Brangelina -- Josephine Baker Wannabes?

How many children will be adopted by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt? If they continue in the footsteps of famed humanitarian and sex icon Josephine Baker, they might take on an entire tribe.

The similarities between Brangelina and Baker are uncanny. Baker adopted a dozen multi-racial children and invented radical chic; Brangelina may end up adopting a dozen as well. They can afford it, Josephine couldn't ... but it didn't stop her. A princess came to her rescue.

Like Brangelina, Baker was fabulous, political, radical, chic, outrageous and controversial. This was a new kind of celebrity at that time; sexualized, outspoken, activist. The Pitt-Jolie union is all of those things as well. Here's a parallel portrait of the original diva activist, measured side by side with activists Jolie and Pitt.

With her wild abandon, Baker became a symbol for sexual liberation in the 20s and 30s. She got her first big break in 1921 when she was cast by legendary producer Fluornoy Miller in the chorus of "Shuffle Along," the first all-black show on Broadway. Her comedic dancing stole the show. She was asked to perform at various clubs, but could not abide segregated audiences at places like Harlem's Cotton Club, and she left the U.S. in 1925 for a more open-minded France. She became an overnight sensation by singing and dancing in nothing more than a feather skirt in the Danse Souvage, and with a pet cheetah at the Folies-Bergère in a skirt made famously of bananas. She starred in two films ("Zouzou" and "Princess Tam Tam") and made numerous recordings.

Josephine BakerHer prodigious affairs (which she later said numbered nearly a thousand) were rumored to have included Greta Garbo and Frida Kahlo. In the age before video, she was the most photographed woman in the world, and earned more money than any entertainer in Europe. Brad and Angelina are arguably the most photographed, sexualized, politicized celebrities in the world.

During the occupation of France in World War II, Baker helped the French Underground, and was later awarded both the prestigious Croix de Guerre and Légion d'Honneur by the French government.

Like Brangelina, Baker was married a few times. In 1947 she wed French orchestra leader Jo Bouillon, who helped her raise a dozen adopted children of different races, whom she called her "Rainbow Tribe." First was Akio from Korea, Teruya from Japan, Jari from Finland and Luis from Colombia, and eight others from around the world. She visited the U.S. in the 1950s to help fight racism, and was refused service at New York's famed Stork Club. She was the only woman to speak at Martin Luther King's March on Washington. She told the crowd they looked "Like salt and pepper. Just what it should be." Rosa Parks was the mother of the civil rights movement, but Josephine Baker was its muse.

Josephine believed that "children of different ethnicity and religions could be brothers." She bought Château de Milandes, a castle in which to raise her tribe. She called them "an experiment in brotherhood." After various health problems, she eventually went broke. Princess Grace of Monaco (Grace Kelly) came to her rescue, helping her stage a comeback and find a new place for her tribe. At age 68, Baker staged a wildly successful 50-year retrospective of her life, entitled "Josephine." It opened at Club Bobino in Paris, April 8, 1975, followed by a star-studded party which lasted two days. Audiences were stunned to learn that Josephine suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on the morning of April 10, while reading rave reviews of her stunning comeback. She never regained consciousness, and died two days later. She was given a televised state funeral in France, with a 21-gun salute. Over 20,000 people attended.

Angelina and Brad will likely continue their humanitarian efforts. Brad has helped the Katrina victims, Habitat for Humanity and others. Angelina serves as Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations. They have three children, Maddox from Cambodia, and Zahara from Ethiopia, and birth daughter, Shiloh, born in Namibia. It will be interesting to watch how all of them perform on the world stage over the next few years, promoting both charity and humanism. Their children will command attention for many years, with potential artistic and political careers in store for them, and perhaps for Brad and Angelina as well.

For all of their wealth, celebrity and attention, Brad and Angie appear to have their hearts with the people of the world.
Pitt embraced Bono's One campaign, which is devoted to reducing poverty, and he is deeply involved with the Global Green evironmental project. The couple established their own charitable foundation, and have donated to Doctors Without Borders and Global Action for Children. They donated the $4 million they got for the first pictures of baby Shiloh to various charities in Africa, saying; "While we celebrate the joy of the birth of our daughter, we recognize that two million babies born every year in the developing world die on the first day of their lives. These children can be saved, but only if governments around the world make it a priority."

Josephine Baker would have loved them.

31. I am amazed as to the jelousy and contempt of people because Angelina and Brad are doing such great humanitarian work. Stop it people. Admire and love them because of what they are doing. We should be so lucky as to afford their lifestyle and contribute to taking care of babies, children, the underprivileged and and just being great human beings. I am from what they would consider a third world country and unless you have lived in one, you will never understand poverty, lack of water, lack of medicine, etc. So to Brad and Angelina, I say, thank you for loving children of all races. People in this country are so blessed, so stop the whining and go out and volunteer. the universe will only bless you back.

34. Hmmmm, Josephine Baker? No. Joan Crawford? Yes. And I think in about 20 years Brad will be like a Woody Allen. Can anyone say Soon Yi or Zahara...

36. Sure, Brad and Angelina have nannies..Why not? No one can carry three children around all the time. So what? The ones they adopt will have lives with love, food, clothes, education, with or without, Angelina doing all the work. Why should she be the only one caring for the kids? That's crazy. They have the money to give away and to take care of their kids..Do I need to remind everyone that Brad and Angelina were ALREADY FAMOUS before they began adoping and giving away their money. They don't need publicity. Period. They still work at taking care of their kids or you wouldn't see all the photos, all the time...all over the world.
Many rich people leave their kids at home. About Jen, get over it!! Many other's leave their spouses and you all don't say a word. Example, Kate Hudson. I don't hear screams of pain for her husband and what a rat, Owen is...Why not"
We all sit on our behinds doing nothing!

37. Pitt and Jolie are "humanitarians" to the tabloid media. That's about it.

If Angelian were so concerned with human rights, how come she's never got around to explaining why she used a violcent African military dictatorship to keep the paparazzi at bay while she was preparing to have her kid? That, in and of itself, is a violation of human rights.

Just because you're photographed with starving African, Indian, or Vietnamese children doesn't mean a damned thing.

Angelina Jolie will always be 9 cents short of a dime to me: Wearing vials of blood, French-kissing her brother, and messing around with a married man (Pitt).

Brad Pitt will always be a no-talent psuedo-pretty boy to me.

38. these people are doing what they can to help all people!! we now live in a culture where that's even bad- especially if your are tabuliod fodder- to help anyone. heaven forbid that the spetactular would want to help the unclean of the world!! come one and back off!!! they are and we should all try to make this a better place. if people are going to have so much envy, disresect, and sometimes hatred for these "celebs- idols" that they can have everthing and still try to help the masses, you are contemtible. i only envy that i don't have their power to do as much if not more.

39. If you are on of the people who donate to kids charites and you send your money and you dont REALLY know who benifits from it you could look at it two ways; 1. I am doing this from the heart , and i belive it will help someone or 2. I will give all the time and make sure EVERYONE know what a hellva person I am. I belive J.B. and Brad and Angie are cut from the same cloth- giving, helping, and adopting , and from what I see they have the kids wherever they go, and one day Brad holds the boy the next time the girl, so it does not seem they are playing fav's , not even with their baby. And I also feel Mia Farrow is for real with her adoptions, too. There are SOOO many people we can hate on who deserve it ( MADONNA is all for show- the nanny will raise that new kid like she raised the others) and every one else who is now so interested in " helping kids ". And , last but not least, Brad , Sean Penn and others who went into the fire to help and still gave money ,for our own after Katrina. None of these people had to help but they did and I feel as a person who loves our land of the free and home of the brave that not all people do attention getting stunts to get noticed . Peace and Love to All :)

40. Some of you people are just idiots. You have not a clue who Josephine Baker was or what she stood for and you seem to know even less about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt and they are of your time. You call Brad and Angelina self serving. and self-absorbed only adopting for photo ops. Save that criticism for those out there seen constantly shopping while their children (biological and Adopted) sit at home. Save your criticism for those who think that its okay to leave their infants alone while they jet-set across the globe.

I do wonder though, what exactly do you call Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Ashely Simpson, Sienna Miller, Britney Spears and countless other so called superstars? They do nothing to help anyone or anything. Brad and Angelina never claimed to be anyone but themselves. Josephine never claimed to be anyone but herself. People criticized her back then just as people criticize Brad and Angelina now and usually those who do the criticising are doing nothing...NOTHING to help those in need. You can spew all the negativity you want, the fact is those who benefit from Brad and Angies efforts greatly appreciate it. What are you doing to help?

Someone stated that Angelina and Brad have questionable acting skills....might I remind you that Angelina has over 12 awards 3 of them Golden Globes, 2 of them Screen Actors Guild and 1 an Oscar. Far from questionable. Brad also has been nominated for an Oscar and has received a Golden Globe and an Emmy. So I guess your statement was made out of pure nastiness and not actually fact. If you are not fan, that's fine but don't malign their talent, their love for their children or their humanitarian efforts just because you don't like them or agree with their personal life, which is none of your business anyway. If you don't care for them...simply move on.

41. I going to ignore the "Envy, Jealousy, Hate and whatever else make no sense you keep talking about. Let's stick to the subject at hand: What "humanatarian" work are they doing? They adopted two kids, people do that all over the world everyday! As for taking pictures for all of you to gosh over is not humanatarian work, people. Yes, she did write to the UN to ask for a position. I bet they regret it now. All you ever hear about is their dramas. You want to admire them, go for it. But again, please don't tell me they are at the level of Josephine Baker. I find the comparaison offensive.

42. Jealous Women = Pathetic Women

Sorry but that's "the truth". Please girls, petty is way of life with you cats. MEOW!!

43. I'm so amazed at the multitude of Brangelina fans who'll jump on any topic to defend them. W/O knowing who Josie Baker is or even pretending to stay on topic, you get the, LEAVE THEM ALONE, YOU'RE JUST JEALOUS, crew out in force. 1st off, someone who has a differing opinion than yours isn't automatically jealous or a hater. that's a tad moronic and childish of you to think so. 2nd, try to at least educate yourself as to who Josephine Baker was THEN, state if you agree or disagree with this author's analysis. Damn. not that difficult folks. I know a bit a Josephine, her harsh upbringing, her work on behalf of the french resistance and her refusal to play to america's segretated audiences. Now from what I know about this woman, the ONLY thing Angelina/Brad have in common with her is their adoption of two children of color.

44. You tell them Rica. I can'r believe how stupid some of this people are. So now anybody can write to the UN and ask to be appointed an Ambassor just like Jolie did? Are you on glue? One of the major thing that you have to do as an anbassor is give publicity to the cause they assign you, and how can you do that sitting at home. Idiots. ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

45. People help everyday without screaming for glory, that's exactly my point. She got an Oscar for playing a psyco. Tell me something notable she has done since then? I would not be so quick to assume people don't know about JB's life. Again, she expressed herself through art and got out of the US because of racism. She never used tabloid media whenever it suited her fancy. Since you seem to think that people don't much of Baker's life, why not enlighten us. That would be far more interesting than "oh, such beautiful family".
