Knight: Isaiah Forced Me Out with "Faggot" Slur

T.R. Knight says that Isaiah Washington forced him out of the closet when he called him a "faggot" on the set of "Grey's Anatomy."

What's more, Knight tells Ellen DeGeneres that he's dumbfounded by Washington's denial of having called Knight a "faggot" in a scuffle with "Grey's" co-star Patrick Dempsey. Washington offered the denial in an interview at Monday's Golden Globes. Knight, in turn, told Ellen, "I don't know what to say, really, about that."

Knight also says that he'd never been called by the slur "to his face," and when he heard Washington refer to him in that way, "something shifted, and it became bigger than myself." Shortly thereafter, Knight revealed to People magazine that he is, in fact, gay, but says he never intended to before the incident. "It became important to make the statement," he says.

Knight appears on today's episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." Check your local listings.

106. Does it really matter, it's his freedom as an American to say the words he wishes to say, you can think he's an a**hole for it, but to force him to apologize is no worse then forcing someone not to vote, because they are not willing to vote the same way you are. It takes away his freedom as an American citizen, yes i think he should be allowed to say it, i don't think he should be punished anymore, then just having his reputation tarnished.

107. Oops, I made a mistake. I realized it only happened twice that Isiah stirred this up. Sorry about that, for some reason I thought it was three times. Anyway, I also want to add that celebrities are in the lime light, so to some people they are role models, which means that they should watch what they say more then the average person. Some kid will hear that stuff and think, "wow, I really think Isiah was great, I guess since he used the word it must be ok." There is absolutely no excuse for ISiah other then he is a complete butt wipe. TR could have struck back when he was on Ellen. He could have said what a big idiot isiah was, but he didn't. He didn't say one bad word against Isiah, he only told Ellen what happened and he said that people shouldn't use the word that isiah used. How is TR at fault for this situation? (Sorry if it doesnt make sense, im about ready to fall asleep, lol)

108. Why are so many black people offended by the comparison of the civil rights struggle they faced years ago (and to some degree still do) and the civil rights struggle that gay people are facing? Its the same thing. Gay people want to be accepted as they are and have the same freedoms as eveyone other American citizen. Stop being so homophobic and get over it. Its not like anyone is calling the black population gay (God forbid). We are just comparing the struggle for civil rights. Stop being ignorant!!!!!!

109. I am a huge fan of the show. I was disappointed when all of this surfaced. I find it hard to believe as a black man Isaiah Washington would have made such a predjudice remark. First of all if the man has that kind of hatred for gay people he definately should not be in show business. This has obviously caused tension on the set which as a result will effect the show. I am not convinced that a simple apology is going to turn things around. I wouldn't be disappointed if he was fired from the show.

There have been negative remarks made about T.R. going on Ellen and sharing this experience and I think its ridiculous to place any blame on him. If every black person would have set back and took the verbal and physical abuse during the civil rights movement they would still be where they were, treated as second class citizens, riding in the back of the bus, using seperate bathrooms and drinking out of different water fountains. I think that T.R. has handled himself with class through this entire thing and have nothing but respect for the man. Isaiah on the other hand has shown that he is ignorant. What a stupid thing to say!!!!

111. I'm confused, Isaiah has to apologize for denying something he didn't say. Is it because he used the word in his denial that is causing everyone to be upset....Until this week, I didn't know that the spoken word was offensive.
I guess I'm like the majority "folks" that grew up using the "n" word. The sickening thing about this whole mess, is that people who are clearly out of order are taking things to extreme..

112. Thank you #14 for your comments, I couldn't have said it better myself.

113. I can see where some of yo u are coming from when you say that people have to deal with this stuff everyday....but it does not make it right for anybody to say that to another human being. Think about it, an african american walks down the street and gets called the "n" word, what will they do? Do they brush it off just because it happens everyday? No, words hurt, ecspecially when they are used as a personal attack on your character. That person would probably go home, maybe cry alone, tell a friend or a family member. TR Knight came out because he was trying to stop the conflict, trying to be the better person and move on. But then Isiah goes along and stirs it up again. The first time it happened, it peed me off but everyone deserves a second chance though i was not really sure he deserved it. But now a second and then a third time? When is enough? Cleary he is homophobic and cleary he needs some help. What was Tr supposed to do when he gets called that? Just sit back and be like...fine, whatever? How is that growing a spine? He should stick up for himself and the gay community, to help tell people calling anybody names like that is wrong. If your homophobic, racist, or whatever, keep it to yourself. Isiah was being childish by using the name out of anger and TR was just trying to stick up for himself. JMOP.

114. i think that this is blown out of porprtion, and people are making mountains out of molehills. It would take a bigger man to just walk over to washington, confront him and talk. I am not defending Washington though, because it's hard to hear a grown man say this.

peace

115. Tonight I watched Real Housewives of Orange County and was truly disgusted to see the F word used, the one that is used to disrespect gay people. How horrible! This jerk Shane Keough uses it while fighting with his brother. What truly bothered me was his mother says nothing. Should I expect her to? Yes!

She then writes a blog about how she is going to have a talk with them. Future "..going to". How about having a talk with them right then and there and telling them if you use that language in this house you are not welcome to stay here.

What is wrong with people? Parents. When did parents allow themselves to be called dirty whores (that is what her daughter calls her in episode 1) and to let their sons use that language on each other. She is so ridiculous.

116. I find it funny that Isaiah Washington actually had the courage to play a gay character (Get on the Bus) while the supposedly out and proud TR Knight plays "straight" characters. If Washington was the big homophobe, then why was he fearless in playing an unstereotypical gay man in a relationship with another man, while Knight was "forced" to tell everyone he is a homosexual. Another thing that is being continually left out of the extended coverage of this fruity story is that Washington, minutes after the press room incident, claimed once again that he would never disrespect another person's humanity by calling them an offensive term. The coverage of this is clearly biased towards portraying Washington as some kind of monster who terrorizes the set of Grey's Anatomy, which is most likely far from the truth.

117. I think that some of the comments that have been used and the people know who they are should be embarrassed because you obviously have had no home training and was never taught to respect people. As for the situation with Isaiah Washington and T.R. Knight, I think that Washington was wrong for what he said and there should be some type of action taken for what he did, however I do not think he should be fired. All over the world especially on TV shows like MTV they are allowing discrimination to occur to the cast members like Real World and Road Rules and nothing is ever done like sending them home or even an apology by the producers or cast members. Sometimes the people do apologize and the issue is never spoke of again, but Isaiah Washington apologizes numerous times even tries to get help and the people of Grey's Anatomy still cannot forgive him, what does he have to do give blood to get their acceptance. If I knew him I would tell him that you did all that you could do and if they cannot accept your apology then that is their problem and they have to answer to God for that. I think that girl whatever her name is that claim she would throw down for T.R Knight , she is one of the cast members, if she think she can beat up a man she has lost her mind. My personal opinion is that she is all talk and he is a man and should be able to defend himself. I also think that if the drama does not cease than that show will not last. I also think that white people have done alot to make blacks feel inferior and treat us like we are nothing and for a white man not to be able to handle one comment should feel ashame of himself because blacks have been dealing with it for years and still is Today, therefore he sould be able to handle it. Now he knows what it feels like.

118. PLEASE fire this biggot. This coming from a Black man....It has, for me, affected my watching Grey's Anatomy .. I still watch, but am infuriated and disappointed by the producers and it interfers with the show's story line whenever he is in a scene.

It is a sad commentary for all of us be we black, gay, or whatever that no action has been taken against him. I hope that a backlash occurs....

119. Kendra, you act like TR has said horrible things about African Americans, so he deserved it. It is a shame that people have and still do discriminate against African Americans, however, does that make it right for someone who hasn't said any bad things against someone (not sure if TR has or not but hypothetically), to be called something like the F word? As for 'the girl' who said she'd 'throw down' for TR, I'll bet you she could. Just because a woman is a woman doesn't mean she can't win a fight with a man. I have had, unfortunately, been in a situation where I needed to defend myself and I can say for sure that I held my own. You shouldn't generalize your comments because no two people in the world are exactly the same. Maybe you can't defend yourself, but in that case, maybe you ought to take some self-defense courses because clearly you are not confident in your ability to protect yourself and one day you might need those skills.
I don't think Isiah should be fired but maybe he needs his pay docked.
I am absolutely sickened by the people who actually think that it's ok for Isiah or anybody to call someone else that kind of name. Grow up people and start respecting people around you, we already have enough hate in this world.
