Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe Split

Reese and Ryan splitReese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe have separated. The couple's rep released a statement to TMZ Monday morning that says "We are saddened to announce that Reese & Ryan have decided to formally separate. They remain committed to their family and we ask that you please respect their privacy and the safety of their children at this time."

Sources tell TMZ Witherspoon has contacted celebrity divorce lawyer Robert Kaufman, who has represented Jennifer Aniston, Roseanne and Lisa Marie Presley.

Reese and Ryan Photo GallerySources say Witherspoon spoke with Kaufman about divorcing Ryan Phillippe, her husband of seven years. The couple has two children. They met at Witherspoon's 21st birthday party.

As for why Witherspoon contacted Kaufman, we're told it was not triggered by one event. Rather, one connected source says it was "cumulative."

Divorce papers have not yet been filed.

258. They should outlaw marraige in Hollywood. Just let them live together and then split when they are through with each other. There is no way that two inflated egos can comprimise and last in the land of make believe.

259. It seems weird. If there was one couple in Hollywood that I thought could make it it would be them. They seemed some what normal. I feel so bad for their kids.

264. I am completely shocked. They seemed like one of the most stable couples in the world. They stayed out of the media circus and seemed very focused on their children. The always praised one another in interviews. Where did this come from?

265. My husband and I were flipping channels YESTERDAY and landed on "Just Like Heaven" We had a small chat about how cute she is and how real she seems. My husband said, "I sure hope she and Ryan never split." Sucks! I was really rooting for them to stay together.

267. I love him, I love her, I love them as a couple. I am so so sad. I hope they change their minds and work it out. True love is so hard to come by. I hope they rethink this decision and get back together. I really thought that would be the couple to make it. I love both of their work. I admire both of them and want them to get back together.

270. I still believe she is grounded and the children are first. I have no idea who he is other than her husband. She comes across as very sincere -- hopefully she is.
(As a sideline tho -- I followed someone for over 20 years and thought he was so sincere. Took my rose-colored glasses off and saw how naive I was!)
