Richards Reaches Out To Civil Rights Leaders

Jesse Jackson, Michael Richards, Al SharptonTMZ has learned that Michael Richards is reaching out to civil rights leaders, asking for forgiveness.

Uber-publicist Howard Rubenstein, who was hired just today by the "Seinfeld" star, tells TMZ that Richards was on the phone today with Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton, apologizing for his racial rant last Friday at L.A.'s Laugh Factory -- a rant captured on video and first shown on TMZ.

Rubenstein says Richards has made other phone calls today as well, expressing regret for his comments. Rubenstein says, "He's appalled at what he did and wants to start the healing process." Rubenstein adds, "Whether it be an attack on any racial group -- disguised or posed as humor -- he acknowledges it's horrible and wrong and he will never do that again."

Rubenstein says the calls were received "positively." Sharpton, however, stated publicly that he did not buy Richards' apology on "Letterman."

62. I am a woman. I have been called bitch, c**t, and whore. I've been told my tits look good, my legs would look great wrapped around some a**hole's neck, and that my mouth is only for one thing, and it ain't talkin'. I am going to school, majoring in medicine, and I work in a bar to pay for college. Do I think the idiots who've said those things to me need some education on respect? You bet I do, but will they get it? Hell no. For centuries women have been treated with the same respect that someone of color has, yet when I'm called a name in a bar NO ONE COMES TO MY RESCUE. Where are the civic leaders then, HUH???

There will be offended people for ever and ever. It can't be tolerated but it also can't be erased. It's just one of the sad facts of life.

63. Come on, the guy was no rookie. He's been in the biz for many a years and there is no excuse for his behavior unless he commits himself to a mental institution (or drug rehab).

I'm not African- American. What hurts me though is that at a paid public show, someone would become this enraged and then degrade and (beyond) disrespect them. The things he said were so hurtful and even vulgar. It is hard to imagine that this kind of anger towards a complete stranger just pops up one minute and can be washed away with an apology. There is something deeply wrong with him and he needs help before he hurts someone the next time.

64. I find it funny that so many have referred to Richards as a "has-been" The sheer number of comments posted (thousands), all the news coverage (Fox, CNN, Rush, Glenn Beck, MSNBC, etc). I kinda doubt a "has-been) would generate that kind of interest. This "has been" as you call him, has more money than you'll ever see in your life-time, more fame, people who love him, etc
I think some of you are a tad jealousnow aren't you. My words to you: You're a never-was

65. Sharpton just admitted that he thinks OJ was innocent on MSNBC. This guy is more of racist than anyone I know, a fake, phony, and a fraud. Remember the Tiwana Brawley case? She said " the white cops raped her" He was right there, taking her side, and it was all a bullshit lie. He never apologized to the white community. I feel sorry for anybody, white or black, who thinks this idiot is a positive, when it comes to fair and unbiased race relations.

66. Ian, your reply was right on the money!

Here's my two cents, an Earthling who happens to be black and female. First off, it should have been obvious to all--long ago--that Richards has serious mental issues, and maybe now those will be addressed. Secondly, this is indicative of the festering, fetid, malignant disease of racism that roils just beneath the surface of American life, but is treated like the elephant under the carpet that no one dares acknowledge. Even many of those posting here are seething with racial resentment and hatred, but jump defensive if called on it. The sad thing is that most Americans lack knowledge of the true, extensive history of African-American people. (Well, for that matter, they lack knowledge of American history in general.) If perhaps people were armed with knowledge rather than just unfocused angry emotion, we'd be able to truly confront and address some of the issues surrounding racism. Since this is not the case, hatred will continue to abound until we finally end up annihilating ourselves, if not the entire planet.

Happy Thanksgiving, people. And remember: One Planet, One People.

67. Isn't Richard's a jew if so he has enough problems. I know Seinfield is a jew and the DVD of his show came out this week. Better, believe Seinfield wants to get along with Blacks. Blacks buy DVD'S. To late to take foot out of mouth. Sales will be slow.

68. I am white...and gay. I've been called many things by many types of people, to include my own race as well as blacks, latins and asians.

So it's OK for me to just take it too right? But I as a white person or as a gay person can't say a thing to or about anyone else?

Face it...racism, bigotry, prejudice, sterotyping, whatever you wanna call it just is not going away in this great big happy wonderful free country homeland of ours. Now is it??

But wait...I'm not straight...nor black, nor hispanic nor asian...maybe i just should not have said a thing.

Darn it....i'm so sorry everyone. NOT!

71. You know, it just shows even further, a black man can call himself or a fellow black man a nigger, he can call white people crackers, whiteys, etc. But let a white man say nigger and all hell breaks loose. Those black dudes heckled and got slammed, had they just kept their mouths shut in the first place, none of this would have happened but let's just blame the white guy instead. BS!

72. Its ok for black people to say what they want, heaven help the white man who does. Give me a break, hecklers deserve what they get.

73. Okay, Ousslander:

I clicked on your link. You know yourself that gays do the exact same thing as you are accusing Blacks of doing. Punk, sissy, fag--these are all things that gay folk will call one another playfully, in jest. When Black folk use Nigga (something that I don't do), it is the same type of thing. It surprises me that you would post what you did. It only leads me to wonder if there's not that thin veneer hiding a closeted bigot.

That many would expect Black people to meet some standard or set some example is ludicrous. Notice we are not hearing a huge outcry that every white person is represented by Richards; he's one pathetic person gone astray. Yet, when it comes to Black people, there is the tendency to think of us as lumped together: If one Black person does something wrong, it means that all Black people are that way. Just because some Black people use Nigga among themselves has nothing to do with all Black people or with the racist blatherings of Richards. His comments were on an entirely different plane. It seems that many Caucasian people posting are using this incident as a free-for-all to spew their own racism into the world, adding to the stench begun by Richards and doing nothing to help foster positive change.

74. I just have one question for this website, and i think its a question many of us should be asking before we start passing judgment here. When are we gonna see the whole video? Right from the start of his bit, right till the end. We have seen the ugly Micheal Richards part on every single station, but we have yet to see the remarks, and the heckling done by the audience members. Im not saying what he said was right, cause nothing make that kinda of language right, anytime. Look at the man he's a wreck, and its hard for me to believe that a couple of people yelling at him and telling him he sucks is going to put him in that kind of state. Im Just saying if your not going to tell the whole story, dont tell any of it just to sell storys.
