Audience Laughs at "Kramer," Seinfeld Pissed

In one of the most awkward moments in the history of late night television, a shamed Michael Richards appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman to apologize for his racist, hate-fueled rant. It wasn't meant to be funny, but the audience laughed anyway.

Richards agreed to appear on the show, even after Letterman took a comedic jab at "the guy who played Kramer" on the Top Ten list, at the request of his good friend and former co-star Jerry Seinfeld. Jerry was there to promote "Seinfeld" Season 7 on DVD.

As Richards began explaining the "nasty things" said about "Afro-Americans," the audience couldn't help but chuckle. Seinfeld, immediately scolded the crowd, saying "stop laughing, it ain't funny." But the crowd couldn't help themselves.

The confused fans continued to chuckle, and Richards seemingly blamed Letterman for the awkwardness. "I've already heard you make some jokes about it and that's OK, but I'm really busted up about it."

Richards admitted that he may have acted without thinking. "I'm hearing your audience laugh ... and I'm not even sure that this is where I should be addressing the situation."

76. There is never an occasion that comments like this would be appropriate. Shame on Michael Richards for this outburst. He needs therapy, and to add a taste of punishment to his actions, we need to be sure he is never heard from again in any public forum.Much as I have enjoyed Mel Gibson, the same goes for him. You earn our respect with deeds...you lose it with actions like these.

Goodbye guys. It was nice knowing you both, but hey, you went way overboard. Now do us all a favor...leave the public stage of decency to those worthy of it's graces.

77. B,
You are so wrong. If I lose my temper and call you a name based on your asian heritage then I too am a racist. If I, in a fit of anger, pull out a gun and shoot someone, then I am a murderer. I have been angry (and drunk at the same time for that matter) at plenty of black people be they Americans or otherwise, and I have never busted out the N word. Using the N word doesn't make you a racist. It is the other way around. Racist people use the N word.

78. If the black hecklers would have had enough respect for the white comedian or for the fellow audience members, then none of this would have happened. Learn some manners for once!

79. I saw this last night, and I thought it was a complete half-assed apology. He was right about one thing: he should NOT have been on Letterman making his "apologies."

80. I agree I am so tired of how black people think they should have special treatment because their relatives from hundreds of years ago were slaves.
Where is my violin?

81. who cares if he calls someone a nigger! Black comedians call white people cracker and other racial slurs all the time. They do it all races but blacks can get away with it but when another race calls them a nigger they cry.

BS!!

82. Michael Richards only spoke the truth, I think the term racist is simply hillarious when used to relate what happened on stage, if the yuppies think racism is only a one way street, and that the media is not controlled by a a bunch of Jewish Moguls
who just love to point out any time a White Celebrity says any kind of "racist" statement regarding BLACKS or JEWS, put your Starbucks Coffee down, come to Detroit and we'll show you Diversity HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. OJ is free and he needs a new wife.

83. I think the majority of people, and nearly all whites, will accept his apology. I don't see this as ending his career in the least. But you he's damned if he does and damed if he doesn't. Blacks would be screaming for an apology had he not nmade one. Well he made a sincere apology, not good enough. What do you want- reparations from Kramer?

84. This is just another example of stereotypes being validated. He must have opened his show shouting the racial slurs, its not the black hecklers fault that was, well as already stated acting just like one. A disrespectful n*, now that it's okay for them to call each other, now its going to be okay for other races to call you that too, you can't be a hypocrite forever. We learned from our mistakes and are more than trying to make up for them by supporting most of the "race" on our shoulders. "our" being the american peeople, white black hispanic asian indian, you act like so and you will be treated as so, lots of black men in the crowd not heckling, he must of outlashed at the too... no, he told off the man that was messing with him and the guy got what he deserved. There are stereotypes for every race, and there are a lot of people in each race who fulfill these stereotypes everyday.. after all if they didnt, we wouldnt have stereotypes. So if you ask me do i hope every white man who ever says the N word again gets punished and beaten for it, yes i do, but i also hope that every black man that acts like N* does too. Hard to find anyone alive from those days of opression that can even comprehend whats going on in the world today. So please get over your peoples opression its over and none of you witnessed it, therefore have nothing to do with it. One last thing, should I happen to see behaviour like this in a comedy club or anywhere else for that matter, and a N* gets called on being one.. well ill stand up and applaud because atleast Kramer had the balls to stand up to him right back and spit his bullshi* right back at him.

85. As I read the post here I am intrigued to see the myriad responses. I see a few intelligible post where people definitely have their own opinion in the matter, but they express some level of concern over Richard's comments. On the other hand I see post that come off as purely unadulterated garbage from people, both black, white, and others, who just can't seem to get their minds around this issue of race.

Well you might as well face it now folks, because in the end, your little opinions about people of other races matter little. We are all in the mix now, and I mean that both figuratively and literally. Blacks need to stop complaining everytime someone non-black says the n-word. Who cares, if they don't say it in public, that doesn't mean they don't feel it. Even more annoying is the pitiful whites who are just so sad because oh, people of other races get to used words like cracker and honkey, but we can't say what we want to say back. Get over it already. Is it really that important at the end of the day? If it is, then you need to revaluate your life because apparently theres not much to it.

As for Kramers, er, Richards remarks, He said what he said, obviously it came from a place of anger. Whether hes a bigot or not, no one knows but him. What I do know is it was a huge spectacle that Im sure he wishes never happend. As for most of the people who are revelling in the little remarks Richards made, Im sure they're some of the same people who revelled in the comments that Mel Gibson made. Kind of Ironic huh, considering that Richards is Jewish.

86. You racist people that are posting on this board that it is okay for someone to be called a racial slur, (black people) are racist yourselves! It is not okay when a black comic calls a white person a cracker or any other racist comment... What you are failing to realize is that Richards wasn't making a joke using the N-Word, he got angry and used the word in a derrogatory manner, that is what's wrong with it. As I've said before all the racist assholes that put down other races are probably envious ...

89. yes btw cracker does have a historical meaning.. and its hilarious how blacks use it still today. definition? Cracker : the boss man with the whip that would keep everyone in line and hurt you if you didnt work.

Great use of the word today.. lol.. do you all understand how you mean the word, doesnt change the actual meaning..

so call me a cracker and if i had a whip i would crack it right then because you know what.. for being so ignorant you deserve it.

90. I agree, that audience laughed because he said "afro-american" which is an absurd, out-of-touch term. They laughed because it was so ironic -- here he is trying to be all apologetic and prove he's not racist, and then he uses a clueless expression.
