Brad's Unauthorized Vanity Fair Cover

10/31/2006 7:20 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Brad Pitt struts his stuff on the cover of December's Vanity Fair -- and TMZ has learned that no one was more surprised to see the steamy cover on stands than Brad himself.
Brad Pitt on Vanity Fair.
A source close to Pitt tells TMZ that Brad shot the photos, taken by artist Robert Wilson, in September 2005, but didn't have any idea at the time -- or anytime since -- that they would be used for the cover of VF. Pitt had agreed to be in Wilson's avant-garde video art project last year, and signed a legal release at the time for the still and video images taken in the shoot. But until the Vanity Fair cover emerged this week, Pitt didn't know that he would be the magazine's coverboy.

Reps for Vanity Fair tell TMZ, "In a letter dated October 5, 2006, and sent to Pitt care of Brillstein-Grey [Pitt's managers], Wilson informed Pitt that a still image from his portrait was going to be featured in the December art issue of Vanity Fair." A source says that Pitt never saw the letter.

Pitt's lawyers are said to be weighing their legal options. His rep gave the following statement to TMZ: "We are very disappointed that Vanity Fair has chosen to put an unauthorized cover on their magazine. It seriously makes me question their integrity and motives."

A rep for Vanity Fair tells TMZ: "Brad Pitt posed for a Robert Wilson video portrait, and in the photo release (signed by Pitt), agreed to allow Wilson to use the portrait or any images from that sitting in connection with any publicity on Brad copies his loversWilson's video project. Vanity Fair decided to do a story on Wilson's video portraits and obtained rights to the entire collection of photographs from those sittings, which included Pitt's."

I should be so "unhappy" with a pic like that taken of me! I don't think Brad can take a bad pic....

As a celebrity (no not paparazzi) professional photographer, I am apalled at the Ego & ARROGANCE some of these celebrities convey or should I say have! One example (Michael Richards aka Kramer). Just because you are famous for being in the entertainment industry it doesnt give you the attitude of winning the Nobel Peace Prize or inventing the telephone like Alexander Graham Bell! Your telling me that just because you "perform" humanitarian endeavors in Africa and India it gives you the right to control some upcoming & lesser known photographers careers that have a chance to have their work gracing the cover of Vanity Fair? Your kidding me right? I hear that Brad won't even let famous photographers own the syndication rights to images of him! How selfish is that when we make less than half his Nanny's salary. You are in show business! There has been publicity for over 100 years! FAMOUS=PUBLIC! Move for good and get out of the industry or live in a cave! Step off your high horse and maybe you may be thankful enough like Arnold Schwarzenegger to let someone such as myself or Annie Leibowitz have syndication rights to images just like most other celebs who have CLASS! Need I say more? Well, I have personally met Brad and remembr when he drove a beat up Jeep Cherokee! Remeber your roots? I doubt you were rich like now and definitely not famous at all! I know Michael enough to have spent 4th of July at his home watching fireworks among other dinners there at his home. The photos of Brad in Vanity Fair are AMAZING! So, I suggest Brad needs to relax because his carrer could go where Michaels has gone and he may end up backpeddling for dollars. SO RELAX and let artists make money instead of being paparazzi following them around to live a decent life as well. Share the wealth. Don't be greedy. Greed gets you nowhere!

I am so tired of celebrities whining... Let them try to tough it out in the real world with the rest of us for a week, I'll bet it'd make them cry. Guess what Brad, life's not fair.
#136 is right on the money with their comment, I'm actually ashamed that Brad and Angelia are representing our country.
And, for the record, there is at least one woman in America who wouldn't touch Brad with a ten foot pole. Aside from his personal hygine issues, he's just not that attractive...
Jennifer is way better with Vince, now there's a hottie.
