Is Beckham Worth the Big Bucks?

David Beckham just scored the biggest payday in sports history -- $250 million over five years -- but will he measure up?

David BeckhamTMZ did some number-crunching, and that's a lot of money by any measure, but especially so when you consider that's almost more than the other 200-plus players in the league will make next year -- combined. His yearly take -- about $50 million -- would be more than five major league baseball teams' entire salary load for 2006, and more than at least one NHL team. Even Michael Jordan, who played his last season in '98 for the Chicago Bulls at the then-astronomical salary of $30 million, doesn't come close.

Anschutz Entertainment Group, owners of the L.A. Galaxy, is shelling out most of Beckham's package. They report that since this morning's announcement, they've already sold 1,000 season tickets. We're also told that Major League Soccer thinks it'll sell out Galaxy tickets for the season -- in just 30 days.

Finally, sports-biz guru Dr. G. Lynn Lashbrook, president of Sports Management Worldwide, tells TMZ that the crazy cash the L.A. Galaxy will be shelling out is possible only because MLS has begun selling ads on the front of players' shirts, commonplace elsewhere in the world, but a first here in the U.S. Another sports marketing expert, Dean Bonham, tells us, "At the end of the contract, this will be seen as one of the most important investments in sports history." Beckham has not stated what Posh's wardrobe allowance will be.

46. Soccer Fans shouldn't worry about what some ignorant americans think about Beckhams deal. The truth is no american sports player will ever make that kind of money in 10years time whether in the NFL or NBA. Soccer is a world recognised sports, the only reason Americans don't want to accept it because they suck at it and instead of trying to invest in a game which is so simple to play and so healthy a sport, they would let the rich kids play it in the surburbs and schools.Any Game which requires running around without taking a break is a no no for most Americans. They want to eat and drink beer while the watch sports, which is fine with me ,but soccer does'nt give you the time to grab more food or go for a refill, its intense a hot game.I have attended American Football games so boring you would want to sleep. They drink beer all munch on food during the 4 hours.Unlike soccer American football does not require been fit and healthy,So they would rather have a sports which allow 400 lbs athletes than a fast sports like soccer where you have to be an all round athlete. While this can't be said of all Americans ,there are some that have taken Soccer seriously because they see the health benefits .The world is changing and currently immigrants from Africa,Asia ,Europe, South America make about 30 percent of the Soccer crazed population.American kids now play more soccer than any other game and in a few years time as more get enlightened and with the broadcasting of the MLS,soccer is going to have a huge impact and take over all other American sports.Let them cry all they want but change will come like the civil rights movements of the 70's.The people I feel really sorry for are the American business who wouldnt make money from the sale of junk food and beer.Because at soccer games there is no eating or munching for hours.American Football will still be around like rugby has been in england and other parts of the world, but the main sports will be soccer.I think its time Americans go on diets for their new sports, because you cant kick when your stomach has taken all your leg room......PEACE

47. 250 million for an English soccer player in American market??? I don't follow the equation here? I have been in US for 6 years now. I was a big fan of soccer when I was in Nepal and I still am. After coming to US, I followed basketball and tried to watch the so called football (99% of the game they carry the ball in their hands but still calls it football.LOL). I would say that I am not a big fan of American football but I don't hate it either. Sometimes it is interesting and sometimes it is boring. I have asked many of my American friends about soccer and here is what majority of them said:
"Soccer is very boring. 90 minutes of players running around a big field just to score 1 or 2 goals is plainly wrong"
Even then all of them admitted that the only time they enjoy soccer is to see their kids play. So this what America thinks about soccer. What Americans do not realize about soccer is that this is not only a game of scoring. They fail miserably to see the strategy behind this world (world here means everything outside USA and including USA too) famous game. If only one point is to be given for every touch down in American football then what will be the score at the end of 4 hrs football game? Will it be 50? Will it be 20? Will it be 10? or will it be 5? So do you call American football a high scoring game? What about basketball? No doubt it is a very interesting game. I love it. But if you give only one point for every basket made then what will be the score at the end of 2 hrs game? Will it be 120? or 100? or 30?
Now imagine soccer. Lets have a similar point system .... what about 6 points for every goal made from inside the penalty area, 4 for goals made outside the penalty area, 3 points for every penalty kick and 2 for every corner kicks.... Now you tell me will soccer be high scoring game or a low scoring game? Soccer is not only about goals made. It is about the way they run at high speed and still control the ball, its about impossible long passes made, its about the athleticism of every player, their coordination in that huge field even when all players are so far from each other and after all soccer is about 90 minutes of pure entertainment, unlike American football which is plagued with commercials every minute for 4 hours.
The bottom line is every sport is interesting if you know the rules and the players' style. But 250 million $ is still a large amount ..LOL

48. No one should make that much money. It's sheer craziness. The world is never going to be balanced with some miniscule % of people making that obscene amount of money. There should be a maximum pay rate just as there is a minimum pay rate (at least there is "supposed to be " one in the US)

51.
This is beyond stupid. No one should earn that kind of money for kicking a ball into a net.Come on people, the only thing this kind of money deal will teach our children is envy and greed. I would like to know who has $250 million dollars to throw away on a soccer player. Give this money to our doctors and researchers or feed the hungry with it.!!!!!

52. Soccer will NEVER EVER overtake Football in America. In fact Lacrosse is over taking soccer among young players. It is boring as watching paint dry. It will always be the SUPER BOWL AND NEVER THE WORLD CUP in America. What a collosal waste of money. Soccer if for girls or momma's boys, who are not allowed to play football. Rugby is even more fun to watch then soccer.

54. To me, he's 'worthless' and so is his anorexic bimbo wife.

Last thing we need are two more additions to an already over-bloated lineup of media whores. Didn't we learn anything with Paris? Apparently not.

55. Paying anyone, sports figure, politician, business exec, that kind of money is ridiculous when thousands of children go without food and proper healthcare in this off balanced world. When will it end. Mrs. Posh spent 100K today on frills for her own kids...I'm impressed Posh.

57. I'm not made at him for gettin' his hustle on. MLS is about as popular as the defunct USFL. He'll make AEG a lot of money in the process, but I don't think he can be a savior for US soccer. This experiment will last 1 to 2 years tops.

58. Glad to see Becks sign in MLS. A bold move by him, though no one seemed to catch that he is "only" getting $9 or so a year guaranteed. All the rest are endorsements and bonus. It still seems like enough to get by on.
Anyone calling soccer boring must have never caught a game of baseball or a NASCAR race. I LOVE NFL, but there is only about 15 minutes of action in a 3 hour plus broadcast.
Beckham earned my respect when he played an exhibition in Chicago with Real Madrid two years ago. He was on the field all 90 minutes in 96 degree heat for an exhibition! That is toughness and fitness personified.
The previous day the team was given the keys to the city at City Hall. Following the press conference exited the elevators in the lobby and was mobbed about 40 fans. He took the time to take pictures and talk to all that came up to him. There were no TV cameras in the lobby to record this either. Really a class guy. Sorry not to add to the slander!
