'm baaaaack)

TC you make no sense
"do their part quietly and conserve" they obviously aren't conserving with their private jets

and then you call people PIGS for probably using less fuel than they do.

I also hate SUVs but if you call someone a pig then I guess George is also in the same pen.

GLAD TMZ IS AROUND TO REPORT about the reality of most of these clooney is the worst of all of them.....constantly complaining about media intrusion and then you find his fat face all over vanity fair in a puff piece comparing him to cary the only thing you and cary have in common is you both like to suck c**k..........j.lo, brad, julia, so typical, they want a certain profile presented to the public (one that has nothing to do with who they really are) and they behave like spoiled children with even the smallest tibit of truth leaks out.....these celebs are dependent upon the ignorance of the masses between new york and los angeles who believe their crap....once you have been around them for a few years you realize that 90% of them are over indulged brats who have way too much money and get way to much attention for all the wrong reasons........

The oly one I respect out of that group is Leo. He has always put his money where his mouth is without the glare of the media spotlight. Folks need to take lessons from him.

Also, these celebs needs to realize that the average Joe does not fly on private jets 10 times a month. We are doing much more for the environment than they are.

Reality Check and CP - get a life!! I DO have a husband who is physically handicapped and has been so since 1995, yet we still conserve by driving far more fuel-efficient cars, and I do indeed carpool! It isn't convenient much of the time, but sometimes sacrifice hurts a bit. Like it or not, most SUV drivers have those gas guzzling HOGS because they like them - not because they NEED them. I can assure you - those gas guzzling HOGS (yes, I said HOGS) which outnumber the smaller, more fuel-efficient cars 5 to 1, use far more fuel than the small number of private jets flying around. I don't claim to know everything, but I do keep up with much of the political rantings and ravings of the rich and famous. I am telling you that, unless you have a specific example of either Julia or George spewing hypocritical crap, then that makes you the idiot. As a matter of fact, they both seem to be in the minority of stars, these days, that do keep their politics to themselves. However, if you know differently, then give me an example. I'd love to hear it.

Once again you guys makeup some dumb you were the first to discover this.
If you paid attention to the real "press", you would know every little bit helps. Atleast they are doing something.
What is the staff @ TMZ doing....please dazzle us with your conservations efforts.
The way you dazzle us with your hard hitting stories.

P.S. Wasn't "My Best Friends Wedding" like ten years ago>

News outlets have been commenting on this behavior for years. They may save fuel on the ground, but the damage that their private accomodations cause on the environment overshadows all their "goodwill." I congratulate DiCaprio(who campaigns all over the states for a better environment), but maybe he would garner more attention if he started calling out celebrities on their hypocrisy. That seems like something average Americans would pay attention to, since they seem to know more about J.Lo's bra size than they do about world events.

Julia Roberts is a spokesperson for Earth Biofuels Inc. There, I gave you an example. You need more? Now who is the idioit? TC, you need to spend mroe time thinking before you talk.

I don't understand. Celebs work all around country and the world. How else would they get to where they need to go?
What about executives and sales people who have to travel a lot? They probably use more jet fuel then any of these celebs do.
Silly story.

Reality Check, YOU don't "GET IT".

IF you were of the upper crowd, and did fly to your destinations, vs. Greyhound, you would know that commercial aircraft go out with empty seats ALL OF THE TIME.

The Dutchess could of chartered a jet but she took the standard commercial flt instead. THUS, saving TONS of jet fuel.
And the flt that she was on went out with 4 empty 1st class seats. There were also 50 empty seats in coach, on that perticular flt. Who should we blame for THAT happening?

It was posted that "Stars" charter jets for privacy, they can buy more seats in 1st class for privacy and save the fuel and polution from the charter.

Great bunch of stars. Glad to see them all driving fuel efficient vehicles.

Reality Check

They can't buy those seats if one celebrity is too busy buying all the seats in order to maintain her privacy. Besides, you are making the assumption she did this on a regular basis and only on planes where there were four extra seats. What about planes with larger first class sections? Do you suppose she bought all of those seats too? Or, perhaps did she choose then to fly first class? The point is, you don't know. All you can do is hypothesize, yet in the meantime you get all hyped up because one time she did something you consider to be right.

Either way, the end result is a celebrity spending a lot of money to fly somewhere in a situation where no gets to fly "with" them. Take a few deep breaths and contemplate that.

If it will make you feel better, however, I won't even bother attacking your assumption about my own personal mode of transportation. I, in the meantime, will take comfort that you just succombed to the weakest of all arguments: you fell to insulting me in order to make your point. Too bad you missed your mark.

I dont drive an SUV but what is the difference of someone who drives an SUV 10 minutes to work and someone who drives a Camry 30 mins. to worK? Same amount of environmental damage. SUV owners arent the cause of our enviromental problems. Unfortuantely its a collected effort with EVERY ONE of us at fault =(

Dont blame, do something =) If we spent as much energy bitching and responding (like I am now-ha!) we would be much farther ahead in every aspect of our society & environment.

I have always felt these stars are hypocrites for telling us how to live and living another way. I cant imagine the inconvenience REALITY CHECK feels a star is subject to flying first class could in any way compare to the inconvenience the average working stiff feels riding public transportation every day to and from work. I flew once to Europe and had the misfortune to be seated in the very center of a 747. Now that is an inconvenience, took three days for my body to recover. They live in houses too large for 75 people fly private jets, own boats that waste fuel and then tell me how my car is damaging the environment What BS

would love to see how the average celeb score on the how green are you test.
