Bad "Dog Whisperer"?

World-renowned dog trainer Cesar Millan is taking some serious heat for methods used on his hit show "Dog Whisperer." The American Humane Association recently deemed some of Millan's techniques "inhumane, outdated and improper." Now, as the show gets ready to launch its third season, TMZ has learned that the widely respected organization tried to get the show pulled from the air.

The group claims they were forced to take action after witnessing "numerous inhumane training techniques" on the show, including one instance where they claim a dog was partially asphyxiated after it was pinned to the ground by its neck. "We wanted National Geographic to pull the show" Bill Torgerson, Vice President of Animal Protection Services for American Humane Association, tells TMZ.

But the National Geographic Channel stands behind their star, claming that owners of several of the allegedly "abused" animals contacted them and praised Cesar for his work. When contacted by TMZ, the channel pointed out that the show has received a seal of approval from multiple respected professionals and animal organizations.

TMZ has learned that as a result of the AHA's concern, the show will now feature a cautionary statement to remind viewers "There are many methods of dog training and owners should work with professionals to choose the right approach for them."

Torgerson tells TMZ that they are still working closely with the network on "eliminating the broadcasting of certain techniques" but they've stopped their push to pull the show entirely.

Season three of "Dog Whisperer" debuts Monday on the National Geographic Channel.

16. To bad Caesar didn't come along sooner to help educate well meaning dog lovers- Too bad there is always going to be that small population of flaky people who cannot see a good thing when it comes along.

17. I cannot believe someone is complaining about Caesar. He is such a wonderful person and such a big help to dogs and people. I think the animal association needs to get a life. All these dogs are being put down everywhere and you get a man who deeply cares and helps dogs and you have to find a fault with him. I love animals and rescue dogs on occasion, and I would give anything for Caesar to be here right now and help with a dog who is scared to death for three months because a thoughtless owner dumped her in an area. Luckily alot of people care and feed her.By the way, Caesar's book is great and helpful, to.

18. This man is incredible. When I watch him, I think to myself, "This man makes sense in a crazy world. He is firm, loving and let's the dog's and owners remember that are limits in all relationships." Some of these techniques should be used in human relationships too. Ceasar, you are the best!!! Keep on keepin on!!!

19. I think Ceasar is awesome! I wish he would come to my house and help me teach my dog not to bark and whine anytime someone comes to the door or act like she almost died when I come home...back off jerks! go find a some REAL abusive people

20. I think Cesar is the BEST! Our whole family watchs his show, we have learned LOTS, and it has helped us with the dogs we have adopted and the ones we foster for our local Humane Society!

Our family recently adopted another dog from a shelter elsewhere, and was told by shelter staff the same BS, we were told we HAD to take an obedience class, and that we were NOT to use his (Cesar's) techniques. What BS that is!!!!!

21. This is ridiculous! Cesar is the best thing to come along for unruly dogs ever! I dont have a dog but have tried a couple of his techniques on my cat and they work! The AHA should be focusing its efforts on more serious animal abuse issues--such as harsher penalties for animal abusers--and leave Cesar alone!

22. I think Cesar has demonstrated over and over again his compansion for animals. I certainly believe that certain dogs would be uthinized if they showed the kind of agression that has been seen on the dog whisper. Cesar has shown ways to save lives of dogs that the humane society are putting to sleep because of agression towards other animals and food. Thank you Cesar for a different perspective on training dogs. Keep up the good work!

23. you can tell by looking at the guy that he loves dogs. that dog that he subdued was a small dog, but completely in a mode where the only thing that it was going to do was attack. the technique of changing a dogs frame of mind is brilliant.. and the dog is ultimately happier because of it.

24. I have watched Ceasar's program about everytime the program is on. I have never seen him mistreat or hurt a animal yet. These people must be bored, they need to go after the people who are abusing their pets, not someone who is saving them. Do they realize everyone of his dogs would be dead now if he did not work so hard to save them? Also the animals he works with on the program would have been given way or killed. I can't believe these people, they need a check up from the neck up! Leave Ceasar alone!!! He is wonderful, we have learned alot from his program. We have a aggressive lab that would have ended up at the pound if it had'nt been for Ceasar's techiniques. Thank You Ceasar.

25. This is NONSENSE! He seems to be a wonderful person capable of working with these animals. I have read an article about him in the LA TIMES. More power to HIM!

26. That is absurd, this man has worked hard to save animals that would otherwise be put to sleep. I recently got a new puppy after 15 years (I own 2 old dogs) and his advice and tips are excellent. I am glad to hear that the National Geographic Channel is standing behind him. This group of so called Animal Rights activist need to wake up..... what would we do without Cesar for advice and instructions. I watch his program all the time and have found nothing offensive.

27. There are many aspects to Caesar's training methods that are not shown on T.V. and you must realize that since it is a T.V. show, they will only show what the audience wants to see.

I'm not saying that all his methods are ineffective, but there are some that come into question. For example, I heard about how a previous client sued him for using a method on their dag referred to as "helicopter." It involves a choke chain, and well, you can imagine.

I've been around many veterinarians: private practicioners and even veterinary behaviorists at the UCD Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital who really seem to despise him, and I'm sure it's not without validation.

So, even though what's on T.V. looks good, please, consider what goes on behind camera.

(And by the way, I'm not affliated with PETA or any organization- I just think people should weigh all details)

29. CESAR helps dogs that otherwise might be sent to the pound and possibly put to sleep for being problematic. Hey, I'm as much of a 'tree hugger' as the next person, however, if a doggie needs a 'correction' when being trained then he needs a correction. It's kinda like a 2 year old sticking a fork in an electrical socket. You really can't sit a baby down and explain the properties of electricity and why NOT to do it. They won't understand it.... but a quick pop on the hand and a 'NO' will keep him away from it (aversion). KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK CESAR!
