Chris Rock Files for Divorce

Chris RockTMZ has learned that Chris Rock has begun divorce proceedings against his wife of nearly 10 years, Malaak Compton-Rock. TMZ is told that the comedian has hired a high-powered divorce attorney to represent him.

The couple, married in November of 1996, has two daughters -- 4 year-old Lola and 2 year-old Zahra. Malaak is the Founder and Executive Director of StyleWORKS; a non-profit, full-service salon that provides free services for women leaving welfare and entering the workforce.

When contacted, Rock's rep would only say "I cannot comment at this time."

Chris, best known for his stand-up comedy as well as for a controversial turn as the host of the 2005 Oscar telecast, once told NBC's Stone Phillips that marriage was "beautiful" but added, "If you're a guy, [your individual self] is dead. Get rid of you. Take yourself to the door and wave. Hey, see you later. It sounds horrible. I'm happier than I've ever been now that I've shot myself in the head."

Rock is currently in post-production for the film "I Think I Love My Wife."

61. I am in shock! I can't believe that Chris Rock and his wife are divorcing. You didn't see them as much as other couples. At least Malaak isn't an actress like the now divorced actor-actress couple of Reece WItherspoon or Ryan Phillippe. Maybe their marriage went south or the magic just disappeared. They were a nice couple. I wish both of them the best in their now separate lives.

62. We shared the first class cabin with Chris Rock and his wife and child (they only had one at the time) and they seemed totally happy and the baby was adorable and well behaved. What the heck happened?

63. Why is everybody ragging on Chris? Could it be the wife at fault? Since there is no information given, let's not jump to conclusions. Everybody is innocent, until proven otherwise, even Hollywood types.

64. Yes, Chris, and as a woman, I can attest that the same thing is true. Get married and become nothing more than an accessory. Life as an interesting, sexual individual ends altogether after he puts the ring on your finger. You're better off confused yet invigorated by dating rather than dead to the core of your soul in marriage. Yeah Chris, I definitely feel ya on that one...

65. Seems ubiquitous, let's hope for Mr. Rock's sake...that he has a good reason.
I doubt it, however. A divorce is unfair when you commit to marriage and fatherhood, then...bail out of it 'cuz with millions...it's still too hard to handle.
Your quote about saying goodbye to yourself when married is a lame excuse.
Your identity increases rather than decreases because you grow with the job. Well, at least some of us do...Mr. Rock, I'll send you a dollar so you can buy a clue.

66. i hope that she takes him for everything that he has. men get a slap on the wrist when it is divorce time. they pay a little bit of money and think that they have done something. they should pay. why should they spend money on their next girlfriends children. i am sure that it was something that he did. women don't usually mess up a marriage.

68. The comments I have read are so one-sided! So Chris doesn't love his wife anymore. Trust me, he's gonna pay for his change of heart, but he's got some beautiful kids, and I don't see him as the kind of guy who will let his kids do without. Maleek is along for the ride. She has done NOTHING to contribute to his massive earnings, but she will live in EXTREME comfort for the rest of her life because she bore his children. Not a BAD DEAL!!!! Wish I could find one that good. Chris Rock may not be the most handsome man in the world, but, (especially for a black man, considering how few can be bothered to even own up to parenthood, never mind supporting his family in the top 1% of US lifestyles) he is funny, smart and very charming. I'd say his wife just struck gold. I think the fact that he didn't even bother with a prenup shows that he never intended to screw her in the first place. HOW MUCH DAMN MONEY DOES SHE NEED? Is the MASSIVE amount she will receive (regardless of how high-powered his attorney is) is more than she could otherwise dream of having, even if she can't have Chris Rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

69. the problem with hollywood is that most actors think real life is still acting. welcome to reality homies...maybe what celebs really need is a regular hard working middle class individual. someone with morals and knows what its like to live the real life and not some fancy glamorous fantasy world. but hell, who am i to criticize. im middle class and im divorce....but my bitch was crazay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

70. I cant believe hes getting a divorce, I thought that he was going to come out with a sitcom about all of these divorces ( Whitney & Bobby, Reesee &Ryan, and Brad & Jennifer). But Chris? getting a divorce? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

71. I can't stand Chris Rock .....he is sickening. If he's filing for divorce it must be his big head ego.... His wife is too pretty...she can do better. I just hope she gets BIG BUCKS ON PAY DAY.

72. For those of you trying to depict Chris as the bad guy...you don't have a clue. Despite his on-stage persona, Chris is a family man. In Hollywood circles, it is a known fact that Chris barely hangs out. If he is not working, he is at home with his fam. It is so easy to try to make the man the bad guy, but in this case, I think you need to get real and get the facts...

73. You guys are all wrong...I ...She is a materialistic bitch and has held him hostage in that marriage for years. He tried to do right by her and she made him miserable . He gave her everything she wanted..the kids, all kinds of material crap..she spends money like it grows on trees. She acts like she owns everywhere she goes...not nice. Birken bags, nannys, diamonds in her damn toenails...all the crap. He has been wanting to divorce her for a while but was afraid of how she was going to ass rape him financially..but I guess he just had had enough of her bitch ass and doesnt care how much it costs him. Chris is a great guy and loves his girls and will pay what he has to. He will continue to make money and give it to her ..I hope he gets to be with someone cool and smart this time. Chris is one of the nicest guys in the business and a pleasure to be around and work with.

74. It's way too easy to get married? That's why everyone is getting a divorce. Dragging children into it is even worse. Shame on Chris Rock and all the other celebrities who think they can just trade up at the expense of children.

75. Mr. Rock is a brilliant comedian, but he's not the flyest brother in the world----if he's trying to be out after a decade and wants to get in that @$$ w/ a high-powered attorney, then the gloves are off and he's declaring war. Malaak is a beautiful, intelligent woman and the mother of his children, she'll likely nhave no problem getting back on the game. As for Chris.....yeesh. I hope the babies don't suffer, this is painful. His next woman will be bimbo eye-candy, watch.
