Is Beckham Worth the Big Bucks?

David Beckham just scored the biggest payday in sports history -- $250 million over five years -- but will he measure up?

David BeckhamTMZ did some number-crunching, and that's a lot of money by any measure, but especially so when you consider that's almost more than the other 200-plus players in the league will make next year -- combined. His yearly take -- about $50 million -- would be more than five major league baseball teams' entire salary load for 2006, and more than at least one NHL team. Even Michael Jordan, who played his last season in '98 for the Chicago Bulls at the then-astronomical salary of $30 million, doesn't come close.

Anschutz Entertainment Group, owners of the L.A. Galaxy, is shelling out most of Beckham's package. They report that since this morning's announcement, they've already sold 1,000 season tickets. We're also told that Major League Soccer thinks it'll sell out Galaxy tickets for the season -- in just 30 days.

Finally, sports-biz guru Dr. G. Lynn Lashbrook, president of Sports Management Worldwide, tells TMZ that the crazy cash the L.A. Galaxy will be shelling out is possible only because MLS has begun selling ads on the front of players' shirts, commonplace elsewhere in the world, but a first here in the U.S. Another sports marketing expert, Dean Bonham, tells us, "At the end of the contract, this will be seen as one of the most important investments in sports history." Beckham has not stated what Posh's wardrobe allowance will be.

16. Well the guys on here making all those childish, jealous comments should be jealous! He is handsome, rich with a loving family and has everything you'll never have...eat your hearts out! People who continuously knock everyone for such silly, petty reasons (nipple on wrong side lol?) are miserable in their own lives and attack every one else hoping it will make them feel more worthwhile...it won't..stupid is forever.

18. David "I'm such a prick" Beckham isn't even worth a six pence. He might be c**k of the walk in the UK and Spain but I doubt people here the states give a Fing rats ass who he is. He just another highly overpaid footballer.

20. Why compare him to Jordan? Jordan is small fry.

Beckham is coming for a little retirement kick about and look how much he's worth.

Football is the game the world plays. No one give a toss about your gridiron.

23. He is worth 200 million. He won't generate this in the USA alone.

Why is this concept so hard to grasp? People in Europe and Asia and pretty much everywhere abound the globe will be interested. Football dwarfs American sports globally.

Don’t fret, your own sports are still safe and the American way of life won’t be compromised in the slightest.

24. Contrary to the statement made sports-biz guru Dr. G. Lynn Lashbrook, president of Sports Management Worldwide, other professional soccer teams have sold advertising on jersey fronts as far back as 1990's. The Buffalo Blizzard for example, part of the indoor soccer league NPSL, had a sponsorship deal for jersey fronts in 1998; moreover, there are MILLIONS of players, Leagues/Teams, including, most Recreational, House, and Premier Soccer ("Football") teams, that also have front jersey sponsorship. Next time you make a "professional" statement, you have your facts straight...

25. # 12, I have to admit that was quite amusing :)
The reason he's so successful is not only is he watched in England and Spain, but practically every other country around the world [[minus the U.S]] is in tune to soccer. We don't give it coverage like they do in Europe and in some places in the Middle East and South America.

27. Number 19- thats true especially because of his fame and popularity in Asia. They even have a gold budda statue of him in a temple in Japan or India. They literally worship him over there.

The only reason Galaxy bought him was because of 'Brand Beckham' if they wanted a left midfield player they could have bought someone younger and cheeper. Well at least david beckham can go to sleep tonight knowing that there is one team in the world that actually wants him because none of the nig european teams wanted a nearly faded ex england captain with ridiculous wage demads.

29. Any attention away from Whorelina and her adoptive brats is good news for me.
Welcome to America Beckhams.
I don't give care how much he'll make, athletes are overpaid all over the world anyways.
I'd pay the bucks to see prime football players like Henry, Zidane though.
They're outstanding players.
Love football.

30. West Ham #15 & 19:
Why is it that whenever yous get a "famous" entertainment type person, they flee your stinkhole of a country? Is it because of the taxes? Is it because being "famous" in Australia is like being famous in the middle of fricking "nowheresville"? Is it the stink of all those sheep? The Nig*gers with blond hair?
NO ONE CARES ABOUT SOCCER IN THE DEVELOPED WORLD. AUSTRALIA, INDJA, JAPAN ALL THEM PLACES SUCK. WE DON'T GO TO YOUR CRAPPY COUNTRIES TRYING TO SELL YOU ON OUR WAY OF LIFE, YOUS BUY IT BECAUSE LIVING WITH SHEEP AND KOOLA BEARS SUCKS.
