Audience Laughs at "Kramer," Seinfeld Pissed

In one of the most awkward moments in the history of late night television, a shamed Michael Richards appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman to apologize for his racist, hate-fueled rant. It wasn't meant to be funny, but the audience laughed anyway.

Richards agreed to appear on the show, even after Letterman took a comedic jab at "the guy who played Kramer" on the Top Ten list, at the request of his good friend and former co-star Jerry Seinfeld. Jerry was there to promote "Seinfeld" Season 7 on DVD.

As Richards began explaining the "nasty things" said about "Afro-Americans," the audience couldn't help but chuckle. Seinfeld, immediately scolded the crowd, saying "stop laughing, it ain't funny." But the crowd couldn't help themselves.

The confused fans continued to chuckle, and Richards seemingly blamed Letterman for the awkwardness. "I've already heard you make some jokes about it and that's OK, but I'm really busted up about it."

Richards admitted that he may have acted without thinking. "I'm hearing your audience laugh ... and I'm not even sure that this is where I should be addressing the situation."

406. To all the people who compare what other Black comedian's do to Michael Richards outburst should realizes you expect to hear language from them, that's their hook, He has no excuse! He meant to say that, and of course Black people should be pissed and unforgiving. Just like Jewish people will never forgive Mel Gibson. So, why is it okay for Jewish people to be upset, but Black people should laugh it off because it was in a comedy club??
I hope the people do sue him and win for damages. It's a good case with no defense.

407. Black people would love to let go of the past, unfortunately it's just not possible.Just recently, on a school bus in Louisiana a school bus driver made 9 black children go to the back of his bus..

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14505545/

But hey, I guess those kids and their parents should just get over it, eh?
If you can't see why a white guy calling black folks niggers is worse than black guys calling white folks cracker, well you're just stupid frankly. Please go get yourself sterilized so we can stop this muddying up of the gene pool, and over crowding of trailer parks.

Also, context! I've seen white comics make ethnic jokes around people of color and get laughs, and obviously vice versa. Why? Well, maybe because they were actually talented, and it was meant to be part of the act.
There was no attempt at humor from Richards, he said what he said out of hate, not sarcasm. And will you idiots please stop mentioning Lenny Bruce and this loser in the same sentence?

As for the giggling on Letterman, I think it's more that they saw a no talent idiot throw out the term "afro-American" than anything else. Is this guy stuck in the 70's or what?
As for Seinfeld, well I think the guy is just trying to preserve the Seinfeld franchise, seeing as how they just came out with the season 7 dvd.I think he's more broken up about that and the affect Richard's tirade will have on dvd sales.

409. This whole argument about racism is futile. Racism is NEVER going to go away. My parents never raised us to be racist, and when I was in my 20's I used to argue with other white people who made racist remarks how horrible they were. Then, as I grew older, I realized that black people actually hate me just for being white and they could give a shit if I stick up for them. Ironically, it wasn't until I went to college and took a black studies course that I realized just how much black people hate white people. The professor, a black man, was a Farrukhan follower who just incited the entire class to hate and anger with his racist views against white people. I was forever changed by that class and decided that since black people basically rejected my attempts to quell racism amongst my own race that I would give up the cause and say f%ck it. Now, I don't care who says what about who. I realize that no matter what I say or do, I cannot convince black people that I do not hate them. I am basically being judged for something other people did that I had nothing to do with. Kind of ironic, ain't it, since blacks are always complaining that they are all being stereotyped because of what some bad black people do. See what I mean, you can't stop it. Screw it, seriously, I don't give a shit anymore. Hate only breeds more hate, it doesn't make the other side back down and say "ok, I give", it just makes them hate even more and then the hate grows and grows on both sides. I for one am turning a deaf ear to all the racist shit that goes on in this world and will try to live the rest of my life in my own little bubble because there is nothing that I can do to stop it. By the way, just for the record, my husband is a cop and whether anyone wants to admit it or not, black people are just as racist, if not more, than white people. You would not believe the shit he has to deal with on a daily basis. This assinine society tries to control the problem by shaming people for what they say in public and really, that tactic is not changing the way people really feel, it's just controlling what they say in public. Face it, we will NEVER stop the hate between races, religions, sexual orientations, etc, we'll just force it underground. I don't know, maybe that's enough, maybe it's not.

410. I am so surprised at this. At first I just figured that it was the usual out cry of the public. I am used to racust jokes from comedians. But to hear him shout over and over the "N" word, and then call the guy that yelled out to him a bad name....... I could not believe my ears and eyes. There were people of all races that were offended by this. And as a black woman I do not believe that he did not mean this comment. At what point did he think that the joke would actually go over? HE really shouldn't have, And for him to have wanted to have apologized he should have right then. He walked off the stage in an uproar because people were leaving. He didn't apologize or seem remorseful. He kept going until no one was listening. He tried to make a joke out of everything that the offended man said. That is wrong, If he doesn't feel this way about blacks then why is he in counseling? What is there to counsel? And then to run to the Rev. Jesse Jackson?!!!! That does NOT stop the outrage in the black community!!!! His "apology" is nothing more than a p r spin. I can no longer watch Seinfeld with a clear conscience. What is the problem. I feel like he should just quit while he's ahead. Before he lashes out at all the outher non-WASP races.

411. Reading the comments on this website just goes to show you how many issues this country with race. Blogs and comments boards are an easy way for anonymous, ignorant people to show their true feelings. But yet these same people will swear up and down that hey are not racist and like Kramer "one of my best friends is Black'. I for one could care less if Richards thinks I am a n*gger. I have never been a friend of his and I don't expect that to change now.

FYI: To all of the majority who feel an injustice about BET, Black colleges, magazines etc., You should do your research before taking offense. First, there is no such thing as an 'All Black ' college. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) were created by White people during the'seperate but equal' era. They did not want Blacks in there colleges and universities so they had to find some where to put them. There were never any laws saying that Whites could not enter these universities, but there was for the White universities. You can then, just as you can now apply and be accepted to HBCU's. You probably would not want to for fear of being a minority but that is your choice. I am sure you will find a White person on just about every HBCU campus who may have benefited from Affirmative Action, for the sake of diversity. Shocking isn't it :).

Now, moving on to BET. There are White television stations. CBS, NBC, ABC, etc. These stations cater to the taste of the majority (meaning you) population which is why we had to come up with our own. Lets face it, culturally we are very different, but that should be okay. Our humor, style, worship, taste in music are different. The aforementioned stations for the most part do not entertain me or many people like me. Why should I be forced to watch Sienfeld/Rosanne/Home Improvement/Will & Grace sitcoms if I don't find them funny. Also don't use BET as the bench mark station for Blacks because it has seriously fell on its face in the past few years refer to TV One instead. *The abouve argument can be applied to plack magazines (Ebony, Essence, etc.) also. If you show me some hairstyles, beauty tips, or body images that reflect me in Glamour/Comoplitan/Bazaar/Elle I will gladly cancel my subscription to Essence (don't bother looking because trust me, you won't find it).

I think if we all made an effort to learn about our differences, the US would be one step coser to this myth we preach about equality. Now, I am stepping down from my soap box so all of the ignorant, closet racists (both black and white) can have the floor.

412. I accept hte guys apology, he needs help - anger management.
However is that why there were no peole of color on sienfeld ???
The person (LYNN) who responded has not faced bigotry as ususal people like this never understand. They fail to understand "white privilege" because they have never been denied or mistreated because of their color or race. When you have Senators and Congressman using negative racial remarks (G.Allen - Macacca) what should the expectation be for people of color, as to how they will be treated when applying for a job or college. These actions dictate that we need affirmative action programs in this country. They also indicate we need to have an ope dialogue on such issues. We all need to understand the shades of color form black to white with all the shades in between.

413. It seems to be a lot more accepting of black comedians making fun of whites because of history. Besides, most of the jokes are FUNNY and TRUE Let's not even go down that road. The things that are said on BET are funny and Richards calling a BLACK man the n word isn't. Get it together people.

414. Some of you people who post comments are retarded. I am a beautiful, educated, young, black woman in America. It sickens me that I may have to raise my children in this defunct, racist country. Ok, yeah, he was wrong for what he said, but hell there's a war going on....Let's move on, really!

Posted at 12:56PM on Nov 28th 2006 by LeLe

415. The postings on this blog prove what I am saying is right. There are only a small minority of people (across all races) that are able to maintain their efforts to make this a utopian society. I am a stunningly gorgeous, blonde-haired-green-eyed 44 year old white woman in America (thought I'd throw that in there for no apparent reason). It sickens ME that I have had to raise two now grown children, and still raising a 4-year old adopted child in this broken down, divided country of ours, but hey, we're still the best thing out there. If you don't believe me, go spend some time overseas in a third-world eastern European country or somewhere like that. You'll be kissing the ground in America when you get back. This is where the "accept the things I cannot change" concept kicks in. It's much easier if you just accept how it is and find a work-around for yourself than to spend so much time being angry about how things are, that's not helping you. You don't have to contribute to the hate, you just need to figure out how to live amongst it.

416. Why is there an apology needed?? And why are two of the most racist men in American involed? ie Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson??
Afro American? There is no such thing.... you are either American.or.....not.

418. I happen to be a sista who's black and I think the situation is really out of control the man lost his temper and said some things that he shouldn't have but we all have black or white and black people use the word cracker publicly way more than white people use the word n*gga, not to excuse Richards behavior he said some really dumb things but he pretty much showed the world his ignorance so boo whoo to him. At the same time I think racism doesn't stop at Richards their's hidden racism in the world and will be until it ends but it's not only the with whites, blacks as well. racism is wrong no matter what color you are.

419. ha hes a fucking retard. His apology is a bunch of bullshit to, he's doing it so the next time he walk down the street a bunch of black people dont bet the shit out of him. Hey and maybe thats what he needs. I saw the tape that was no act of rage. Even if they where heckaling him, just tell them to shut up or go on with the show. You don't have to sat nigger about ten times and tell them you would have them up side down in a tree with a pitch fork in there asses. I'm white and i want to beat his ass, i can't imagin how those black people in the crowd felt. And i hope the people at the show got there money back.

420. This whole thing has gone mad. First of all, those guys should not have been heckling him in the first place. Sure, he should have spared the racial attack, but it came from his heart. Many people want blacks to act like adults in public, but it seems that many relish drawing attention to themselves and acting rowdy. Now these jokes want to file a lawsuit? He should file a lawsuit against them for heckling then, it's just as ridiculous as their suit.
