Is Beckham Worth the Big Bucks?

David Beckham just scored the biggest payday in sports history -- $250 million over five years -- but will he measure up?

David BeckhamTMZ did some number-crunching, and that's a lot of money by any measure, but especially so when you consider that's almost more than the other 200-plus players in the league will make next year -- combined. His yearly take -- about $50 million -- would be more than five major league baseball teams' entire salary load for 2006, and more than at least one NHL team. Even Michael Jordan, who played his last season in '98 for the Chicago Bulls at the then-astronomical salary of $30 million, doesn't come close.

Anschutz Entertainment Group, owners of the L.A. Galaxy, is shelling out most of Beckham's package. They report that since this morning's announcement, they've already sold 1,000 season tickets. We're also told that Major League Soccer thinks it'll sell out Galaxy tickets for the season -- in just 30 days.

Finally, sports-biz guru Dr. G. Lynn Lashbrook, president of Sports Management Worldwide, tells TMZ that the crazy cash the L.A. Galaxy will be shelling out is possible only because MLS has begun selling ads on the front of players' shirts, commonplace elsewhere in the world, but a first here in the U.S. Another sports marketing expert, Dean Bonham, tells us, "At the end of the contract, this will be seen as one of the most important investments in sports history." Beckham has not stated what Posh's wardrobe allowance will be.

64. As a footballer he's not worth it; he's past it but as a fan draw, well that
remains to be seen. Can anyone explain, why he and his wife are known
as the King and Queen of the chavs. This is a British term.
Any Brits out there care to explain what this means.
I think it means they're tacky but I'm not sure.

69. David Beckham came to America for the money. He is not going to do anything for soccer. It did not happen when Pele, Beckenbauer and the countless superstars were here. Soccer would not go to the next level until we Americans, especially young kids, can identify with American super soccer stars. For soccer to reach a high standard in America, you don't need stars from outside, you need stars from inside. When it comes to women' s soccer, it's different. American women's soccer is doing fine....# 1 in the world. Why? The young girls are motivated because the American women super star players came from.....where? America.
Pele, Beckenbauer, Beckham, etc all came here at or close to their retirement. Why not!!! When Beckham sees only 3000 people in the stadium at home games and on the road...it might be upsetting to him. At least 215 million is more than 3000 in ths stadium. What a rip off!!!! What a country!!! God bless America.

70. Just the fact that all you guys know who Beckham is and that he is in the US to play soccer is the proof that he was worth the money. MLS soccer games draw between 5,000 to 20,000 per game which is compareable to NHL, NBA and many MLB teams. Posh is here to take over the states and will be on Desperate Housewives soon and Becks will be doing ads for every product known to man and scoring from free kicks against these sorry assed american soccer players! United!

71. It is obscene to the amount of moneyhe is being paid. In fact most of the players are highly over paid. As for his posh wife. Whats the big thing about her shes is a toothpick and not cute at all. All a bit of rubbish. Enough already.

72. The only problem is that the man can't really play well. He's currently more of a figurehead than a real soccer player. Look at his last few years. He's no Pele, and Pele couldn't even fill the stadiums here. It's a loss for the teams but likely a profit for the buyers in other ways, like the shirts, TV fees, souvineers, crap like that.

But...$250,000,000? The publicity that this sum created is worth part of the cost. It's a publicity stunt more than anything else. I'll lay odds they will never really pay him that total sum of money.
