"I'm Not a Racist" -- Really?

There's a moment in Michael Richards' apology on Dave's show that you just gotta see. Richards, who went on an unbelievable racial tirade (and it was all caught on a tape exclusively obtained by TMZ), said "I'm not a racist. That's what's so insane about this."

Richards said his diatribe was the result of "free association," adding, "It fired out of me."

588. To "Bradley26":

Senator Robert C. Byrd was a member of the KKK when he was young, but he was never a "grand wizard or dragon or whatever it was," to use your words. He admits his mistake, and has apologized for it.

Whether you accept his apology or not, he certainly does not use the "N-word" to insult African-Americans. If he did, you can rest assured that it would raise just as big a controversy as Trent Lott's faux pas, and probably a bigger controversy.

590. i think that a lot of white americans feel the same way as Richards about blacks, they just don't dare to say it aloud, because of so called 'political correctness'. They would talk about it in the privacy of their kitchens, with trusted friends...

591. I am a black man. I am a huge seinfeld fan. Michael Richards is an ignorant a**hole for those remarks. Absolutely people are going to side or sympathize with him because he's Kramer. I was a huge Kramer fan. Richards is great at improv and he brought so much personality to his charecter. I was sad and dissapointed when his solo pilot never took off on NBC. I have no problem with acknowledging the mans talent, but he is a racist wether he wants to admit it or not. He is a closet case that holds his beliefs to himself closley guarded because he is aware of the taboo stigma that goes along with them. His case is no different from that of Mel Gibson' and I hold the two of them in the same regard...very talented a**holes. Richards was heckled...so what! What comedian hasn't been. The manner in which he dealt with it was both disguisting and unproffesional. Race relations do make for good comedy sure, but there is a difference between being a comic who does a bit on race relations and being a comic who has a problem with relating to other races. What michaels has done is 1) not funny in any way and 2) not a bit. He admittingly said that it stemmed from anger which has nothing to do with comedy. There is something deeply wrong when the first thought coming to mind in free association with a black man is a "nigger hanging upside down with a fork up his ass". For anyone to even think that is remotely funny or that it could be or to think it was just innocent, well then those people should take a self assesment and question their own morals. I grew up pretty diverse, I do not sit on the stoop drinking 40's. I have African American freinds, Italian freinds, Russian freinds, Middle Eastern and Carribean freinds and we joke and make racial comments to each other. I have freinds who make jokes about black guys and 40's that are funny and I've laughed along with them. The difference is we don't deliver these jokes with the malicious disdain and hate that was in Richards voice. This is not a case of a white comic just making fun of a black man and I don't find any hypocracy betwwen this instance and when black comics make fun of white men. I have heard white comedians make fun of black and other races and have found it funny. Likewise I've also heard black comics make fun of white men and found them to be not even remotely funny. So this is not me feeling the white man is after me or feeling one race of comic is better than the other. I love Seinfeld as much as Chris Rock and have seen every Seinfeld episode at least twice. I think Keenan Thompson on SNl is terribly unfunny. So let it be known I am not writing this out of allegiance to the black community or any other bullsh*t like that....Micael Richards was just plain wrong. I'm ashamed to have ever been a fan of his and it is just simply wrong. That's it.

592. I think it is a sad day when some one gets blasted for the words that they say. If that had been Jamie Foxx or Eddie Murphy no one would have said a word. Should I get highly offended anytime a comedian makes a comment about a cracker??? or makes white people jokes? and really....how many black people are actually from africa? I know two people that were born in africa and raised there...they are white. We as a society need to get over the "n" word and move on. It just causes so much crap. If one race uses it, it is a term of brotherhood...but if another uses it it is headline racism....GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

593. Every one in America is NOT a racist and it's easy for someone who has never experianced racism to say just get over it because your not offended by it. Anyone who that type of behavior is ok is just as sick as he is and should seek professional help. Number 13 you are an asshole!

594. i am a black male and i dont think mr. richards is a racist, black americans at times say awful demeaning things against african and carribean blacks and us likewise against them but that does not really classify us as racist, american blacks does not even like to leave the satefy net of america and travel, thank god for the white man because the word tourism would not even exist in the dictionary and i aint no uncle tom , i am just telling it like it is according to the famous song . american blacks have a very thin skin, ---look---- martin luther king gave his life for them and he woukd turn in his grave if he knew just how they are cracked out.

595. #13 He is a racist. White Power? So you are a damn racist too. He meant what he said. Why apologize then? Stop hiding behind robes and man up. I saw a white comedian recently make fun of black people. It was funny as all hell. It wasnt hateful. We must all learn to laugh at ourselves. Why can one black comedian stand in front of a white audience and feel no fear, do his routine. This guy has a couple of black guys heckling him and he loses his damn mind. He is a such a bitch. Looking like a sap on tv trying to be remorseful. Save it.
