Audience Laughs at "Kramer," Seinfeld Pissed

In one of the most awkward moments in the history of late night television, a shamed Michael Richards appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman to apologize for his racist, hate-fueled rant. It wasn't meant to be funny, but the audience laughed anyway.

Richards agreed to appear on the show, even after Letterman took a comedic jab at "the guy who played Kramer" on the Top Ten list, at the request of his good friend and former co-star Jerry Seinfeld. Jerry was there to promote "Seinfeld" Season 7 on DVD.

As Richards began explaining the "nasty things" said about "Afro-Americans," the audience couldn't help but chuckle. Seinfeld, immediately scolded the crowd, saying "stop laughing, it ain't funny." But the crowd couldn't help themselves.

The confused fans continued to chuckle, and Richards seemingly blamed Letterman for the awkwardness. "I've already heard you make some jokes about it and that's OK, but I'm really busted up about it."

Richards admitted that he may have acted without thinking. "I'm hearing your audience laugh ... and I'm not even sure that this is where I should be addressing the situation."

422. Last I checked it was part of the Bill of Rights of all Americans that we have freedom of speech. I don't agree with the things he was saying but I do strongly agree that he should be able to say whatever the f*** he wants to say. It is our right as American citizens to agree or disagree with him. It seems obviouis that most would disagree and maybe even choose to skip his next performance.

He did nothing illegal, he made a bad choice to speak his opinion, an opinion that is obviously not a popular one, and one that he now recants. But he did nothing that should warrant a lawsuit.

424. In my personal opinion I think it is time to forgive and froget. We are all human and we make mistakes. He has apologized and that should be the end of it. As far as a lawsuit, I really think that's ridiculous. He's a comedian who went too far and the hecklers pushed him there, case closed. AS FOR COMMENT #421 FROM BRENT-YOU SHOULD GET OUT MORE OFTEN. I don't know where you go for entertainment, cultural events, etc. but MOST BLACKS do not act like that in public, MOST BLACKS do not want to draw attention to themselves. AS FOR COMMENT #423 - YVONNE , "YOU PEOPLE?" ARE YOU KIDDING ME? FIRST of all that "n" word is not acceptable to all blacks nor is it used by all Black people. To me it is offensive no matter who says, furthermore I consider any racial slur, against Whites, Asians, Latinos, etc. to be offensive and unacceptable. Secondly, I would suggest you explore the U.S. a little more, I'm sure you can find some Blacks who aren't sitting around calling each other the "n" word. AMERICA (ALL PEOPLE INCLUDED) IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN YOU TWO (#421 & #423) THINK!!

425. i swear to god i bet the people who say that black people say things about white people and nothing gets done, are white...,otherwise they wudnt say it....everyone is so f***ed up about race and calling eachother names.....if everyone would stop saying everything about everyone the world would be calm and wonderful......yeah right! kramer or whoever said what he said.....so what...i mean im black and i dont care honestly...he dosnt do anything that changes my life..who cares....

426. I'm so tired of this "n-word" crap. Black people don't mind it when other Black people call them the "n-word", but they make a big fit when white people call them that. It also seems pretty shady that we get plenty of coverage about what Richards said, but did we ever here what the Black person said to get him that angry? No one says stuff like that without a little triggering. I want to here what the Black guy said before Richards said what he said.

427. Yes, using the term 'Afro-American' makes it seem like he just crawled out of a cave or something. It was like adding insult to injury. I do agree that when a person loses it, they often try to hurt the people they perceive as the enemy, but these words and sentiments are so obviously representative of the man's real feelings. Sienfeld would have done better to encourage the man to seek help, but not to defend his actions. He spouted racist hatred. He obviously has issues that need to be dealt with. His apaology was not even an apology, becuase apologies are about taking responsibility and admitting guilt, not saying, "i'm sorry, but" As for you folks that want to level the playing field, you actually don't understasnd the power differential involved. People who are discriminated against, are slandered and harmed by racist sentiment, whereas somebody can call you a "cracker" all day long and it won't get to you. "Exactly" you say. Well, ever had anybody pick on something that hurt and quite possibly led to violence? It's different and the reason you probably won't see that, is you don't have to.

428. Wake up America--Kramer's rant and racist comments are not such an uncommon opinion. A large percentage of American's have racist attitudes but fear to voice them for fear of being labeled "racist". I live in the deep South (Atlanta) and was raised not to be racist or stereotype folks because of their color. But as I matured and see in the daily newspaper all the crimes, drug abuse, and general "I deserve it because of 300 years of oppression that my forefathers suffered" attitude in the black community, I find it difficult not to develop the same racist views slurred by Kramer.
I'm thankful for several true black friends who have risen above their fellow lowlife black "brothers" and have productive lives. When "Rev" Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and other white-man hating racist community leaders finally admit there is a problem in the black community & try to improve the problems from within, then the situation will begin to improve.
To all you "give it to me because I'm black" believers just remember: had the white man not brought your forefathers to America, you'd probably be sitting in a little village in South Africa weaving grass baskets, worrying about Apartheid!

430. Richards is an ass. Blacks that use the N-word are ignorant asses too. But as a black person, I would be much more offended to hear Richards use it repeatedly in the way that he did because it reminds me of the days when friends and relatives of my parents were threatened and considered 3/5 of a human and even hanged and burned at the stake in the deep south due to a deep-seated evil hatred of the nature that Richards seems to possess. Yes, Richards apologized, as no person from the old south would have done. But then again, no person from the old south would have had to worry ruining his career just because he killed a nigger.

If Richards had used that word in that way in front of me then he would have liked my actions even less than I would have liked his.

431. This whole incident is just typical of how the press blows things up, which is driven by people's pathetic "rubber-necking" mentality. As I see it there are several issues here:
1) The man "could" be a racist or he simply could be "in the zone" going too far to grab the audience, not thinking about what he's saying. Either way, this IS America and the beauty of America is that we have freedom of speech. If you don't like it, walk out on him. The bigger crime is allowing it to be in the forefront of public news for so long, thus giving racists a forum through which to further it's cause.
2) Blacks consistently denigrate Whites and other races, yet no one cares. Damon Wayans is disgustingly offensive in his diatribe about Black men marrying White women, and other comments. My God, it's horrible the way Black comedians talk about Whites. Why do we think that's ok, yet make such a big deal when a White comedian turns the tables? That's wrong.
3) I will NEVER use the term "AfroAmerican." It promotes separatism. My son is Black AND White and he was born in the United States. He AND his father prefer Black. THEY are NOT African... they are AMERICAN!!! Should I begin referring to myself as Irish/English/German/etc.American? Personally, I think we should all join The Church of Rodney King where the creedo is "can't we all just get along here?"
4) Racism is a fact in America and it isn't going away anytime soon because so many people on BOTH SIDES are so ignorant. Racism is based on ignorance. Also, I believe the main reason Blacks aren't accepted has more to do with their refusal to embrace traditional American values and mores than it does their color. Other races are more accepted and their ancestors were also slaves and their skin is also darker. I was taught in school that if you don't accept the social mores you will be an outcast. Blacks who do become accepted have chosen to blend in with the ways of American society. Oddly, they are chastised by their own race and called "Toms" or "sell outs." That is wrong! Learn to blend into society's accepted ways and I would be willing to bet a lot of the racism will disappear.
