Delta Burke Too Gay For Nashville

Delta Burke, Leslie JordanDelta Burke and Leslie Jordan were "uninvited" from a Nashville TV talk show, when show's producer thought the plays they were promoting might offend the show's "very conservative viewership."

Burke and Jordan were booked to appear November 10 on "Talk of the Town," a daily talk show on the CBS affiliate in Nashville. They were uninvited in an email that said: "Sorry, but after closely reviewing the subject matter of the two plays written and directed by Del Shores I have decided that it would not be in the best interest of Talk of the Town to [have] an actor come on the show to discuss the plays. We are dealing with a very conservative viewership who I feel would be offended by the show's titles and their topics."

Writer/Producer/Director Del Shores says, "Somehow I think that the people of Nashville are a little more diverse and open-minded than the producers of 'Talk of the Town' are giving them credit for -- at least that's been my experience in one of my favorite cities."

Emmy winner ("Will & Grace") Leslie Jordan, who is from Tennessee, said, "This denial from the producer of a local TV show came as a major slap in the face."

"Southern Baptist Sissies," explores the lives of four gay men raised in the church. "Sordid Lives" is coming out story about a Texas family preparing for a funeral. Shores authored both, and has written episodes of Showtime's "Queer as Folk."

Both plays have won more than 40 prestigious Los Angeles theatre awards (L.A. Drama Critics, Back Stage West Garland, L.A. Weekly, Ovation, GLAAD Media Award), and this year, the L.A. Weekly Theatre Awards honored Del Shores with their Career Achievement Award. The shows will next be seen in Ft. Lauderdale on November 17, 18 & 19 at the Broward Center's Parker Playhouse.

Calls to WTVF in Nashville were not immediately returned.

31. 'NOT OK TO BE GAY'...I'll break it down for your ingenious mind: You can wring your hands all you want but the only way to prevent gay is to not have children. Do the world a favor and have your owner get you spayed.

32. Oh please--I've lived in Nashville 25 years and produce television shows both locally and nationally. Given the fantastic personalities of both stars (not to mention the local tie-ins), there were plenty of great ways to do these segments without offending anyone. I'd say the producer is clearly over her head. As for the trailer-trash talk, I'll quietly refrain from bashing other cities/states/regions. I don't know if it's good manners or good sense...but I learned long ago that generalities about other people don't make much sense. Many of you could benefit from the same lesson.

33. I live here in music city. Most of the people are gracious no matter what your proclivities.Although our latest election showed that way too many of my fellow southeners are easily frightened by the differences in society{ie..minorities}.You know most of us have this kooky newfangled gadget called a remote that allows us to chose our own viewing options. CRAZY EHH!

35. These were both excellent plays with excellent performances. Nashville is a diverse community....but the entertainment value of having these two on that show trumps the gay card any day. Even Ken Mehlman would catch a belly laugh.

36. Originally from Tennessee, I know that there are many educated, articulate, and fair-minded people in the south and especially Nashville. This however is not the view held by many people here in the Midwest where I've lived for many years now. Various negative stereotypes of southerners abound here and not just amongst the low-brow set. Stories like these are the reasons why because they confirm that the business of hate and exclusion (in the name of Jesus of course) is still alive in well in the "new south". Sure, they had to tone-down the racism and move it underground, but the queers are still fair game for blatant degradation and humiliation by hate mongers. As long as the voices of hate are the loudest ones heard coming out of the south, the stereotypes of southerners and-worse yet-the southern status quo will remain unchanged.

37. This is to John and his "cliche" response. What you wrote, "Absolutely disgusting....I feel bad for the people of Nashville, no wonder everyone thinks they are uneducated, red neck, hillbilly, white trash, trailer park crackers. Its because of statements like this. I think everyone should boycott the show and write letters to get the show off the air. Im sure they would have been the same people to host KKK rallies on the show." I'm from Nashville and how dare you stereotype the people of Nashville. Uneducated-oh please! Trailer park trash?? I live in a suburb of Nashville and trailers aren't even allowed where I live...and Oprah is from where I live and her father and step mother are my neighbors. So next time before you type a response, think about what you're saying b/c what you wrote is completely untrue. Don't be so cliche John. Write something that someone would actually agree with and not something they can hear from a 4 year old. Of course when people hear Nashville, they think of country bumpkins but let's put things into perspective. So many well-educated people came from Nashville..to name a few: Martha R. Ingram, chairwoman of Nashville-based Ingram Industries, was ranked 81st on the Forbes magazine list of the 400 richest Americans, with a net worth of about $2.3 billion; Michael Dell, founder of industry giant Dell Computer Corp., which employs thousands at distribution plants in Nashville and Lebanon, Tenn., was named the 15th richest, with $9.8 billion; Thomas Frist Jr., chairman of Nashville-based hospital chain HCA Inc., has a net worth of $1.7 billion, making him the 124th richest individual in the nation. So put that in your pipe and smoke it.---Oops, I guess I'll ended it with a "John cliche".

39. Hey Not OK to be Gay:
You are exactly the kind of person I was talking about, and if you could read, I said I feel bad for people of Nashville because the country thinks everyone is like your redneck ignorant white trash trailer park ass. I really hope one of your kids are gay to teach you a lesson..Maybe youll understand it better when you see your young son acting gay as a small child like all gay people do...Its something your born with, and you dont become gay overnight when they decide to have sex with the same sex. I knew I was different from a very young age, before I even had a desire to have sex. Until the day you stupid brainwashed ignorant christian idiots relize that, or have gay children of your own, there will still be biogtry in this country. Black people went through it, but still are going through it because of people like you. So go back to your trailer, have fun being barefoot and pregnant and go have some more kids bitch.

40. So sad-- Nashville is a really cool town with a diverse community of hetero- and homosexuals, liberal and conservative, etc. people. The fact that this story has made the news just highlights one negative event that could have happened anywhere and giving the false impression that the whole city is ignorant and anti-gay.

41. "Guess what ,I'm tired of turning on the tv and my children seeing two guys together."

Well guess what...I'm tired of having heterosexuality shoved down my throat every time I turn on the tv, read a magazine or open my front door. I'm sick of hearing about your spawn and how my existance threatens them, when the real danger is having parents who fixate on sex every time they see two men together. Being gay is not just about sex; it's about who we love and want to spend our lives with. It's only about sex in the tiny little minds of fundamentalist bigots who are the real perverts, as proved by the way they've perverted the teachings of the Bible to serve their own bigotry.
