Haley Joel Osment Cops a Plea in DUI Case

Haley Joel OsmentTMZ has learned that actor Haley Joel Osment has pled no contest to two misdemeanor charges stemming from a horrifying late car crash in July. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Osment plead no contest to one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of possession of marijuana.

Osment was sentenced to three years probation, 60 hours of alcohol rehab, six months of AA meetings (with a minimum of 26 meetings within that span of time) and was fined $1500 in penalties.

Osment, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in "The Sixth Sense" at age 11, lost control of his 1995 Saturn on his way home and collided with a brick pillar in a suburb of Los Angeles around 1 a.m. on July 20. No bystanders were injured in the wreck, but Osment wasn't so lucky: the actor was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was treated for a broken rib and an injury to his shoulder.

The collision caused the vehicle to flip over onto its roof and come to rest a short distance from the initial impact. The actor was reportedly alert and talkative following the accident, and was alone at the time of the crash.

31. Haley is quite simply growing up.He is a fine example of youth overall. He is sliding slowly into the spectrum of boy to man phase don't You thinkand with the pressure of being in celebrity "limelight," almost constantly the Boy is maturing, however while maturing haven't we all fell a few times?DPP

33. Well, guys. I was unfortunate enough to get a DUI at age 19. He was hit with a tougher fine than I. Plus, he has to do rehab and AA meetings, which I didn't have to do. I just hope this will be a wake up call for him. He is so freaking talented and ,I thought, more intelligent than the other Hollywood brats around his age. I had the pleasure of meeting his Dad once, he's a motivational speaker of sorts, that tours college campuses. He was a very nice and down to earth man and cares deeply for his son.
The embarrassment from this will probably be enough to straighten out this kid. We hope. Hopefully this was just an isolated occurrence or lapse of judgement that won't happen again.

34. First time offense for DUI and minor weed possession? It really is what anybody his age would get! Hopefully this will be some sort of a wake up call to this young man before he actually hurts or kiils somebody. Cause, usually, when the drunks get on the road, they kill somebody else, not themselves!

35. I agree that everyone in law enforcement babies these famous people. But as
you can see, by letting them get away with all this, in the end they cause their
own demise. You don't have to even wish them revenge, life and their conduct
ruins them in the end. Look at Nicole Smiths son and his sorrowful death. Due
to bad combo on drugs.

36. He is just a person who has to go through the things that anyone else has to go through just to figure out where he is going and what really is important. There are very important issues that he must contend with that ordinary people don't. With greatness comes a great pricetag. If he has chosen a lifestyle that puts him in the "limelight", then he has an obligation to living a life that inspires others to greatnessl, also. I still think he is incredible and he'll just have to think about his actions and where his life is going.

37. I am really disappointed in this terrific actor. Of course I don't know his life situation. I hope he has learned a very valuable lesson and will look for better ways to amuse himself. I also believe a week or two in a real jail would make a big difference.

38. Someone was saying that this was chump change and a slap on the wrist. The kid might have that much anymore... I mean when was the last time that we saw him on the screens? And he was driving a 1995 Saturn... NOT a Jag, Some huge SUV, or other expensive car. A Saturn... Oh and thats about what you will get about anywhere... Its a minor misdemenor. The max is 6 months in jail, and 1,000 fine in most places. I am happy to see that he got 3 years probation, most cases with these stars, they get off...

39. Uhm.
What makes you people think he got off easy because he is a celebrity? I mean, I am pretty sure if he wasn't a celebrity, being 18 with a clean record, you could get off pretty easy. It isn't automatic jail time for drinking and driving, or posession. I think, given the circumstances, his punishment is fine.

40. At least he didn't blame anyone for any wars. I'm looking at you, Mel.

41. He is lucky that he is not saying " I see dead people";or, more importantly I killed people. Everyone deserves a second chance hopefully he will learn from this experience and I would say AA meeting by choice for the rest of his life would be more appropriate.

As for comments about what he was driving this materialistic school of thought is distructive and fuels the very act that he was found guilty of. So drive your 95 Satturn but drive it sober. So that you and others around you will continue to see living people.

42. You people are all crazy. My boyfriend (who is not famous) got a DUI and he got off a lot easier than that so that wasn't just a slap on the wrist. And who cares who does what drug?

44. I live in Pasadena, down the street from where he got in the accident. I recently graduated from college in So. Cali. and a majority of my fraternity brothers got DUIs and all of them, and I repeat, ALL OF THEM got the same punishment as Haley Joel Osmet. The only difference was, my bros. lost their licence for a year, which it doesn't mention happening to HJO. Is this really that big of a deal? Most of the comments sound like they are from a bunch of cry-babies; GROW UP already! I'm not disputting that drinking and driving is a serious offense, but if it doesn't involve you or someone you personally know, then who gives a crap!!! This story sucks, I want to smoke a bowl with Paris.
