Delta Burke Too Gay For Nashville

Delta Burke, Leslie JordanDelta Burke and Leslie Jordan were "uninvited" from a Nashville TV talk show, when show's producer thought the plays they were promoting might offend the show's "very conservative viewership."

Burke and Jordan were booked to appear November 10 on "Talk of the Town," a daily talk show on the CBS affiliate in Nashville. They were uninvited in an email that said: "Sorry, but after closely reviewing the subject matter of the two plays written and directed by Del Shores I have decided that it would not be in the best interest of Talk of the Town to [have] an actor come on the show to discuss the plays. We are dealing with a very conservative viewership who I feel would be offended by the show's titles and their topics."

Writer/Producer/Director Del Shores says, "Somehow I think that the people of Nashville are a little more diverse and open-minded than the producers of 'Talk of the Town' are giving them credit for -- at least that's been my experience in one of my favorite cities."

Emmy winner ("Will & Grace") Leslie Jordan, who is from Tennessee, said, "This denial from the producer of a local TV show came as a major slap in the face."

"Southern Baptist Sissies," explores the lives of four gay men raised in the church. "Sordid Lives" is coming out story about a Texas family preparing for a funeral. Shores authored both, and has written episodes of Showtime's "Queer as Folk."

Both plays have won more than 40 prestigious Los Angeles theatre awards (L.A. Drama Critics, Back Stage West Garland, L.A. Weekly, Ovation, GLAAD Media Award), and this year, the L.A. Weekly Theatre Awards honored Del Shores with their Career Achievement Award. The shows will next be seen in Ft. Lauderdale on November 17, 18 & 19 at the Broward Center's Parker Playhouse.

Calls to WTVF in Nashville were not immediately returned.

16. Nashville is a wonderful place to spend a day or two is you love country music and don't mind shoving your head up your butt.

17. Think this kind of behavior from your local tv station is unacceptable? Let the FCC know, they're coming to Nashville on December 11th for a public hearing.

18. 'NOT OK TO BE GAY'...Being gay is actually genetically predisposed; supposing one of your precious children is gay and you've just taught him to hate himself? You and your grammatically incorrect trashy mouth are the reason why gay teens commit suicide. BTW, gay men come in all sizes: "real", flamboyant, gang member, truck driver, sissy, etc. Perhaps you should stop watching your brother poke your sister/mama/aunt and switch on the news. There is a LOT you're missing going on in the world while you're making moonshine in the backwoods.

19. I would like to think that the network clearly had their viewers in mind when they made the statement. However, no matter how you put it, they still come off sounding condescending and narrow minded. That's a lethal combination to have if they are trying to reach a broad audience.

20. ezze take it however you like, and I'm sure you will, but when you choose to be gay,you are no kind of man. Your comments in one ear out the other. It will never be ok with me. Gay teens need a church or hotline to get help.

21. I just moved to Nashville several months ago and I heard that Nashville was more liberal than many give it credit for. However, it is in the same state that overwhelmingly voted this month for a state amendment defining marriage to be strictly between a man and a woman.
I'm heterosexual and I don't care who you choose to date, fornicate, love or cherish. It's not my business and it shouldn't be the government's.
Let's face it - mainstream Americans who watch TV shows like this (and vote too) just don't get it. Maybe when they evolve in a few hundred years, something will change.
In the meantime, bring on Delta Burke, Leslie Jordan, and the themes that their play illustrates. Some of us here in Tennessee can handle it and we believe everyone deserves their basic human rights.

22. Interesting TMZ, here is a release and a story that appeared in a nashville gay rag that Shores put out after putting out his original release. Judge for yourself what was going on here with his original release.

“When All is Said and Done, We Are on the Same Team,” — Del Shores
Del Shores

In a Nov. 8, 2006 release, Del Shores indicated that he had a long and productive telephone conversation with Michelle Bonnett, executive producer of NewsChannel 5’s “Talk of the Town” and “Out and About Today.” Earlier “misunderstandings,” as both Channel 5 and Shores have since termed them, had become public. With the latest release, Shores indicates that he and Bonnett have reached an understanding.

In the Nov. 8 statement, Shores says, “After talking to several respected gay leaders in the Nashville community and hearing all the support that Channel 5 and Michelle Bennett … have given the gay community there, I offer a heartfelt and sincere apology to Ms. Bonnett and Channel 5.

“I judged them by one act – my first and only opinion of Channel 5 at the time – after the stars of my plays ‘Sordid Lives’ and ‘Southern Baptist Sissies’ (Delta Burke and Leslie Jordan) were invited to appear on ‘Talk of the Town’ on November 10th by producer Tuwanda Coleman, and then subsequently uninvited by the same producer….” (See earlier CSFP stories for details).

“After reading the untruths and judgments that have been written about me in the past few days,” Shores continued, “I certainly know how painful it feels for you to have all of your work and the good that you have done be dismissed over a single error in judgment.”

On Nov. 8, Shores and Bonnett spoke by phone, a conversation the Shores’ release described as “long and productive. “(Ms. Bonnett) admitted to me that Channel 5 could have done better in communicating with my team initially,” but then went on to say, “She also shared with me her support and struggle in fighting for the only gay show in the South (she told me she took on the Southern Baptist Convention when ‘Out and About Today’ was launched and that did it for me!), I now consider Michelle Bonnett to be a hero. And I certainly don’t think Michelle Bonnett nor Channel 5 is homophobic – in fact, my opinion is quite the opposite.”

Shores noted, “I did, however, tell Ms. Bonnett that by not having Delta Burke and Leslie Jordan on ‘Talk of the Town,’ because of the gay subject matter of my plays, is supporting homophobia. But I understand Channel 5’s position, especially after (the Nov. 7) overwhelming vote in Tennessee to discriminate against gay and lesbian's and their families. Sadly, we’re not there yet.”

Shores said, in the release, “I dream of a world where gay subject matter will not be an issue when booking the Emmy-Award winning, Chattanooga native Leslie Jordan and the two-time Emmy nominated fabulous Delta Burke on a mainstream talk show,” concluding, “Michelle Bonnett and I both agreed that when all is said and done, we are on the same team, fighting the same fight.”

Bonnett indicated to CSFP that she did not have additional comments regarding the matter.

23. It is 2006. Almost 2007. Even the people of Nashville have to know by now that being gay is a biological condition and not some whacked out nose thumbing of the "establishment" by a bunch of perceived sinners. I mean it's not like WTVF was asked to do live remotes from the San Fransico Gay Pride Parade. It's DELTA BURKE for crying out loud! And as for the #13 comment -- I bet one of your kids is gay. Or maybe you are... those who hate gays the most are typically ashamed of thier own homosexual tendencies and act out by hating other gay people... Ted Haggard much? It's a fact!

24. "It's nasty .Where have all the real men gone. "

Well, there sure aren't at your house! What a pity your children are the spawn of ignorant trash! I would rather have a gay couple living next to me than trash like you!

26. People of Nashville too "conservative" to be exposed to those nasty, homosexual evildoers? Oh, such delicate souls !
On the other hand, might it not be more to the point that the staff of "Talk of the Town" and/or the Nashville CBS affiliate managers are themselves the terribly offended, anti-homosexual crowd?
Still further, might it be that the CBS bosses at the top have "suggested" their Nashville affiliate put the kybash on Delta and Leslie for fear of offending our right wing religious gay-whacking resident of the oval office and his neocon fundamentalist constituencies across the midwest ?

27. Tennessee is a very depressing place for pets. It's like the Third World!

They don't spay and neuter, they just dump puppies and ktitens on the street to die.

There are people from OTHER states trying to help, go clean it up.

That to me gives a bad impression of "conservative." It just seems like backwoods, backwards, caveman stuff!

28. I agree with Jodie #12. I've lived in Nashville my entire life and even though the community is welcoming to all types (we're a VERY FRIENDLY city), Talk of the Town is a very lame show directed towards elderly people that are waiting for their "stories" to come on. They probably would be very offended.

29. I was in Nashville years ago for a B52's concert. I had never been to the South before and was a bit surprised they had the wherewithal to create such a pleasant city, but I guess some things never change.
