Is Beckham Worth the Big Bucks?

David Beckham just scored the biggest payday in sports history -- $250 million over five years -- but will he measure up?

David BeckhamTMZ did some number-crunching, and that's a lot of money by any measure, but especially so when you consider that's almost more than the other 200-plus players in the league will make next year -- combined. His yearly take -- about $50 million -- would be more than five major league baseball teams' entire salary load for 2006, and more than at least one NHL team. Even Michael Jordan, who played his last season in '98 for the Chicago Bulls at the then-astronomical salary of $30 million, doesn't come close.

Anschutz Entertainment Group, owners of the L.A. Galaxy, is shelling out most of Beckham's package. They report that since this morning's announcement, they've already sold 1,000 season tickets. We're also told that Major League Soccer thinks it'll sell out Galaxy tickets for the season -- in just 30 days.

Finally, sports-biz guru Dr. G. Lynn Lashbrook, president of Sports Management Worldwide, tells TMZ that the crazy cash the L.A. Galaxy will be shelling out is possible only because MLS has begun selling ads on the front of players' shirts, commonplace elsewhere in the world, but a first here in the U.S. Another sports marketing expert, Dean Bonham, tells us, "At the end of the contract, this will be seen as one of the most important investments in sports history." Beckham has not stated what Posh's wardrobe allowance will be.

32. Look like Beckham made a killing on this deal. Good for him.
I just feel sorry for the LA Galaxy losers. I don't think they're ever going to recover that insane payout. Soccer isn't an American game. You will never fill the stadium!

34. I, for one, am thrilled to have him coming here. Maybe it will pique interest in soccer in the US. It's such a great sport and wonderfully fun to watch...SO much better than football where a bunch of big fat slobs fall down on each other for 4 hours. SNORE. Seriously, US football sucks. Time for real football!

Soccer will never "catch on" here in the backwards former colonies because it is a boring game, best played by young girls.
Don't like the NFL or College football? Here's a novel idea:
DO NOT WATCH IT!
INFACT YOU ARE HEREBY FORBIDDEN FROM EVER WATCHING IT AGAIN! We do not go to whatever sh*ithole country yous came from trying to force our values on yous,
YOU CAME HERE, DON'T LIKE OUR SPORTS OUR CULTURE?
STFU, you stupid twit!
No go out in the kitchen and make me and my boys some sandwiches and bring us some beers, be quick about be quiet!

37. What a joke!!! in my job I travel all over the world and have to deal with all those idiots who like soccer. The never ending battle of Euro football and American football. At least in american football, they get to hit people. I'm not an american football fan either, I'm a huge hockey fan, but I hope Beckam falls on his ass, no one should get that much money to play kick ball. That game will never catch on in america, it is way to boring.

38. What a bunch of morons at Anschutz Entertainment Group, owners of the L.A. Galaxy shelling out that kind of money to Beckham. Geese are they on crack or what...

I know the time line is different, but back in 1977 when Pele, Beckenbauer. Chinaglia. Carlos Alberto played for the New York Cosmos everyone thought Soccer would take off in America....it was a BIG flop!

Beckham could never be mentioned in the same breath of those players I don't care how much he's paid, or who his Bimbo wife is!

I lived in England for 21 years, and was raised with soccer in the school system...now living in America for the past 18 years I can tell you that soccer will never be mainstream and embraced by the American sports fan, it's just to boring. When you've been raised with American Football, and Basketball, European soccer is just to boring. I leave out Baseball because that is an American past time and will always be in the hearts of Americans.

I can say soccer in the States has some-what taken off among est the girls at school, and woman on a professional level.

The Galaxy are on a high that they've sold at 1,000 season tickets...mm, how many seats does the stadium hold? yeah, okay, 1,000 big deal!

Good luck to Beckham for landing a 200 million droller contract from a bunch of idolizing idiots. I wish him the best.

First the names these teams have been given is just comic like and not to be taken seriously...second when will management learn that one player does not build a team, sure it may sell some tickets, and I understand the business side of that, but give it 2-3 years and the Galaxy will be just another soccer team in America that has failed...did anyone watch Miracle on Ice...HELLO ANYONE HOME!!

The bottom line is, who cares if Beckham, or any other top European player comes to America, the completion they have to play against sucks. In England any pick up team off the streets would beat another of these American league teams.

On a note of importance though, that fake boobed, bimbo looking tart Spice may get the American fans going if she stripped before each of the Galaxy's games, and at half time and once more at the end....now there's a strategie to get the American fan to be interested for a full 90 minutes...

American management wake up you bunch of morons, it ain' gonad work!!

41. Not to nit-pick, but in actuallity his contract is worth about $50 million dollars over the course of the five years. He gets a share in the LA Galaxy, and rights to his marketing image, et cetera; which is where the additional money potentially comes into play. I really don't see how much of an impact he will make this first season; he begins playing in August, with less than two months (or about 10 MLS games) before the MLS Playoffs (what a crap concept; in European football there are no playoffs, you play the season to win the championship!). I will still be watching, but nothing can compete with the English Premier League.

45. Soccer boring are you kidding me!! Have you ever watched the world cup-- the intesity that these boys play with!!! American football where one play takes 15 minutes and a bloody flag on the field every 13 seconds will never compare to soccer the most spectated sport in the world!!

And Yes Beckham is worth it-- he may not be the best player in the world but he is the best marketing ploy!! Ever heard of a team called the NY Cosmos back in the 70's. They signed Pele (the wayne grektzy of soccer) -- creating the biggest sport trade in history and it worked -- LA Galaxy is just repeating history only with todays inflation the cost of players have gone up-- and it will work. Its about time America caught up with the rest of the world.
