Audience Laughs at "Kramer," Seinfeld Pissed

In one of the most awkward moments in the history of late night television, a shamed Michael Richards appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman to apologize for his racist, hate-fueled rant. It wasn't meant to be funny, but the audience laughed anyway.

Richards agreed to appear on the show, even after Letterman took a comedic jab at "the guy who played Kramer" on the Top Ten list, at the request of his good friend and former co-star Jerry Seinfeld. Jerry was there to promote "Seinfeld" Season 7 on DVD.

As Richards began explaining the "nasty things" said about "Afro-Americans," the audience couldn't help but chuckle. Seinfeld, immediately scolded the crowd, saying "stop laughing, it ain't funny." But the crowd couldn't help themselves.

The confused fans continued to chuckle, and Richards seemingly blamed Letterman for the awkwardness. "I've already heard you make some jokes about it and that's OK, but I'm really busted up about it."

Richards admitted that he may have acted without thinking. "I'm hearing your audience laugh ... and I'm not even sure that this is where I should be addressing the situation."

31. Shouting Nigga, Nigga Nigga is one thing, but the truth comes out in his reference to lynching and his yearning for the good ole' days. There will no doubt be apologists and the whole "pc is gone mad" crowd will be out there preaching that shit. When is the line crossed so terribly until you should be publicly humiliated for your stupid ass actions? You know, CONSEQUENCES. He made a mistake? Yep, a financial mistake. This will hurt Seinfeld's Christmas sales of season 7. The same people defending this guys actions flogged the Dixie Chicks for their comments regarding the stupid ass Bush War. Wrong is Wrong, no matter the victom. You are tired of hearing outrage by my community regarding this kind of language? 2006/7 and we still have reason to be outraged over this same ole shit.

32. And for those who seem to NOT understand why this IS a big deal (and probably agree with him...like I said not shocking) is that this guy lost control of his inner bigotry over someone saying he's NOT funny....AND HE'S NOT!!!! The idiot went to such a level that was truly uncalled for. It was a dumb move on his part. Clearly he's not intelligent enough to what?????...dare I say....use his "talent". If he really wanted to hurt the guys personally, there's always Yo Mama jokes. But we (African Americans) still seem to be the butt of a joke and it just not funny anymore. Mel Gibson's comments didn't generate laughter. *Yes with extreme sarcasm* GOODNESS NOOOOO!!!! That wouuld be an abomination!!!

And as for believing you can say whatever you feel...WRONG! I'd hoped we as "humans" have evolved to a level of restraint. Trust me, we (African Americans) in the back of our minds DO believe most share his sentiment but know you can't be stupid enough to let it slip. Frankly the guys exercise extreme restraint because a slip like that truly warrented a good ole fashion beat down for as we say "coming out of your mouth".

34. I watched the video and notice the crowd was laughing and he did it jokingly until the person got up and started to complain and say it was not right, will what about the colored cutting down the white people and saying bad stuff about white race and we don't get up and cry about it. I see more of the colored people cry and whine about anything close to joking about there color and they can call as say everything about everyone else and we can do and damn thing about it. I say if you can't laugh at yourself and just realize that we are all just humans in this world, not a race, if you look at you're race in the past we all be shocked to what we where like. I think he didn't do anything wrong, and the person in the audiance did more damage to himself, by not respecting the person and acting like a big cry baby and a bigget.

36. Richard's apology was heartfelt and genuine, if not troubled. I for one applaud his effort to get in front of the world as soon as he could to offer his apology. He was obviously very troubled by what he had let come out. As far as some of the audience laughing, I watched the taped show as it was broadcast. Knowing that the show is mostly comedy, and that Seinfeld and Richards are comedians, it was understandable that some in the audience were confused and "thought" that somehow this was going to turn into a comic bit. But of course, it didn't and was never meant to be. I totally understood Seinfeld’s comment to the audience to "stop laughing." And to be honest, the small chuckles were only from a handful of confused audience members and quickly they learned this was no laughing matter. As far as Richards Afro-American comment, I too find that perfectly understandable as it was the generation he grew up in and the title then used. My father who recently died at 91 still referred to Blacks as "Colored's." That’s just the "proper" title from his generation. Come on world … there are far more important issues to pick battles over than Richard’s blunder. But of course, it does remind us that while we’ve come a ways since Rosa Parks, we still have an awful long ways to go before we will (if ever) be able to just consider the rest of the world as our brothers and sisters.

37. I also accept his apology, the man was sincere. As for the audience, it appeared that at first it was a gag of sorts. So used to that kooky Kramer. Anyway, love ya Michael

38. Why does TMZ continue to insist on spinning its stories rather than let them speak for themselves? I saw nothing "awkward" about this moment .. it seemed quite sincere. Just like I didn't see the hecklers as being "playful". And finally, the TMZ poll results are very suspect .. they have listed the anti-Richards number as exactly "60" since hour 1 .. despite the fact that the posters are more intelligent and understanding of the situation (they see that Richards was reacting in anger in the moment after being baited, NOT presenting a planned anti-black diatribe.)

39. Yeah! I'd like to start a whites only academy awards too. and oh of course WET white entertainment television, where we don't say the word N*** to eachotehr, where we dont carry guns (DMX's show), where we don't put eachother down and swear every two seconds. But, yes, a white television station is racist. A white only anything is racist.

We're never going to get over racism, until everyone learns to let it go! there doesn't need to be black only anything, or white only anything. Until the black people can realize and see that they are the same as everyone else, racism will still exist.

get over yourselves.

40. Even more appalling than Richard's use of a racial ephitet is the fact that the first image he chose to invoke was one of the most extreme form of violence waged against African Americans in this country. Seems that there is very little comment on that aspect on this blog, but it is that part of his tirade--the very first words uttered that will stay with me forever. That is truly unforgivable. It goes to show how close to the surface of his psyche this horrific image lies. It took only a very small scratch of the veneer to unleash the monster. For those who comment that the victim of Richard's attack retorted by calling him "cracker," there is simply no comparison between this and Richard's opening remark about lynching.

41. Heat of the moment...anxious, we've all been there, heh is everyones mom gonna call up and complain when you're called a SOB or a Bitch. We sometimes act in inappropriate ways and then react in inappropriate ways. It happens. He appologized. What more can he do? Come on he's a great guy and has given me and many people a lot of laughs!!!! I'm sure he's helped more people's lives making them laugh. We need more like him, black, white, yellow....who cares. We need laughter We all make mistakes, we're just lucky are's aren't caught on camera....

43. EXACTLY!! Stop your damn whining, get off your fat, welfare ass, put the fried chicken down and go out and get a job to support the many kids you fathered and no longer support or see.... stereotypes can be ugly....even when they are true.

44. There's nothing wrong with ANY comedian making jokes about any races (blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians, etc...). I can take a joke and there are white comedians who come on shows like Def Jam and such that DO make jokes about blacks...but those are jokes and we can ALL laugh at those. However, what he did WAS not a joke. Why are ppl comparing this to that...there is a difference between a joke and a racist tirade.

45. It's not that comedians black and white don't get on stage and make comments about all ethnic groups..but during that time it's under the auspices of comedy. Has he ever been heckled before? Has he not handled it in another way? Well if he responds like this towards these hecklers with racist remarks there should be a call out to whomever feels a moral obligation to check him. If it was so okay why are there so many people leaving the show after he starts his tirade? Because it was inexcusable. The guys weren't black or white they were hecklers! He introduced color and race then the gents responded with thier racial taunts. Look at the issues they way they should be seen and not as Blacks can do this and that and the other and then it's okay because thier black....If that's the case look at all the blacks who are castigated in the public spotlight for wrongdoings is that not okay. Any whites been lynched in this country? ..........HustleMan
