Bad "Dog Whisperer"?

World-renowned dog trainer Cesar Millan is taking some serious heat for methods used on his hit show "Dog Whisperer." The American Humane Association recently deemed some of Millan's techniques "inhumane, outdated and improper." Now, as the show gets ready to launch its third season, TMZ has learned that the widely respected organization tried to get the show pulled from the air.

The group claims they were forced to take action after witnessing "numerous inhumane training techniques" on the show, including one instance where they claim a dog was partially asphyxiated after it was pinned to the ground by its neck. "We wanted National Geographic to pull the show" Bill Torgerson, Vice President of Animal Protection Services for American Humane Association, tells TMZ.

But the National Geographic Channel stands behind their star, claming that owners of several of the allegedly "abused" animals contacted them and praised Cesar for his work. When contacted by TMZ, the channel pointed out that the show has received a seal of approval from multiple respected professionals and animal organizations.

TMZ has learned that as a result of the AHA's concern, the show will now feature a cautionary statement to remind viewers "There are many methods of dog training and owners should work with professionals to choose the right approach for them."

Torgerson tells TMZ that they are still working closely with the network on "eliminating the broadcasting of certain techniques" but they've stopped their push to pull the show entirely.

Season three of "Dog Whisperer" debuts Monday on the National Geographic Channel.

46. For Marie- I don't doubt that there are more 'positive' techiniques to use on SOME DOGS...Many of the dogs he 'rehabilitates' have seen other trainers just like you who tell the owner that their dog will never be able to live a normal life and that they should just be put down. So in that instance maybe it's time to try something different. As for your clients that you need to do 'damage control' on: That is THEIR FAULT. Before every segment (and when returning from a commercial) it states DO NOT ATTEMPT THESE TECHNIQUES AT HOME. Every dog needs something different and the owners are not in tune enough to decide which techniques will truly work for their pet. As for the body language of the dogs in the center...I'm not sure if you mean the dogs that are normally there or the dogs that have been taken there, on the show, to be rehabilitated. If it's the latter, than OF COURSE their rigid. Most of the time the dogs he takes there haven't been properly socialized and don't know how to truly be a dog. All the other dogs there (that stay there on a normal basis) seem perfectly happy to me! I don't feel that you are 'jealous' of him...I do think that your irritation with him stems mostly from your clients, who, as I stated before, watch the show and decided themselves what was right for their animal. To me that doesn't leave any real reason to dislike him. As for the backpack issue...would you say that dogs that are raised on farms and the like that DO have jobs to do are mistreated because they are worked until tired day in and day out??? Almost all dogs were bred for some sort of 'job', if you will, and that need to work does not diminish merely because they live the city life. It seems to me that most of the people who are against him have not read his book and only watch his television show. It's a television show...was the television not made for ENTERTAINMENT purposes? His book gives much more insight and it too states that techniques shouldn't be tried by anyone other than a professional.

For dog lover: I can't dismiss your claim, as I don't know you. BUT at the same time I don't know you and I see no proof. Unlike most people these days I will not just believe whatever is written. If you felt that there was something inappropriate done while your dog was in his care, why didn't you take legal action??? If your dog had welts and the like I would assume that you wouldn't have too hard of a case. Even if you did not 'win' you would certainly find out how your dog had received these.

For Intern: While I agree with you that more goes on when the cameras are off (good or bad...none of us know for sure) I feel that your account of 'hearing about' something like the 'helicopter' is far fetched. If the person really did sue him I'd be interested in seeing something stating that it did occur (the helicopter OR the legal action). I'm sure that the people in the communities you stated DO despise him, but I bet it's probably for the same reason that Marie does. He supposedly makes 'a mess' of other dogs because the owners do not read (or HEAR) the warning before the show commences from commercial breaks. I do sympathize with the professionals that are stuck dealing with 'damaged' dogs, but I hardly think that blaming Cesar is the proper route to take. If the owners are taking it into their own hands than the blame should be put onto the owner. It's no different than people saying that music and movies create serial killers, robbers, rapists and the like. Television is entertainment and not something that people should mirror. There's a difference between seeing a profession or job on television and thinking "That's what I'd like to do for the rest of my life" and watching a program like "The Dog Whisperer" and saying "I've watched it, now I can be a dog trainer too!" while using the same techniques he shows. People just need to use more common sense.

48. Crazy. Less than a year ago the National Humane Society presented him with a Special Commendation for his work with dogs.

49. #33 - you're an idiot. I can't believe TMZ doesn't police their comments better and remove yours

#38 - good review but the guy went from a clay house in mexico to a massive client base in the U.S. and his own TV show - I'm guessing that wouldn't have happened if he did not possess a unique talent working with dogs.

50.
wake up, sheeple...

whenever a person in the public eye takes a principled stand -in this case, the issue at hand is illegal immigration- which is contrary to the approved memes, that person will pay a price down the road...

if cesar had kept his mouth shut, there would be no ginned up 'outcry' by some over his alleged 'abuses'...

besides, for anyone who hasn't caught on yet, here is the cliff notes of the dog whisperer :

1. dogs is dogs, peoples is (mostly) peoples; YOU are the alpha...
2. dogs ain't lawn accessories, status symbols, child substitutes, or dressup dolls...
3. walk your dog every f***in' day...

51. Are you kidding!!! I too am an animal rights advocator and vegetarian!!! OMG, Everything Cesar has done for these poor abused and neglected red zone cases should be applauded and recognized. Instead you self righteous "animal activists" people? should keep your negative comments to yourself and go after real animal abusers. I've seen this episode that is in question, Cesar uses an actual technique real pack leaders use when a member of a pack is out of control, there was absolutely nothing inhumane about this at all. Just keep in mind, if it wasn't for Cesar's dedication and commitment to most of these animals, they would be put down. So to all of you "animal rights" morons, focus your negativity elsewhere!!!!!!!

52. This is crazy. I am a dog trainer myself. I wish the Humane society would leave him alone. Here in lies the problem, there are to many humans that think dogs are little people with fur and fail to realize they are ancestors to wolves and certain things are hard wired. They see the world differently than us, period. The humane society sees someone having success and is jealous to say the least. Ill tell you whats inhumane putting an animal down because u cant find it a home, or worse yet putting the dog in a 5 by 5 kennel for 23 hourse a day. peopel at the Human society may have the best intentions but have no clue when i comes to dog behavior. For example, their way of testing dogs for new homes that just came off teh street is to put them in a room with a person who they dont know or trust and use a fake hand and back them into a corner and if the dog bites or shows aggresion they put them down, now thats inhumane. these people are rediculous to say the least, everyone is concerned about being politically correct, whatever happen to doing something that works, ceasars training methods are not only humane but they dogs flock to him becasue of his calm assertive behavior. take any wolv in the wild for example, whatch them interact, thatswhat they undestand period and thats what cesars uses becasue he has seen this first hand. all you love your puppy into submission people should really get educated and ask yourself., do i really know what i am doing, chances are u do not, ceasar is great at what he does and desereves to be commended, so i say thank god for cesar and i wish there were more people in the world that were as smart as he becasue if there were there would be no leash laws, no aggressive animals and no humane society, and i think the SPCA relizes that! enough said, GO CEASAR

53. Little Billy, who posted his pathetic mispelled message on Oct 26, is obviously an animal abuser who thinks that having vicious dogs is some kind of status symbol that makes up for some sexual inadequacy he has. Billy, if your dogs are capable of "ripping someone a new a**hole" then maybe they can do that favor for you someday, LOSER! Somebody ought to investigate you.
Cesar Milan is a genius, and what he says makes sense to any intelligent person. I watch "The Dog Whisperer" all the time, and have also read Cesar's book. His main premise is to WALK YOUR DOG, and "pinning" is not cruel. Any time someone becomes famous, they come under attack by someone who thinks they should be brought down a peg or two. Pick on people who deserve it, like Madonna, who buys little black babies cuz it's the "in" thing to do...
CESAR MILAN ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

54. Cesar is the first peron I've seen on nationwide tv who has the guts to speak the truth about dogs. He faces antagonistic remarks and threats from people who do not understand the canine and instead insist of turning then into humans, I admire Cesar for speaking up and saying what needs to be said for the betterment of the dog and of the human living with this dog. Animal Rights people often, in my dealing with them, are not nearly as interested in truth as they are in seeming like the rescuers and the animal worlds' only hope. They get off on this and they cause way more harm that good. It should first and foremost be about the dog, and that often is not the case with Animal Control people. I've taught formal training and have helpe rehabilitate dogs for over 30 years, and I see Cesar Millan's methods as fantastic. His methods are something I have believed in for so many years, but never could find the same support in helping these dogs as I find in Cesar. He loves dogs, and he loves humans. Like me, I see that Cesar gets more upset with dog owners who insist on continuing poor treatment of their dogs when these methods obvious only contribute to the problem. The dog is so confused and needs calm, assertive, guidance from someone who has their best interests at heart. Cesar is bringing this to the intention of so many of dog caretakers, it they will only open their ears, eys, and their hearts to these animals they claim to love. LOVE means accepting the animal as the animal he is, not trying to treat him in the same way you would treat a human child or family member.

56. After reading this attack on Cesar, I will re-think where my donations go to help animals that are in trouble, and need help. This organization clearly don't get it, and there are a few commentors here that don't get it either. This attack on Cesar is typical of the dog owners who think their dogs are humans and/or jealous dog trainers who wish they had a hit T.V. show.

Maybe I will tell my German Shepard (who was 77 lbs. at 7 mo. old and is now 10 mo. old) that he is grounded next time he acts up, or maybe I should have asked him real nice if he would stop being aggressive towards my rabbit, or my other two dogs (dacshunds). Of course I shouldn't do that, and anyone who does is a moron. Jersey now knows that the rabbit is of no concern to him, and the other two dogs are just that, two more dogs and everything is perfect. I thank Cesar for every part of it. I think the people that are attacking Cesar should be submitted with two fingers to their throat.

57. sounds like another cry for attention for peta. those of us that know better and love meat and the warmth of fur laugh at this outrage. i would also like to say that peta has some gross directors and editors that make up there short films of cruelity, but there films are great for this time of year being that holloween is near.

58. I have seen nothing but good come from Cesar's training methods. I have watched the show over and over again. I have seen Cesar pin a dog down only when it was overly aggressive and ready to bite. I did not see him choke the dog, only hold the dog down in the laying position. I believe PETA should retrack their statement and send Cesar an apology! Thank you NG for ignoring PETA's letter and going forward with Cesar's new season. We all are looking forward to it!

59. First of all to Billy in comment #33 nobody wants to hear you uneducated, redneck and ingnorant oppinion. Maybe your kkk friends do but we don't, so find something else to do! I am a former veterinary technician for my local Humane Society and a animal rescuer. I am also a activist against Breed Specific Legislation. I personally have been involved in more euthanaisa than I can possibly stomach and for the rest of my life will have to live with that. I feel personally that if Ceasar or someone like him had been around to help and to educate, I wouldn't have all those deaths on my hands and on my heart. He does amazing things for dogs and his training is justified in everyway. I can guarantee, I will never send another donation to PETA or AHA! NEVER! I would rather send my money to Ceasar and maybe he could put it to use for a family who can't afford his services. PETA and the AHA obviously haven't heard of dog fighting, ingrown collars from tethering, backyard breeders, puppy mills and other forms of abuse that ARE a serious problem within our society today. I also find it funny that no negative reports have ever been made public by any individual until this. I know how i love my dogs, and if they had been mistreated by Ceasar the whole country would have heard about it then, not now! In the amount of time it took for these two organizations to make this rediculous allagation and focus on this, I can only ask how many dogs have died in dog fights and in shelters or on the streets? Please PETA and AHA? I hope that blood on your hands has made you feel better about what you do! Wait what exactlly is it that you do because now I am not so sure!? I would love to invite anyone to take a pack of pit bulls and do what Ceasar has done, when you do that then I might take your word! Until then nobody can convince me that there is another way! As a matter of fact he is the only trainer out there that I have never actually heard say "there is no help for this dog, it should be euthanized" when on the other hand I have personally heard many dog trainers say those exact words. Ceasar has taken natural dog behavior and applied it to training techniques. Where exactly do you people find this to be cruel? Keep up the good work Ceasar and always remember the animals thank you even when the idiot humans don't because they are only worried about the political side of everything!

60. I have been training dogs since I was 14yrs old and participated in Obedience competitions. You will always have the Animal Rights nuts who will protest and/or misunderstand what is going on.

What Cesar does, by any other name, is Dominance training. It is training based on the natural instincts of the dogs and is actually the most humane training I have ever experienced. There are some dogs that yes can learn by treats and cooing, but more often than not you will run into dogs who are more stubborn and will rule the "roost". I was introduced to the techniques of Dominance training 20 yrs ago when I started working exclusively with Huskies. It is hands-down better than the old chain collar yank-the-heck-out of the dog style which is still being taught around the country or the "reward" training which only works while the treats are there than you've got a little beast on your hands.

The only thing I have seen that I have real concerns about is when he puts the dogs on the treadmills. I'm afraid that someday some handler will think the dog is fine and leave the dog alone....to come back to a strangled dog.
